This study presents a physical habitat modeling of adult Zacco platypus in a reach of the Dalcheon Stream located downstream of the Goesaan Dam. CASiMiR model is used to estimate habitat suitability index based on the fuzzy logic. Results are compared with those from River2D model, which uses habitat preference curve for habitat suitability index. Hydraulic data simulated by River2D are used as input data for CASiMiR model after verification against field measurements. The result shows that the habitat suitability of the adult Zacco platypus is maximum around the riffle area located upstream of the bend. CASiMiR and River2D estimate the maximum weighted usable areas at the discharge rates of 7.23 $m^3/s$ and 9.0 $m^3/s$, respectively. Overall comparison of the two models employed in this study indicates that CASiMiR model overestimates the weighted usable area by 0.3~25.3% compared with River2D model in condition of drought flow (Q355), low flow (Q275), normal flow (Q185), and average-wet flow (Q95).
This paper presents a mechanical model of Rain-Wind Induced Vibration (RWIV) of stay cables. It is based on the physical interpretation of the phenomenon as given in Cosentino, et al. (2003, referred as Part I). The model takes into account all the main forces acting on cable, on the upper water rivulet (responsible of the excitation) and the cable-rivulet interaction. It is a simplified (cable cross-sectional and deterministic) representation of the actual (stochastic and three-dimensional) phenomenon. The cable is represented by its cross section and it is subjected to mechanical and aerodynamic (considering the rivulet influence) forces. The rivulet is supposed to oscillate along the cable circumference and it is subjected to inertial and gravity forces, pressure gradients and air-water-cable frictions. The model parameters are calibrated by fitting with experimental results. In order to validate the proposed model and its physical basis, different conditions (wind speed and direction, cable frequency, etc.) have been numerically investigated. The results, which are in very good agreement with the RWIV field observations, confirm the validity of the method and its engineering applicability (to evaluate the RWIV sensitivity of new stays or to retrofit the existing ones). Nevertheless, the practical use of the model probably requires a more accurate calibration of some parameters through new and specifically oriented wind tunnel tests.
The expertise required in the judicious use of nonlinear finite element (FE) packages for design-assistance purposes is not widely available to the average engineer, whose sole aim may be to obtain an estimate for a single design parameter, such as the limit load capacity of a structure. Such a parameter may be required for the design of a proposed reinforced concrete (RC) floor slab or bridge deck with a given set of geometrical and material details. This paper outlines a procedure for developing design-assistance equations for carrying out such predictions for partially restrained RC slabs under uniformly distributed loading condition, based on a database of FE results previously generated from a large number of 'numerical model' slabs. The developed equations have been used for predicting the peak loads of a number of experimental RC slabs having varying degrees of edge restraints; with results showing a reasonable degree of accuracy and low level of scatter. The simplicity of the equations makes them attractive and their successful use in the field of application reported in this paper suggest that the outlined procedure may also be extended to other classes of concrete structures.
In this talk we outline the current understanding of solar flares, mainly focusing on magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) processes. A flare causes plasma heating, mass ejection, and particle acceleration which generates high-energy particles. The key physical processes producing a flare are: the emergence of magnetic field from the solar interior to the solar atmosphere (flux emergence), formation of current-concentrated areas (current sheets) in the corona, and magnetic reconnection proceeding in a current sheet to cause shock heating, mass ejection, and particle acceleration. A flare starts with the dissipation of electric currents in the corona, followed by various dynamic processes that affect lower atmosphere such as the chromosphere and photosphere. In order to understand the physical mechanism for producing a flare, theoretical modeling has been develops, where numerical simulation is a strong tool in that it can reproduce the time-dependent, nonlinear evolution of a flare. In this talk we review various models of a flare proposed so far, explaining key features of individual models. We introduce the general properties of flares by referring observational results, then discuss the processes of energy build-up, release, and transport, all of which are responsible for a flare. We will come to a concluding viewpoint that flares are the manifestation of the recovering and ejecting processes of a global magnetic flux tube in the solar atmosphere, which has been disrupted via interaction with convective plasma while rising through the convection zone.

Method or work type improvement is needed in relation to reducing cost and increasing efficiency by ensuring construction quality and reducing labor in the form work process. This would have a great influence on the entire construction process, and make the process of adopting materials and methods more rational and economic. Hence, this study aimed to develop a Synthetic Resins Euroform that could improve durability, water-proofing, sophistication, and organizational unity through the use of injection modeling. Accordingly, this paper first investigated various performance requirements and necessary techniques, and then verified feasibility by evaluating the physical safety and technical validity when it is applied to construction field. In addition, this study evaluated the constructability, safety performance, environmental performance, and systemic excellence in terms of maintaining convenience of Synthetic Resins Euroform. Moreover, to verify feasibility in the construction field, this study analyzed and evaluated the maximum stress by measuring the load and deformation of the space of the horizontal furring, which is attached to Euroform as an armature.
Resistivity inversion result may be distorted if the seepage line fluctuation within central core with the change of reservoir water level as well as the conductivity of the reservoir water is not taken into consideration because the reservoir dike is composed of three-dimensional (3D) resistivity structure. Consequently, to accurately analyze the resistivity changes inside the reservoir dike according to the change of reservoir water level, 3D electrical resistivity modeling for the 2D survey line considering topography and physical properties of dam components was carried out. In addition, 2D inversion was performed with the simulated 2D resistivity data for a given 3D model in order to compare it with the inversion result of real field data. For 283 reservoirs in Korea, 2D inversion results for the simulated 2D data and field 2D resistivity data were compared. Finally, the reservoirs with an inversion ratio of 50% or less were selected as reservoirs that require further precise investigation.

The computational fluid dynamic analysis has been conducted for the thermo-chemical flow field in an arcjet thruster with mono-propellant Hydrazine (N2H4) as a working fluid. The Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations are modified to analyze compressible flows with the thermal radiation and electric field. the Maxwell equation, which is loosely coupled with the fluid dynamic equations through the Ohm heating and Lorentz forces, is adopted to analyze the electric field induced by the electric arc. The chemical reactions of Hydrazine were assumed to be infinitely fast due to the high temperature field inside the arcjet thruster. The chemical and the thermal radiation models for the nitrogen-hydrogen mixture and optical thick media respectively, were incorporated with the fluid dynamic equations. The results show that performance indices of the arcjet thruster with 1kW arc heating are improved by amount of 180% in thrust and 200% in specific impulse more than frozen flow. In addition thermo-physical process inside the arcjet thruster is understood from the flow field results.
The study was aimed to evaluate the applicability of a three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamic and water quality model, ELCOM-CAEDYM for Yongdam Reservoir, Korea. The model was applied for the simulations of hydrodynamics, thermal stratification processes, stream density flow propagation, and water quality parameters including dissolved oxygen, nutrients, organic materials, and algal biomass (chl-a) for the period of June to December, 2006. The field data observed at four monitoring stations (ST1~ST4) within the reservoir were used to validate the models performance. The model showed reasonable performance nevertheless low frequency boundary forcing data were provided, and well replicated the physical, chemical, and biological processes of the system. Simulated spatial and temporal variations of water temperature, nutrients, and chl-a concentrations were moderately consistent with the field observations. In particular, the model rationally reproduced the succession of different algal species; i.e., diatom dominant during spring and early summer, after then cyanobacteria dominant under warm and stratified conditions. ELCOM-CAEDYM is recommendable as a suitable coupled 3D hydrodynamic and water quality model that can be effectively used for the advanced water quality management of large stratified reservoirs in Korea.

The physical and mathematical foundations of the heat-shielding composite materials functioning under the conditions of aerodynamic heating of aircraft, as well as under the conditions of the point effect of high-energy radiation are considered. The problem of deformation of a thin shallow shell under the action of a local temperature field is approximately solved. Such problems arise, for example, in the case of local destruction of heat-protective coatings of aircraft shells. Then the aerodynamic heating acts directly on the load-bearing shell of the structure. Its destruction inevitably leads to the death of the entire aircraft. A methodology has been developed for the numerical solution of the entire complex problem on the basis of economical absolutely stable numerical methods. Multiple results of numerical simulation of the thermal state of the locally heated shallow shell under conditions of its thermal destruction at high temperatures have been obtained.
