  • Photovoltaic (PV) generators have nonlinear V-I characteristics and maximum power points which vary with illumination level and temperature. Using a maximum power point tracker (MPPT) with an intermediate converter can increase the system efficiency by matching the PV systems to the load. This paper presents a maximum power point tracker based on fuzzy logic and a control scheme for a single-phase inverter connected to the utility grid. The fuzzy logic controller (FLC) provides an adaptive nature for system performance. Also the FLC provides excellent features such as fast response, good performance and the ability to change the fuzzy parameters to improve the control system. A single-phase AC-DC inverter is used to connect the PV system to the grid utility and local loads. While a control scheme is implemented to inject the PV output power to the utility grid at unity power factor and reduced harmonic level. The simulation results have shown the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

  • The purpose of this study for photovoltaic (PV) generation system is to keep the output power of photovoltaic cells maximized under any weather conditions. In a conventional MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) control method, both voltage and current coming out from PV array have to be fedback. Thus, the system has a complex structure, and may fail to track MPP of PV array when unexpected weather conditions happen. This paper proposes a novel PV Output Senseless (POS) control method to solve the mentioned problem. The main advantage of this method is that the current flowing into load is the only one considerable factor. In case of a huge PV generation system, it can be operated much more safely than the conventional system. To verify this theory, results that compare and analyze the simulated data with experimental data under real weather condition of the manufactured PV generation system are shown in this paper. Authors vividly states that this theory uses constant resistors and variable resistors of DC-DC converter in PV system. Authors emphasize that it is a very useful method to maximize power from PV cells to load with only the feedback of load current. Authors also emphasize that this theory is applicable in case of the PCS in PV power generation system.

  • This paper presents a current sensorless maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control method for dual-mode photovoltaic (PV) module-type interleaved flyback inverters (ILFIs). This system, called the MIC (Module Integrated Converter), has been recently studied in small PV power generation systems. Because the MIC is an inverter connected to one or two PV arrays, the power system is not affected by problems with other inverters. However, since the each PV array requires an inverter, there is a disadvantage that the initial installation cost is increased. To overcome this disadvantage, this paper uses a flyback inverter topology. A flyback inverter topology has an advantage in terms of cost because it uses fewer parts than the other transformer inverter topologies. The MPPT control method is essential in PV power generation systems. For the MPPT control method, expensive dc voltage and current sensors are used in the MIC system. In this paper, a MPPT control method without current sensor where the input current is calculated by a simple equation is proposed. This paper also deals with dual-mode control. Simulations and experiments are carried out to verify the performance and effectiveness of the proposed current sensorless MPPT control method on a 110 [W] prototype.

  • Present-day solar panels incorporate inverters as their core components. Switching devices driven by specialized power controllers are operated in a transformerless inverter topology. However, some challenges associated with this configuration include the absence of isolation, causing leakage currents to flow through various components toward ground. This inevitably causes power losses, often being also the primary reason for the power inverters' analog equipment failure. In this paper, various aspects of the leakage currents are studied using different circuit analysis methods. The primary objective is to convert the leakage current energy into a usable DC voltage source. The research is focused on harvesting the leakage currents for producing circa 1.1 V, derived from recently developed rectifier circuits, and driving a $200{\Omega}$ load with a power in the milliwatt range. Even though the output voltage level is low, the harvested power could be used for charging small batteries or capacitors, even driving light loads.

  • In this paper, 15[kW] AC regenerative system for battery charging and discharging test is proposed. The regenerative system is able to regenerate surplus energy to the grid in discharging mode, and the inverter of the system can be operated as a converter to compensate scarce energy in charging mode. In case of the conventional DC charging and discharging system, the regenerative energy is consumed by a resistor. However, as the proposed system regenerates the surplus energy to the grid through using DC-AC inverter, the energy saving effect can be achieved. In this paper, 15[kW] battery charging and discharging system is developed, and the validity of the system is verified through simulation and experimental results.

  • The conventional central photo voltaic inverters have several problems. First, shadow problem in each solar panel, and high DC voltage problem from each panel because of concentration to one central inverter. Therefore, module integrated inverter is proposed to solve these problems. The inverter should be small and cost effective. The cost and size in the inverter depend on the inductor. So the switching frequency should be increased to reduce the inductor and total size, but there is a problem in efficiency because of the losses in turn-on and turn-off. In the paper, the critical conduction mode(CRM) switching method is adopted to reduce the switching loss and interleaving method is proposed to increase the efficiency in Flyback converter. Finally, the validity of the proposed scheme is investigated with simulated and experimental results for a prototype system rated at 200W.

  • Recently, the demand for electricity is gradually increasing due to the rapid industrial development and the improvement of living standards. In the case of Korea, which is highly dependent on fossil fuels due to such a surge in electricity demand, reduction and freezing of greenhouse gas emissions due to international environmental regulations will immediately lead to a contraction in industrial activities. Accordingly, there are many difficulties in competition with advanced countries that want to link the environment with the country's industrial production activities, and the development of alternative energy as a countermeasure is of great interest around the world. Among these new power generation methods, small-scale power generation facilities with relatively small capacity include photovoltaic generation, wind power generation, and fuel cell generation. Among them, the fuel cell attracts the most attention in consideration of continuous operation, high power generation efficiency, and long-term durability, which are important factors for practical use. Therefore, in this paper, the fuel cell power generation system was researched and constructed by designing the power conversion circuit necessary to finally obtain the AC power used in our daily life by using the DC power generated from the fuel cell as an input.

  • The photovoltaic (PV) power conditioning system for small-scale applications has gained significant interest in the past few decades. However, the standalone mode of operation has been rarely approached. This paper presents a two-stage multi-level micro-inverter topology that considers the different operation modes. A multi-output flyback converter provides both the DC-Link voltage balancing for the multi-level inverter side and maximum power point tracking control in grid connection mode in the PV stage. A modified H-bridge multi-level inverter topology is included for the AC output stage. The multi-level inverter lowers the total harmonic distortion and overall ratings of the power semiconductor switches. The proposed micro-inverter topology can help to decrease the size and cost of the PV system. Transient analysis and controller design of this micro-inverter have been proposed for stand-alone and grid-connected modes. Finally, the system performance was verified using a 120 W hardware prototype.

  • This paper describes a new interactive inverter between a photovoltaic(PV) array and single-phase utility that avoid the bulky input (60Hz) transformer on the AC side. The interface employs a pwm boost converter on the DC side followed by a pwm current-forced single-phase rectifier for injecting the power from the PV array into the mains. The current waveform at the AC side remains sinusoidal and exactly in phase at all time. The circuit also has the advantage of requiring fewer switching device than high-frequency link system. This paper describes modeling of PV array and new system topology. Simulation results on the performance of the connection are also presented.
