This paper proposes a real-time simulation technique for thin rods undergoing large rotational deformation. Rods are thin objects such as ropes and hairs that can be abstracted as one-dimensional structures. Development of a real-time physical model that can produce visually convincing animation of thin rods has been a challenging problem in computer graphics. We adopt continuum mechanics to formulate the governing equation, and develop a modal warping technique for rods to integrate the governing equation in real-time; This is a novel extension of the previous modal warping techniques developed for solids and shells. Experimental results show that the proposed method runs in real-time even for large meshes and it can simulate large bending and/or twisting deformations.
As a hybrid model of continuum motion description which combines the advantages of classical kinematical descriptions i.e. Lagrangian and Eulerian description, the ALE (Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian) description is adopted for the simulation of a fluid-structure interaction of solid propellant rocket interior. The fluid-structure interaction phenomenon with the deformation of solid domain during the simulation. The developed solver is applied flow and propellant structure. The computed results show complex flow physics in the combustion chamber and the behavior of a solid propellant deformation.

This paper investigates the framework of vision-based dense displacement and strain measurement of miter gates with the approach for the quantitative evaluation of the expected performance. The proposed framework consists of the following steps: (i) Estimation of 3D displacement and strain from images before and after deformation (water-fill event), (ii) evaluation of the expected performance of the measurement, and (iii) selection of measurement setting with the highest expected accuracy. The framework first estimates the full-field optical flow between the images before and after water-fill event, and project the flow to the finite element (FE) model to estimate the 3D displacement and strain. Then, the expected displacement/strain estimation accuracy is evaluated at each node/element of the FE model. Finally, methods and measurement settings with the highest expected accuracy are selected to achieve the best results from the field measurement. A physics-based graphics model (PBGM) of miter gates of the Greenup Lock and Dam with the updated texturing step is used to simulate the vision-based measurements in a photo-realistic environment and evaluate the expected performance of different measurement plans (camera properties, camera placement, post-processing algorithms). The framework investigated in this paper can be used to analyze and optimize the performance of the measurement with different camera placement and post-processing steps prior to the field test.
Draw resonance is both an important and interesting instability encountered in various extensional-deformation-dominated polymer processing operations. It is important because of its paramount relevance to the productivity and quality issue in the related industry: and it is interesting because of as yet unanswered questions as to what its cause and origin are in terms of physics involved. Specifically, a short chronological account of the draw resonance research is presented in this paper bringing several previous results together and focusing on the derivation of a new criterion for draw resonance based on the interaction of the traveling times of some kinematic waves propagating along the spinline from the die exit to the take-up position. The new explanation of draw resonance put forward here based on the physics of the system is seen to have wide implications on both theoretical and practical aspects of draw resonance instability. The importance of the role played by spinline tension in determining draw resonance is an example of the former whereas interpretation of the mechanism of the draw resonance eliminator is an example of the latter. Finally, an approximate yet a very fast and convenient method for determining draw resonance is also derived based on the above findings and found to agree well with the exact stability results.
In this article, an analytical procedure is presented for static analysis of composite cylinders with the geometrically nonlinear behavior, and non-uniform thickness profiles under different loading conditions by considering moderately large deformation. The composite cylinder includes two inner and outer isotropic layers and one honeycomb core layer with adjustable Poisson's ratio. The Mirsky-Herman theory in conjunction with the von-Karman nonlinear theory is employed to extract the governing equations which are a system of nonlinear differential equations with variable coefficients. The governing equations are solved analytically using the matched asymptotic expansion (MAE) method of the perturbation technique and the effects of moderately large deformations are studied. The presented method obtains the results with fast convergence and high accuracy even in the regions near the boundaries. Highlights: • An analytical procedure based on the matched asymptotic expansion method is proposed for the static nonlinear analysis of composite cylindrical shells with a honeycomb core layer and non-uniform thickness. • The effect of moderately large deformation has been considered in the kinematic relations by assuming the nonlinear von Karman theory. • By conducting a parametric study, the effect of the honeycomb structure on the results is studied. • By adjusting the Poisson ratio, the effect of auxetic behavior on the nonlinear results is investigated.
The incorporation of carbon nanotubes in a polymer matrix makes it possible to obtain nanocomposite materials with exceptional properties. It's in this scientific background that this work was based. There are several theories that deal with the behavior of plates, in this research based on the Mindlin-Reissner theory that takes into account the transversal shear effect, for analysis of the critical buckling load of a reinforced polymer plate with parabolic distribution of carbon nanotubes. The equations of the model are derived and the critical loads of linear and parabolic distribution of carbon nanotubes are obtained. With different disposition of nanotubes of carbon in the polymer matrix, the effects of different parameters such as the volume fractions, the plate geometric ratios and the number of modes on the critical load buckling are analysed and discussed. The results show that the critical buckling load of parabolic distribution is larger than the linear distribution. This variation is attributed to the concentration of reinforcement (CNTs) at the top and bottom faces for the X-CNT type which make the plate more rigid against buckling.
The dynamic stability of a functionally graded polymer microbeam reinforced by graphene oxides subjected to a periodic axial force is investigated. The microbeam is assumed to rest on an elastic substrate and is subjected to various immovable boundary restraints. The weight fraction of graphene oxides nanofillers is graded across the beam thickness. The effective Young's modulus of the functionally graded graphene oxides reinforced composite (FG-GORC) was determined using modified Halpin-Tsai model, with the mixture rule used to evaluate the effective Poisson's ratio and the mass density. An improved third order shear deformation theory (TSDT) is used in conjunction with the Chebyshev polynomial-based Ritz method to derive the Mathieu-Hill equations for dynamic stability of the FG-GORC microbeam, in which the scale effect is taken into account based on modified couple stress theory. Then, the Mathieu-Hill equation was solved using Bolotin's method to predict the principle unstable regions of the FG-GORC microbeams. The numerical results show the effects of the small scale, the graphene oxides nanofillers as well as the elastic substrate on the dynamic stability behaviors of the FG-GORC microbeams.
The size-dependent nonlinear thermomechanical vibration analysis of pre- and post-buckled tapered two-directional functionally graded (2D-FG) microbeams is presented in this study. In the context of the modified couple stress theory, the formulations are derived based on the parabolic shear deformation beam theory and von Karman nonlinear strains. Different thermomechanical material properties are assumed to be temperature-dependent and smoothly vary in both length and thickness directions using the power law and the physical neutral axis concept is employed. The nonlinear governing equations are derived using the Hamilton principle and the resulting variable coefficient equations of motion are solved using the differential quadrature method (DQM) and iterative Newton's method for clamped-clamped and simply supported boundary conditions. Comparison studies are presented to validate the derived model and solution procedure. The impacts of induced thermal moments, temperature power index, two gradient indices, nonuniform cross-section, and microstructure length scale parameter on the frequency-temperature configurations are explored for both clamped and simply supported microbeams.
Several in-situ testing methods of adhesively bonded joints under static short-time tensile loading are critically analyzed in terms of experimental procedure and data evaluation. Due to its rather homogeneous stress state across the glue line, the tensile-shear test with thick single-lap specimens, according to ISO 11003-2, has become the most important test process for the determination of realistic materials parameters. This basic method, which was improved in both, the experimental part by stepped adherends and easily attachable extensometers and the evaluation procedure by numeric substrate deformation correction and test simulation based on the finite element method (FEM), is therefore demonstrated by application to several kinds of adhesives and metallic adherends. Multi-axial load decreases the strength of a joint. This effect, which is illustrated by an experimental comparison, impedes the derivation of realistic mechanical characteristics from measured force-displacement curves. It is shown by numeric modeling that tensile-shear tests with thin plate substrates according to ISO 4587, which are widely used for quick industrial quality assurance, reveal an inhomogeneous stress state, especially because of relatively large adherend deformation. Complete experimental determination of the elastic properties of bonded joints requires independent measurement of at least two characteristics. As the thick-adherend tensile-shear test directly yields the shear modulus, the tensile butt-joint test according to ISO 6922 represents the most obvious complement of the test programme. Thus, validity of analytical correction formulae proposed in literature for the derivation of realistic materials characteristics is verified by numeric simulation. Moreover, the influence of the substrate deformation is examined and a FEM correction method introduced.

The performance based design obligates quantitative assessment of required performances by means of transparent and objective science. In this design scheme, simulation of both macro and micro-scale structural behaviors is thought to be a powerful tool. This paper proposes a way how to unify the structural safety and serviceability check method and durability assessment of RC structures. Though component chemical-physical processes are crudely assumed, system dynamics of micro-scale pore structure formation and macro-scale defects and deformation of structures was shown as possible and promising approach in future. The authors understand that the unification of structural and durability design has just started. For further progress and development, predictive tool of structural behaviors from birth to death of concrete under any specified environment and load serves as an essential technicality.
