A Solid-phase micro extraction(SPME) was evaluated as a tool for headspace sampling of tobacco samples. Several experimental parameters (sampling temperature, pH, and type of SPME fibers) were optimized to improve sampling efficiency in two aspects ; maximum adsorption and selective adsorption of volatile organic acids onto SPME fibers. Among four types of SPME fibers such as PDMS(Polydimethylsiloxane), PA(Polyacrylate), Car/PDMS (Carboxen/Polydimethylsiioxane) and PDMS/DVB(Polydimethylsiioxane/Divinylbenzene) which were investigated to determine the selectivity and adsorption efficiency. A variety of tobacco samples such as flue cured, burley and oriental were used in this study. The effect of these parameters was often dominated by the physical and chemical nature (volatility, polarity) of target compounds. This method allowed us to make important improvements in selectivity and sensitivity. The Car/PDMS fiber was shown to be the most efficient at extracting the 10 selected volatile organic acids. The parameters were optimized: $80^{\circ}C$ adsorption temperature, 30 min of adsorption time, $240^{\circ}C$ desorption temperature, 1 min of adsorption time.
Removal through adsorption is the most widely used and effective treatment method for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in exhaust gases. However, at high temperatures and humidity, adsorption is competitive due to the presence of moisture and unsmooth physical adsorption thereby deteriorating adsorption performance. Therefore, water adsorption honeycomb (WAH) and VOCs adsorption honeycomb (VAH) were prepared to improve VOCs adsorption at high temperatures and humidity. Adsorbed toluene amounts on single honeycomb (SH), containing only VAH, and combined honeycomb (CH), containing WAH and VAH, were determined. Further, the toluene adsorption rates of honeycomb adsorbents mounted on rotary systems, VAH-single rotor (SR) and WAH/VAH-dual rotor (DR) were determined. Toluene adsorption by WAH/VAH-CH (inlet temperature: 40-50℃; absolute humidity: 28-83 gH2O/kg-dry air) was 1.6 times that by VAH-SH, and the water adsorption efficiency of WAH/VAH-CH was 1.7 times that of VAH-SH. The adsorption/removal efficiency of the WAH/VAH-DR (inlet temperature: 45℃; absolute humidity: 37.5 gH2O/kg-dry air) was 3% higher than that of VAH-SR. This indicates that the WAH at the rotor inlet selectively removed water, thereby improving the adsorption efficiency of the VAH at the outlet.

The glycerol carbonate was synthesized by glycerol and urea using metal oxide catalysts. The physical properties of the prepared metal oxide catalysts were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), specific surface area analysis (BET), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD). In addition, we confirmed the conversion of the glycerol and the yield of the glycerol carbonate according to characteristics of metal oxide catalysts. From XRD and FE-SEM analysis, the crystallite size and crystallinity of metal oxide catalysts decrease with addition of Al. In addition, the Zn-Al mixed metal oxide had higher catalytic activity than the pure ZnO due to decreased side reaction in the synthesis of glycerol carbonate.

The research was conducted to characterize of Rh-Pd-Pt TWC with a double-layer washcoat for gasoline vehicle. The physical characteristics on surface of catalyst were inspected by BET, SEM and TEM. The characteristics of catalytic reaction were examined by the TPD/TPR and CO-pulse chemisorption. The catalyst $6Hx(0.35\times11\times3)$ showed superior conversion performance after hydrothermal aging process, which was due to small difference of the surface area between. the fresh and the aged catalyst. The CO-chemisorption and surface area were superior in the 600 cpsi catalyst than other catalysts, this catalyst also shown the higher conversion efficiency of the exhaust emissions. From the TPR test, the conversion performance of the aged catalyst was decreased by the agglomeration and sintering of the PM and metal oxides. From the TPD result, it was found that the NO chemisorption was happed on the bottom-layer washcoat with Pd, and the NO chemisorption was re-happened on the upper-layer washcoat with Pt and Rh in the desorption process.

Hydrogen-sensing behaviors of Pd- and Pt-SiC Schottky diodes, fabricated on the same SiC substrate, have been systematically compared and analyzed as a function of hydrogen concentration and temperature by I-V and$\DeltaI-t$ methods under steady-state and transient conditions. The effects of hydrogen adsorption on the device parameters such as the barrier height are investigated. The significant differences in their hydrogen sensing characteristics have been examined in terms of sensitivity limit, linearity of response, response rate, and response time. For the investigated temperature range, Pd-SiC Schottky diode shows better performance for H2 detection than Pt-SiC Schottky diode under the same testing conditions. The physical and chemical mechanisms responsible for hydrogen detection are discussed. Analysis of the steady-state reaction kinetics using I-V method confirmed that the atomistic hydrogen process is responsible for the barrier height change in the diodes.
This paper reports the effect of adding reduced graphene oxide (RGO) as a conductive material to the composition of an electrode for capacitive deionization (CDI), a process to remove salt from water using ionic adsorption and desorption driven by external applied voltage. RGO can be synthesized in an inexpensive way by the reduction and exfoliation of GO, and removing the oxygen-containing groups and recovering a conjugated structure. GO powder can be obtained from the modification of Hummers method and reduced into RGO using a thermal method. The physical and electrochemical characteristics of RGO material were evaluated and its desalination performance was tested with a CDI unit cell with a potentiostat and conductivity meter, by varying the applied voltage and feed rate of the salt solution. The performance of RGO was compared to graphite as a conductive material in a CDI electrode. The result showed RGO can increase the capacitance, reduce the equivalent series resistance, and improve the electrosorption capacity of CDI electrode.
The fluid ensemble in the liquid lens, which is composed of electrolyte and silicone oil, is the key material system to vary the focal length processing of the electrochemical desorption. In order to characterize the capability of the liquid lens according to response time and optical range, we prepared a fluid ensemble comprising the electrolyte and oil. To elucidate the physical mechanism of the effective response time, we examined the viscosity dependency while satisfying the requirements for the density and refractive index of the electrolyte and oil, respectively. The characterization results indicated that the response time (up and down) is influenced by the viscosity of the electrolyte and oil. On this basis, we prepared a fluid ensemble capable of reversibly adjusting for the focal length of the liquid lens, as well as the response time. The ensemble is applicable to various systems such as micro-lens and optical sensors.
In order to screen appropriate preservatives for the suspension containing sucralfate, neusilin and hydrotalcite, the patterns and mechanism of the adsorption and desorption of several preservatives on these antacids were studied. The employed preservatives were parabens(methyl, propyl, butyl), chlorhexidine diacetate and sorbic acid. While none of parabens were adsorbed on three antacids, chlorhexidine diacetate was strongly adsorbed on all the antacids employed, especially on hydrotalcite. Sorbic acid was not adsorbed on neusilin and hydrotalcite, however, 65% of sorbic acid was adsorbed on sucralfate. The adsorption of chlorhexidine diacetate on neusilin and hydrotalcite was partly physical and partly chemical, while its adsorption on sucralfate was almost chemical. Sorbic acid was completely deserted from sucralfate. In all cases, the adsorption isotherms were fitted well to both Freundlich equation and Langmuir equation. Based on these results, parabens and sorbic acid were the preservatives of choice for the suspension containing sucralfate, neusilin and hydrotalcite.
Characteristics of gas-liquid mass transfer and interfacial area were investigated in a bubble column of diameter and height of 0.102 m and 2.5 m, respectively. Effects of gas and liquid velocities on the volumetric gas-liquid mass transfer coefficient ($k_La$), interfacial area (a) and liquid side true mass transfer coefficient ($k_L$) were examined. The interfacial area and volumetric gas-liquid mass transfer coefficient were determined directly by adopting the simultaneous physical desorption of $O_2$ and chemical absorption of $CO_2$ in the column. The values of $k_La$ and a increased with increasing gas velocity but decreased with increasing liquid velocity in the bubble column which was operated in the churn turbulent flow regime. The value of $k_L$ increased with increasing gas velocity but did not change considerably with increasing liquid velocity. The liquid side mass transfer was found to be related closely to the liquid circulation as well as the effective contacting frequency between the bubbles and liquid phases.
The adsorption and reduction of Cr (VI) to Cr (III) by surface modified activated carbon (AC) in an aqueous solution was studied. The effects of surface modifications on the properties of the carbons were investigated by the analysis of specific surface area, carbon surface pH, acid/base surface values and functional groups. In order to understand the Cr(VI) adsorption and reduction ratio from Cr(VI) to Cr(III), the Cr adsorption capacity of AC was also measured and discussed by using inductively coupled plasma and UV spectrophotometer. The modifications bring about substantial variation in the chemical properties whereas the physical properties such as specific surface area, pore volume and pore size distribution nearly were not changed. Total Cr adsorption efficiency of as-received activated carbon (R-AC) and nitric acid treated activated carbon (N1-AC and N2-AC) were recorded on 98.2, 99.7 and 100%. Cr(III) reduction efficiency of R-AC increased largely from 0.4% to 28.3% compared to N1-AC and N2-AC.
