Current Methodologies for Membrane Permeability Assessment

  • Orally administrated drugs permeate the biological membrane by various transport mechanisms. The oral absorption potential is closely related to the physicochemical properties of the drug and interaction with the physiological factors surrounding the site of absorption. Assessment of the drug membrane permeability is an integral part of the early stage drug developmental process. Appropriate selection of the permeability screening method at the right stage of drug development process is important in achieving successful developmental outcomes. This review aims at introducing currently available in vitro and in vivo screening methods for the membrane permeability assessment.

나노섬유의 제조와 응용 및 한국의 차세대 섬유산업 (Fabrication and Application of Nano-Fibers for Korean Post-Textile Industry)

  • In this work, poly(ethylene oxide) nanofibers were fabricated by electrospinning to prepare nanofibers-reinforced composites. And the PEO powders-impregnated composites were also prepared to compare with physicochemical properties of nanofibers-reinforced composites. Morphology and fiber diameter of PEO nanofibers were determined by SEM observation. Mechanical interfacial properties of the composites were investigated in fracture toughness tests and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) test. As a result, the fiber diameter decreased in increasing applied voltage. However the optimum condition for the fiber formation was 15 ㎸, resulting from increasing of jet instability at high voltage and the prepared PEO nanofibers were useful in fiber reinforced composites. The PEO-based nanofibers-reinforced composites showed an improvement of fracture toughness factors ($K_{IC} and G_{ IC}$) and ILSS, compared to the composites impregnated with PEO powders. These results were noted that the nanofibers had higher specific surface area and larger aspect ratio than those of the powder, which played an important role in improving the mechanical interfacial properties of the composites.

단체급식소에서 이용되는 전처리 식품 중 생채소의 품질에 관한 연구 (A study for the quality of vegetable dishes without heat treatment in foodservice establishments)

  • The purposes of this study were to estimate the microbial and physicochemical quality of vegetable dishes without heat treatment such as sengchae, a traditional Korean vegetable dish, and to suggest a safer method of preparation. Platycodon sengchae and vegetable salad were monitored from the ingredient to final product before serving while storing at different temperature (4, 10$^{\circ}C$) and period (1, 2, 4, 7 days) at foodservice establishments. The results showed that the storage temperature pH, Aw, moisture content, and microbial loads are the important factors affecting the quality of vegetable dishes without heat treatment, and a thorough hygienic management from the purchase to the preparation of the dishes is needed to secure the quality of prepared foods in the foodservice establishments.

  • Three potato cultivars were prepared as slices and stored for 4 weeks at $5^{\circ}C$. Changes in Vitamin C content and other quality factors, such as color, pH, soluble solid and protein content were determined. Vitamin C content and L value decreased in three potato cultivars. Initial Vitamin C contents of three potato cultivars varied from 49.27 mg% in Sumi to 56.40 mg% in Namjak. Changes in L value showed that the tendency of browning in Daejima was slower than Sumi and Namjak. Changes in pH were small. Soluble solids and protein content increased and varied by cultivar. From the correlation analysis, correlation between browning degree and Vitamin C content was low in three potato cultivars.

농업용저수지 수질인자간 상관성 및 획귀분석 (Correlations and Regression Analysis Between Reservoir Water Quality Parameters)

  • In order to effectively manage the reservoir, reservoir water quality management should be based on physicochemical and configurational characteristics. In this research, correlation between factors affecting the reservoir water quality was examined. Chl-a and COD shows the highest positive correlation. Chl-a and T-P also has a high positive correlation, however Chl-a and T-N show lower correlation relatively. Even though T-N is an important factor for phytoplankton growth which increase Chl-a concentration, corelation of Ch1-a and T-N shows that enough nitrogen in the reservoir isn't no longer limiting factor. The age of reservoir can cause of increasing COD and SS. Embankment height and elevation of reservoirs shows strong negative correlation to water quality. That means reservoir which is higher embankment height and locate in higher elevations is less contaminated. Regression expression was derived with Chl-a and water quality parameters, and height of reservoir. Finally Chl-a was simulated using regression expression and it was a good approach to predict the Chl-a concentration.

Roles of Milk Fat Globule Membrane on Fat Digestion and Infant Nutrition

  • Milk fats are present as globules emulsified in the aqueous phase of milk and stabilized by a delicate membrane architecture called milk fat globule membrane (MFGM). The unique structure and composition of the MFGM play an important role in fat digestion and the metabolic programming of neonates. The objective of this review is to compare the structure, composition, and physicochemical characteristics of fat globules in human milk, bovine milk, and infant formula. It provides an overview of the fat digestion process and enzymes in healthy infants, and describes the possible roles of the MFGM in association with factors affecting fat digestion. Lastly, the health benefits of the MFGM on infant nutrition and future perspectives are discussed with a focus on brain development, metabolic response, and gut health.

Heavy-Metal Adsorption Characteristics of Scoria Distributed over the Earth Surface of Jeju Island

  • In this study, we investigated the various adsorption factors influencing the adsorption of heavy metal ions based on the study of the composition and physicochemical properties of scoria dispersed throughout Jeju Island. Analysis of the distribution characteristics of scoria samples collected from five areas of Jeju showed that reddish-brown-colored scoria were predominant. Analysis of scoria collected from Jeju Island showed that its mineral components are ordered as follows: SiO2 > Al2O3 > Fe2O3 > CaO and MgO. The experimental data did not show a linear relationship in the pseudo-first-order adsorption kinetics. In contrast, a pseudo-second-order model yielded a positive linear relationship, and this model was subsequently used. It could be concluded based on an intraparticle diffusion model indicating linear relationships that the capture of metal ions on scoria is dominated by the primary adsorption step.

${\beta}$-Glucanase를 이용한 국내산 찰보리 전분 추출공정의 최적화 및 추출 전분의 주요 이화학적 특성에 관한 연구 (Optimization of ${\beta}$-Glucanase-assisted Extraction of Starch from Domestic Waxy Barley and Its Physicochemical Properties)

  • In the present study, optimization on ${\beta}$-glucanase-assisted extraction was made in order to isolate waxy barley starch from domestic cultivar using the D-optimal design suitable for response surface methodology (RSM). The results demonstrated that the amount of enzyme was found to be a major influencing factor on the extraction yield, which was substantially increased by increasing the amount of enzyme. It was also influenced by the reaction time and amount of water addition; however, the two factors were less influential than the amount of enzyme. The optimized condition by RSM for the reaction time was found to be 2.63 hours and amount of enzyme 1.7%, and amount of water addition 4.38 times the weight of raw material. With the enzyme treatment, the starch content in residues (R), particularly in R1 and R5, was reduced considerably, resulting in an increase in the extraction yield and therefore primarily and effectively releasing B-type starch small granule confirmed by scanning electronic microscopy. In addition, the study determined the physicochemical properties of isolated waxy starch (i.e., purity, water adsorption capacity, thermal properties, rheology and starch morphology) and compared them with those from the enzyme-not treated sample. It was found that they were almost similar to each other, except for the purity of starch, which was lower in the enzyme-treated sample than in the enzyme-not treated one.

산양유 단백질 분해물/키토올리고당 나노 전달체 제조 및 물리화학적 특성연구 (Development and Characterization of a Hydrolyzed Goat Milk Protein/Chitosan Oligosaccharide Nano-Delivery System)

  • 본 연구에서는 산양유 단백질 분해물과 키토올리고당을 이용하여 약 138~225 nm 크기를 지니는 구형의 나노 전달체를 성공적으로 제조하였다. 제조된 나노 전달체는 소수성 건강기능성 물질인 DHA와 레스베라트롤을 각각 ~22 mg/100 mL와 ~4.5 mg/100 mL 씩 포집가능하며, 제조 공정요인(예, TPP 농도, 산양유 단백질 분해물 농도, 키토올리고당 농도) 조절을 통해 입자 크기, 표면전하등과 같은 나노 전달체의 물리화학적 특성과 소수성 건강기능성 물질의 포집 효율을 조절할 수 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 산양유 단백질 분해물/키토올리고당 나노 전달체는 동결건조를 통해 분말화가 가능하기 때문에 식품 적용성이 뛰어나다. 결론적으로 본 연구에서 food-grade 물질인 산양유 단백질 분해물과 키토올리고당을 이용하여 제조한 나노 전달체는 저지방 및 무지방 유식품에 적용 가능한 무지방 기반(non-fat based)의 소수성 건강기능성 물질 전달체로 이용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

잎새버섯 봉지재배에 적합한 배지조성 연구 (Investigation on Favorable Substrate Formulation for Bag Cultivation of Grifola frondosa)

  • 잎새버섯을 연중 안정적으로 생산할 수 있는 배지를 개발하기 위하여 주재료로 참나무톱밥, 미루나무톱밥 등 4종, 영양원으로 건비지, 미강 등 4종을 혼합하여, 혼합비율별 5처리로 시험을 수행하여 배지재료 및 배지조성별 이화학적 특성을 분석하고 균사배양 및 수량적 특성을 조사한 결과는 다음과 같다. 배지재료별 pH는 참나무톱밥과 참나무칩이 $3.4{\sim}3.5$, 건비지와 옥수수피가 $4.7{\sim}4.8$로 비교적 낮게 나타났고 조지방 함량은 미강이 17.1%로 가장 높았으며, 질소함량은 건비지기 3.2%로서 가장 높게 조사되었다. 배지조성별 pH는 T2, T3, T5 처리가 $4.3{\sim}4.6$으로 T1, T4에 비해 낮았으며, 조지방 함량은 미강의 함량이 많은 T4가 높았고, 질소함량은 T2가 건비지가 12% 함유되어 높게 나타났으며 따라서 C/N율은 T2에서 상대적으로 낮게 나타났다. 배지조성별 용적밀도는 T1이 $0.233g/cm^3$$T2{\sim}T5$$0.205{\sim}0.214\;g/cm^3$에 비해 높았으나, 공극률은 처리간의 유의적인 차이가 없었다. 균사 배양일수는 T2, T5가 26일로 T1(관행)에 비해 6일 정도 짧았으며, 균사배양 완성율도 각각 98 95%로 우수하였다. T2의 초발이 소요일수는 8일로 관행의 15일보다 7일 정도 짧아 전체 재배일수가 13일가량 단축되었으며, 수량은 338 g/1.5kg 봉지로 T1(관행) 대비 2.3배 증수되었다. 배지의 이화학성 특성중 수량에 영향을 미치는 요인을 찾기위해 상관분석을 실시한 결과 pH, 조지방함량, 질소함량 순으로 나타났다.
