  • The study is focused on the extraction of design consideration for non territorial workplace though the analysis of the workers satisfaction. Though the application of investigating method, at the first stage survey, satisfaction of non-territorial workplace user and the non territorial workplace design considerations are figured out. In addition the appraisal items are arranged and all of the factors were identified to influence the entire satisfaction in statistically meaningful levels. The first order of the design consideration for non-territorial workplace was evaluated as 'Psychological Element', 'Service Element', 'Mutual Interchange Action', 'Individual Working Element', 'Work Efficiency', 'Physical Element', respectively. Therefore the considerations are extracted based on the workers satisfaction and it need to be most focused on Psychological Element' among other things for non territorial workplace.

  • It is important to model the mechanical structure precisely and reasonably in predicting the dynamic characteristics, controlling the vibration, and designing the structure dynamics. In the finite element modeling, the errors can be contained from the physical parameters, the approximation of the boundary conditions, and the element modeling. From the dynamic test, more precise dynamic characteristics can be obtained. Model updating using parameter modification is appropriate when the design parameter is used to analyze the input parameter like finite element method. Finite element analysis for cantilever and simply supported beams with uniform area and shape change are carried out as model updating examples. Mass and stiffness matrices are updated by comparing test and analytical modal frequencies. The result shows that the updated frequencies become closer to the test frequencies.

  • Recently the function of a department store has changed to the concept of a multi-functional center because of the alternative stores such as discount stores, home shopping, and internet shopping. This means that the front plaza of a department store is not a personal or private space any more, but a public space. This study focuses on the special character of public space through the classification and preference types of department store front plazas. The major results of this study can be summarized as follows: (1) Components of front plaza of department store are classified by three factors. The first factor, named "space limit", has 14 elements ; the second, named "space decoration" has 16 elements ; third, named "activity", has 2 elements. The first preferred element is easily- used and easily- serviced wide space. The second preferred element is the equipment that is placed linearly along the street. The third preferred element is cultural events. (2) The comparison between the frequency and preference shows that the plazas could not satisfy the user-needs. (3) Preference factors of front plazas were examined to three characters such as familiarity, peculiarity, and openness. Familiarity, peculiarity, openness have a positive correlation in all types. Peculiarity especially influences the other two space - preference factors.

  • This paper presents an advanced engineering technique using finite element analysis to improve structural silicone glazing (SSG) design in high-performance curtain wall systems for building facade. High wind pressures often result in bulky SSG aluminum extrusion profile dimensions. Architectural desire for aesthetically slender curtain wall sight-lines and reduction in aluminum usage led to optimization of structural silicone bite geometry for improved stress distribution through use of finite element analysis of the hyperelastic silicone models. This advanced design technique compared to traditional SSG design highlights differences in stress distribution contours in the silicone sealant. Simplified structural engineering per the traditional SSG design method lacks accurate forecasting of material and stress optimization, as shown in the advanced analysis and design. Full scale physical specimens were tested to verify design capacity in addition to correlate physical test results with the theoretical simulation to provide confidence of the model. This design technique will introduce significant engineering advancement to the curtain wall industry and building facade.

  • The mechanical damage of concrete is normally attributed to the formation of microcracks and their propagation and coalescence into macroscopic cracks. This physical degradation is caused from progressive and hierarchical damage of the microstructure due to debonding and slip along bimaterial interfaces at the mesoscale. Their growth and coalescence leads to initiation of hairline discrete cracks at the mesoscale. Eventually, single or multiple major discrete cracks develop at the macroscale. In this paper, from this conceptual model of mechanical damage in concrete, the computational efforts were made in order to characterize physical cracks and how to quantify the damage of concrete materials within the laws of thermodynamics with the aid of interface element in traditional finite element methodology. One dimensional effective traction/jump constitutive interface law is introduced in order to accommodate the normal opening and tangential slips on the interfaces between different materials(adhesion) or similar materials(cohesion) in two and three dimensional problems. Mode I failure and mixed mode failure of various geometries and boundary conditions are discussed in the sense of crack propagation and their spent of fracture energy under monotonic displacement control.

  • The creep and consolidation behaviors of clays subjected to thermal cycles are of fundamental importance in the application of energy geostructures. This study aims to numerically investigate the physical mechanisms for the temperature-triggered volume change of saturated clays. A recently developed thermodynamic framework is used to derive the thermo-mechanical constitutive model for clays. Based on the model, a fully coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) finite element (FE) code is developed. Comparison with experimental observations shows that the proposed FE code can well reproduce the irreversible thermal contraction of normally consolidated and lightly overconsolidated clays, as well as the thermal expansion of heavily overconsolidated clays under drained heating. Simulations reveal that excess pore pressure may accumulate in clay samples under triaxial drained conditions due to low permeability and high heating rate, resulting in thermally induced primary consolidation. Results show that four major mechanisms contribute to the thermal volume change of clays: (i) the principle of thermal expansion, (ii) the decrease of effective stress due to the accumulation of excess pore pressure, (iii) the thermal creep, and (iv) the thermally induced primary consolidation. The former two mechanisms mainly contribute to the thermal expansion of heavily overconsolidated clays, whereas the latter two contribute to the noticeable thermal contraction of normally consolidated and lightly overconsolidated clays. Consideration of the four physical mechanisms is important for the settlement prediction of energy geostructures, especially in soft soils.

  • The multiparameter eigenvalue method can be used to solve the damped finite element model updating problems. This method transforms the original problems into multiparameter eigenvalue problems. Comparing with the numerical methods based on various optimization methods, a big advantage of this method is that it can provide all possible choices of physical parameters. However, when solving the transformed singular multiparameter eigenvalue problem, the proposed method based on the generalised inverse of a singular matrix has some computational challenges and may fail. In this paper, more details on the transformation from the dynamic model updating problem to the multiparameter eigenvalue problem are presented and the structure of the transformed problem is also exposed. Based on this structure, the rigorous mathematical deduction gives the upper bound of the number of possible choices of the physical parameters, which confirms the singularity of the transformed multiparameter eigenvalue problem. More importantly, we present a row and column compression method to overcome the defect of the proposed numerical method based on the generalised inverse of a singular matrix. Also, two numerical experiments are presented to validate the feasibility and effectiveness of our method.
