  • A study that copolymerized Ag nanoparticle and furfuryl isocyanate with the crosslinking agent EGDMA (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate), HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate), MMA (methyl methacrylate), MA (methacrylic acid) and the initiating agent AIBN (azobisisobutyronitrile) is presented. Measurement of the physical characteristics of the produced macromolecule showed that the water content is 32.08~32.67%, refractive index 1.446~1.448, visible light transparency 83.2~67.6%, contact angle $68.2{\sim}83.5^{\circ}$ and tensile strength 0.541~0.755 kgf. It is also demonstrated that the addition of Ag nanoparticles is associated with the reduction of UV-B transmittance and increase in tensile strength. The results show that the produced copolymer can be used as a material for ophthalmic lenses with durability and UV-blocking properties.

  • A null test method which relies on a computer generated hologram (CGH) is widely used to measure a large aspheric surface. For precise measurements of the surface shape of an aspheric optics, the CGH must precisely generate a wavefront that can fit on the ideal surface shape of the aspheric optics. If fabrication errors arise in the CGH, an unwanted wavefront will be generated and the measuring result will lack trustworthiness. Thus far, there has been limited research on wavefronts generated by CGH using only linear-type binary grating models. In this study, a theoretical error model of a circular-type zone plate, the most commonly used types for CGH patterns, is suggested. The proposed error model is checked by simulations and experiments.

  • This paper describes the study on the electrical design of a multi-beam large antenna for a satellite payload. This satellite antenna provides the universal communication and broadcasting services to personal portable terminals over the Korean Peninsula. The structure of the hybrid antenna fed by a feed array is proper to provide multi-beams. The amplitude and phase of each feed element should be optimized for a required beam and they can be obtained by GO (Geometrical Optics) and PO(Physical Optics) method. The number of feed elements are also optimized to meet the specification of EIRP(Effective Isotropically Radiated Power). The optimally designed antenna with the limited reflector size and minimum number of feed elements is shown in this paper.

  • Successive iteration of geometrical optics(GO)is suggested to calculate wedge diffraction fields. For a wedge and given source, the GO field may be obtained when the fields by the half spaces are found and the shadow regions are determined. Furthermore, one may caluculate the sources which are equivalent to the discontinuities of the GO field along the shadow boundaries and form a new wedge problem with the equivalent sources instead of the original one. It is shown that the field by the wedge and the equivalent sources equals to the diffraction field which GO requires for the complete solution. Also, it is shown that the field generated by the equivalent sources in the unbounded space, or the incident field in the new wedge problem, equls to the diffraction field approximated by the physical optics. The new wedge problem is solved here by another application of the GO to approximate the diffraction field and the result is compared with that by the physical optics. For a validity of the successive iteration of GO , infinite iteration of GO is performed analytically and the convergence is examined ofr conducting wedges, of which the exact solution is available.

  • For the analysis of Acoustic Target Strength(TS) that indicates the scattered acoustic intensity from the underwater vehicles, an analysis program that is applicable to scatterers insonified by spherical wave source in near field is developed. In this program, the Physical Optics(PO) method is embedded as a base component. To increase the accuracy of the program, multiple bounce effects based on Geometrical Optics(GO) method are applied. To implement multiple bounce effects, GO method is used together with PO method. In detail, GO method has a concern in the evaluation of the effective area, and PO method is involved in the calculation of Acoustic Target Strength for the final effective area that is evaluated by GO method. For the embodiment of near field spherical wave source originated multiple bounce effects, image source concept is implemented additively to the existing multiple bounce algorithm which assumes plane wave insonification. Various types of models are tested to evaluate the reliability of the developed program and finally, a submarine is analyzed as an arbitrary scatterer.

  • This paper presents the study on multi-beam large aperture antenna systems for a satellite payload. Multi-beam large antenna provides the universal communication and broadcasting services to personal portable terminals. The hybrid antenna composed of a large reflector and a feed array forms multi-beams. The feed cluster consists of a group of feed elements and each element should be optimized for the appropriate amplitude and phase. The optimization progress for amplitude and phase was performed by GO (Geometrical Optics) and PO (Physical Optics) method. The number of feed elements as well as the power level per element were also optimized to meet the required EIRP (Effective Isotropically Radiated Power). In conclusion, 30m-class reflector and twenty five elements for fifteen beams over Korean Peninsula were designed through the optimization process.

  • In this paper, radar cross section (RCS) analysis program, RACSAN has been developed to predict RCS of complex structures. RACSAN is based on the high frequency range analysis method of Kirchhoff approximation in physical optics (PO). This program can present RCS including multi-bounce effect in complex structures by combination of geometric optics (GO) and PO method. GO method has a concern in the evaluation of the effective area, and PO method is involved in the calculation of RCS for the final effective area that is evaluated by GO method. Comparisons of the predicted results and analytical solutions showed that the developed program could be an effective tool for predicting RCS in complex structures.

  • Diffraction patterns of electromagnetic fields for the incidence of E-polarized plane wave on both interfaces of an arbitrary-angle dielect wedge are obtained by sum of geometric optics term and the edge diffracted fields. The diffraction coefficients of the edge diffracted fields are evaluated by employing the physical optics approximation and then correcting its error with the multipole line source at the dielectric edge. For the wedge angle $120^{circ}$, the incident angle $60^{circ}$, the relative dielectric constant of the dielectric wedge, 2, 5, and 10, and the observation distance from the tip of the wedge, 5 and 10 wavelength, the diffraction coefficients and the diffraction patterns corresponding to geometric optics, physical optics, and the solution corrected by the multipole line source are plotted, respectively. While the corrected solutions presented in this paper are valid only in the far-field region, these asymptotic solutions show to satisfy the boundary condition on the dielectric interfaces.

  • Uniformity is a key feature of state-of-the-art infrared focal planed array (IRFPA) and infrared imaging system. Unlike traditional infrared telescope facility, a ground-based infrared radiant characteristics measurement system with an IRFPA not only provides a series of high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) infrared image but also ensures the validity of radiant measurement data. Normally, a long integration time tends to produce a high SNR infrared image for infrared radiant characteristics radiometry system. In view of the variability of and uncertainty in the measured target's energy, the operation of switching the integration time and attenuators usually guarantees the guality of the infrared radiation measurement data obtainted during the infrared radiant characteristics radiometry process. Non-uniformity correction (NUC) coefficients in a given integration time are often applied to a specified integration time. If the integration time is switched, the SNR for the infrared imaging will degenerate rapidly. Considering the effect of the SNR for the infrared image and the infrared radiant characteristics radiometry above, we propose a-wide-dynamic-range NUC algorithm. In addition, this essasy derives and establishes the mathematical modal of the algorithm in detail. Then, we conduct verification experiments by using a ground-based MWIR(Mid-wave Infared) radiant characteristics radiometry system with an Ø400 mm aperture. The experimental results obtained using the proposed algorithm and the traditional algorithm for different integration time are compared. The statistical data shows that the average non-uniformity for the proposed algorithm decreased from 0.77% to 0.21% at 2.5 ms and from 1.33% to 0.26% at 5.5 ms. The testing results demonstrate that the usage of suggested algorithm can improve infrared imaging quality and radiation measurement accuracy.

  • This paper proposes a method of moments(MoM)/Monte-Carlo simulation and Physical Optics(PO) model to determine Bistatic Coherent Reflectivity of sea surfaces at various wind speeds. For the MoM simulation, a Gaussian random rough sea surface was generated based on the data of Tae-An ocean at various wind speeds and sea surface heights. The numerical results of the MoM/Monte Carlo simulations were used to verify the validity region of the PO model. It was found that the numerical result for a flat surface agrees quite well with the Fresnel reflection coefficient. The validity of the PO model on the rough sea surface is shown by using ray tracing method.
