  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of exercise using Thera Band on body compositions, blood pressure and physical fitness in the elderly women. Method: The study was designed as a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental study. Twenty four subjects were assigned for experimental group and twenty one subjects were assigned for control group. The experimental group participated in Thera Band exercise program consisting of 60 minutes per session, 3 times a week during the period of 12 weeks. The effects of the program were assessed using the instruments measuring the body compositions, blood pressure and physical fitness before and after applying the program. Data were collected between April and June in 2006, and analyzed by $x^2$-test, t-test, ANCOVA using a SPSS 11.5 program. Results: There were statistically significant in percent of body fat, muscle strength, muscle endurance, flexibility, and balance ability, but no significant differences were found in body weight, systolic pressure and diastolic pressure. Conclusion: Exercise using Thera Band can be an effective nursing intervention to improve percent of body fat, muscle strength, muscle endurance, flexibility and balance ability in the elderly women.

  • Attainment of the goals of functional electrical stimulation(FES) applications such as strengthening of muscle, increasing muscular endurance, improvement in joint range of motion or the reduction of spasticity does not insure that patients will be able to produce voluntary muscle contraction sufficient to maintain posture or produce purposeful movements. In many patients who have sustained CNS damage, the control exerted by higher nervous system center over muscle contraction may impaired. In Searched patients, a variety of advanced therapeutic exercise techniques have been employed traditionally to facilitate the return of controlled functional muscular activity or maintain postural alignment until recovery from dysfunction occurs Among the most common clinical applications of FES for functional muscle contraction is as a substitute for static or dynamic orthotic devices

  • The isokinetic exercise equipment generally allows a relatively safe application of maximal loading to a specific muscle group as well as an accurate and objective evaluation of muscle strength and endurance, it is more widely wing an the one of the important methods in rehabilitation and sports medicine. The aim of this paper was to compare the concept of the isometric and isotonic exercise and investigate the change of aerobic, anaerobic and fibers. In addition, the present study was designed to investigate the factors in measurement.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to compare combined exercise program group to conventional physiotherapy for patients with chronic neck pain. Methods : Participants were randomly allocated to two groups by experimental(n=17) and control(n=17). Combined exercise program group involved stretching, stability, strengthening and endurance, proprioceptive exercises along with an educational programme. Patient attended for 60min, three times a weeks. Control group was treated as conventional physiotherapy on 40 min, three times a weeks. Outcome variables included pain, disability, range of motion, fatigability at 0 and 6 weeks. Results : Pain, Disability Index, Fatigability significantly decreased(p<.05) and Range of motion improved significantly after active exercise program(p<.05). In conclusion. Combined exercise program improves pain and disability, range of motion, fatigability. Conclusion : These results suggest that combined exercise program is suitable for chronic neck pain.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether changes in electromyography (EMG) activations of spinal stability muscles with respiratory demand change were due to changes in respiratory demand or in postural demand. Methods: Forty healthy subjects (19male, 21female, $20.8{\pm}1.9$years old) performed quiet breathing and four different forced respiratory maneuvers (FRM) (Pulsed Lip Breathing, Diaphragmatic Breathing, Combination breathing, and respiratory muscle endurance training breathing) while in sitting and standing positions. EMG data for four muscles (TrA/IO, EO, RA, and ES) were collected and filtered using a band pass filter (20~200Hz) and a notch filter (60, 120, 180Hz). Results: There were no significant differences on percentage of change on %MVIC between QB and FRM (PLB, CB, DB, and RMET) between positions (all p>0.05).

  • The use of VPI impregnated mica tape as high voltage insulation for large rotating electric machines requires a careful balance of processes and materials to obtain the desired electrical, mechanical and thermal characteristics. The stator insulation systems such as epoxy bonded high voltage mica tape have been produced for many years. One such system employing an epoxy and anhydride impregnating resin developed by Hyundai Heavy Industries, Co. (hereafter, HHI), to satisfy customer requests for an epoxy bonded insulation system. HHI applies the following electrical and thermal evaluations such as dielectric breakdown, voltage endurance, dissipation factor vs. temperature, isothermal weight loss, and so on. A detailed laboratory evaluation can describe specific physical limitations for an insulation system and permit development of long-term operation guidelines that permit full utilization of the proposed system. HHI has found these evaluations very helpful in qualifying insulation system for the repair of both large motors and generators.

  • The properties of paper are very susceptible to moisture content originated from relative humidity. This propensity of PVA impregnated paper was investigated in this study. Especially the hardening effect of borax treatment after PVA impregnation on the response of paper sample to the relative humidity was evaluated. When the moisture content was increased with the relative humidity, tensile stretch and tear resistance were increased while tensile strength and stiffness were decreased. A great increase in folding endurance of PVA impregnated paper sample was found at the higher relative humidity. The borax treatment could reduce the response of PVA impregated paper to the relative humidity.

  • A performance test of inter propellant seal for a 75 ton class turbopump is conducted using water to evaluate leakage and endurance performance. Each part of fuel pump side and oxidizer pump side for a prototype inter propellant seal has been tested for verifying endurance performance during total accumulated test time 2,100 sec in water. The fuel pump side part with one-stage seal of carbon floating ring shows average leakage rate 13.7 gram/sec under average seal differential pressure 9.4 bar. On the other hand, the oxidizer pump side part with two-stage seal assembly of carbon floating rings shows average leakage rate 7.3 gram/sec under average seal differential pressure 9.5 bar. After the endurance performance test, the inter propellant seal shows good physical condition. A leakage performance test of the inter propellant seal for cryogenic environment will be performed using LN2 in the near future.

  • The objective of this study was to analyze the concurrent treatment effects of ursolic acid (UA) and low-intensity treadmill exercise and to confirm the effectiveness of UA as an exercise mimetic to safely improve muscle atrophy-related diseases using Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats with skeletal muscle atrophy. Significant muscle atrophy was induced in male SD rats through hind limb immobilization using casting for 10 days. The muscle atrophy-induced SD rats were group into four: SED, sedentary; UA, daily intraperitoneal UA injection, 5 mg/kg; EX, low-intensity (10-12 m/min, $0^{\circ}$ grade) treadmill exercise; and UEX, daily intraperitoneal UA injection, 5 mg/kg, and low-intensity (10-12 m/min, $0^{\circ}$ grade) treadmill exercise. After 8 weeks of treatment, endurance capacity was analyzed using a treadmill, and tissues were extracted for analysis of visceral fat mass, body weight, muscle mass, expression of muscle atrophy- and hypertrophy-related genes, and endurance capacity. Although the effects of body weight gain control, muscle mass increase, and endurance capacity improvement were inadequate in the UA group, significant results were confirmed in the UEX group. The UEX group had significantly reduced body weight and visceral fat, significantly improved mass of tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius muscles, and significantly decreased atrophy-related gene expression of MuRF1 and atrogin-1, but did not have significant change in hypertrophy-related gene expression of Akt and mTOR. The endurance capacity was significantly improved in the EX and UEX groups. These data suggest that concurrent treatment with low-intensity exercise and UA is effective for atrophy-related physical dysfunctions.
