The purpose of this study was evaluated physiological activity of processed sulfur with Cordyceps militaris mycelium. Effect of blood glucose levels and lipid metabolism on streptozotocin-induced Diabetic Rats. To evaluate of hypoglycemic effects in vivo, we examined blood glucose levels, serum lipid profile and hepatotoxicity of streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats. Hypoglycemic effect of CM, CM+PSL and CM+PSH groups was significantly higher than DC groups. The activities of ALT, AST and ALP in CM+PSH group were lower than DC, PC groups. These results suggested that processed sulfur with Cordyceps militaris mycelium have activities of hypoglycemic effects.
The objective of this study was to make comparison of the physical work capacities(PWCs) for three different types of tasks. For this purpose, an ergometer exercise, a treadmill exercise, and lifting activities with four different frequencies (2, 5, 8, 11 lifts/min) for the lifting range from floor to 76cm were considered. Oxygen consumption rates and heart rates were measured during the exercises and lifting activities. The PWC values for ergometer exercise test was $2562.71ml-O_2/min$ and the one for treadmill exercise was $2874.89ml-O_2/min$. The value of lifting PWC increased from $1774.07ml-O_2/min$ to $2296.76ml-O_2/min$ as the lifting frequency increased from 2 to 11 lifts/min. The ratio of the lifting PWCs to the ergometer PWC increased from 69.36% to 89.77% as the lifting frequency increased. To the treadmill PWC, the ratio increased from 62.21% to 85.24% as the lifting frequency increased. From this result, it appears that the PWCs based on the lifting tasks rather than PWCs by ergometer or treadmill exercise should be considered to determine the physiological criterion for safe weights for lifting tasks. Therefore, the physiological criteria of the NIOSH Guideline should be reexamined.
The histological changes of gill, liver, spleen and muscle, and respiration and blood variables and liver glycogen content were examined in black seabream, Acanthopagrus schlegeli. Fish were exposed to a high level of total ammonia nitrogen (10.4 mg/l) and recovered from exposure $(0.4{\pm}0.2mg/l)$ in a closed recirculating seawater system. In the process of exposure, mortality was $9\%$, and hyperplasia, necrosis or inflammation appeared in all tissues except for muscle. Oxygen consumption was decreased by $49\%$, and red blood cell (RBC) number, hematocrit and hemoglobin concentration were significantly decreased, while plasma glucose contents, activities of glutamate-oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT) and glutamate-pyruvate transaminase (GPT) increased. Liver glycogen content significantly increased from $6.6\%\;to\;10.4\%$. A large amount of hemosiderin was observed in the splenic tissue. During the recovery period, RBC number, hematocrit, hemoglobin concentration, GOT and GPT activities were returned to the normal status. Histological status of liver tissue was returned to the normal, but liver glycogen content was not recovered. During the recovery period, spleen melanin-macrophages temporarily increased, but subsequently decreased to the normal status.
The physiological activities and amino acid compositions of dried lavers of Porphyra from the Jangheung, Seochen and Haenam coasts were determined. The ethanol extract of the Haenam dried laver exhibited the greatest 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity (56.1%), ferric-reducing antioxidant potential (FRAP) value(86.5 mM) and total polyphenol content (3.51 ppm) of these dried laver products. In addition, there was a strong positive correlation between the antioxidative activity and total polyphenol content of the laver products, suggesting that polyphenol compounds contribute to the antioxidant capacity in the ethanol extract of dried laver. However, there was no difference among the extracts in terms of cell proliferation activity. Fourteen combined amino acids were identified in oligopeptides from the dried laver products. Of the three extracts, that of the Haenam dried laver contained the highest levels of both free and total amino acids including alanine, glutamic acid, taurine, phosphoserine, and aspartic acid.
We investigated the physiological activities of extracts from Lindera obtusiloba Blume leaf and twig (LLW: water extract from Lindera obtusiloba Blume leaf, LLE: 50% ethanol extract from Lindera obtusiloba Blume leaf, LTW: water extract from Lindera obtusiloba Blume twig, LTE: 50% ethanol extract from Lindera obtusiloba Blume twig). Total polyphenol and total flavonoid contents of LTE were 445.38 mg/g and 302.09 mg/g, respectively. The electron donating ability (95.38%) of LTE was higher than that of the LLE (93.76%), LTW (88.09%), and LLW (82.06%). The oxygen radical absorbance capacity of extracts were improved with 50% ethanol condition, rather than hot water. Superoxide radical scavenging activity and FRAP activity of the extracts were improved with an increase of treatment concentration. All the extracts($1,000{\mu}g/mL$) stimulated a production of nitric oxide (NO) in macrophage RAW264.7 cells. In particular, the NO stimulating activity of LTE was superior to that of LLE, LTW, and LLW. The antitumor activity of LTE ($500{\mu}g/mL$) in A549, HeLa and SNU719 was 55.63%, 83.87% and 68.11%, respectively. The UVB-induced MMP-1 production in HS68 cells was suppressed by the treatment of LTE (88.28%), LLE (83.96%), LTW (80.59%) and LLW (76.08%).
Human health is affected by not only physical conditions but also mental and social well-being. Changes of human emotions show up as gestures, facial expressions and sweating. Human emotions are affected by such automatic nerve system functions as blood pressure, blood circulation speed, heart beats, pupillary reflex, fluid transfusion, muscular contraction and digestive organs, all of which influence the holistic diseases. The Oriental Medicine sees from a perspective of unity of divinity and men that human life activities are united in terms of their physical and mental functions. From such a perspective, human Five Organs are linked with Five Mental(五神) and Seven Emotions(七情), while they are affected by each other, influencing the life activities both directly and indirectly. Based on Confucianism, Sa-Sang Theory argues that human emotions can be categorized into four energy states and therefore, that human diseases and physiological conditions there of may be determined differently depending on the Four Energies(四氣). There seems to be some common points between Sa-Sang Theory and the conventional Oriental Medicine in that human emotions affect individuals' health conditions, so there seems to be much room for mutual complementation.

The reproduction of animals is a means to maintain their species. The golden hamsters are seasonal breeders, and their reproduction is regulated by the photoperiod. The shifts of the sexual functions imply the changes of the protein expression, and those are reflected by the proteome. Thus the present study was to examine via two dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2d PAGE), the physiological changes and the alterations of protein expressions in hypothalamus upon the reproductive situation related to the pineal gland. Among the pineal intact animals, the reproductive functions were sustained in animals housed in long photoperiod (LP) but regressed in animals housed in short photoperiod. And those pinealectomized animals showed high sexual activities regardless of photoperiod. Ultimately they were branched into dichotomy, sexually active and inactive animals. Apart from the changes of physiological parameters upon the reproductive conditions, there were obvious differences in proteins extracted from the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus of LP animals presented high levels of enzymes which are involved in the production of energy, glycolysis and Krebs cycle. The increased energy might be related to the GnRH synthesis in hypothalamus and indirectly to the constant cell divisions in spermatogenesis. Taken together, the impacts of the photoperiodic information controlling reproduction could be observed through 2d PAGE. Therefore, the present results suggest the potential of biomarkers collectively to diagnose the fertility and the infertility by way of proteomics in organs with regard to the reproductive system, further could be applied to diagnose various diseases.
In this study, we produced kimchi with cooked Dioscorea batatas yam based on the its outstanding nutritional value, biological activity, and pharmacological action. Sliced kimchi cabbage, processed white radish kimchi (kkakdugi), and whole kimchi cabbage were prepared with 3% Dioscorea batatas, and the physicochemical and bioactivity characteristics were analyzed. In three kinds of Dioscorea batatas. The pH of the kimchi decreased and its acidity increased as the storage period was extended. The period of the maximum total viable cell count of the sliced cabbage and the processed white radish kimchi (kkakdugi) was 14 days, while the period for whole kimchi cabbage was 21 days. The period of maximum lactic acid bacteria count was 14 days for all three kinds. For physiological activities, polyphenol and flavonoid contents and DPPH elimination were highest immediately after production of the kimchi. Also, anthocyanin content increased as the storage period extended. The pH, acidity, total viable cell count, lactic acid bacteria count, and physiological activities were shown to be different according to the type of kimchi and the storage period.
