  • The proposed scheme is based on the modified perturb and observe (P&O) algorithm combined with the sliding mode technique. A modified P&O algorithm based sliding mode controller is developed to study the effects of partial shade, temperature, and insolation on the performance of maximum power point tracking (MPPT) used in photovoltaic (PV) systems. Under partially shaded conditions and temperature, the energy conversion efficiency of a PV array is very low, leading to significant power losses. Consequently, increasing efficiency by means of MPPT is particularly important. Conventional techniques are easy to implement but produce oscillations at MPP. The proposed method is applied to a model to simulate the performance of the PV system for solar energy usage, which is compared to the conventional methods under non-uniform insolation improving the PV system utilization efficiency and allowing optimization of the system performance. The modified perturb and observe sliding mode controller successfully overcomes the issues presented by non-uniform conditions and tracks the global MPP. Compared to MPPT techniques, the proposed technique is more efficient; it produces less oscillation at MPP in the steady state, and provides more precise tracking.

  • This paper targets the development of micro-converter such as a power converter for photovoltaic module. In corresponding to the poor performance of centralized PV system under partial shading, the power converter for single PV module to maximize the energy harvest from PV module. The power converter is constantly tracking the maximum power point of photovoltaic system and increases energy output power. To minimize the quantity of devices and switchs, 320W solar micro-converter is developed using synchronous rectifier. From the basis of these results, through simulations and experiments were verified efficiency.

  • MPPT (maximum power point tracking) control is very important for the practical PV (photovoltaic) systems to maintain efficient power generating conditions irrespective of the deviation in the PV array insolation or/and temperature conditions. Although a plenty of researches have been done so far, most of them are too costly because of being too dependant on expensive sensors for measuring photovoltaic power and micro-processors for achieving elaborate and complicated control strategies. From this point of view, authors have been researching on sensor-less approaches for MPPT control, and have proposed two types of new control schemes 'Power Equilibrium Scheme' and 'Limit Cycle Scheme'. This paper summarises these two schemes with focussing on their :- operating principles and some results of simulation and experiments.

  • Tracking the Maximum Power Point (MPP) of a photovoltaic (PV) array is usually an essential part of a PV system. The problem addressed by Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) techniques is to find the voltage $V_{MPP}$ or current $I_{MPP}$ at which a PV array should operate to generate the maximum power output $P_{MPP}$ under a given temperature and irradiance. MPPT control methods such as the perturb and observe method and the incremental conductance method require a microprocessor or DSP to determine if the duty cycle should be increased or not. This paper proposes a simple and fast analog MPPT method. The proposed control scheme tracks the MPP very quickly and its hardware implementation is simple when compared with the conventional techniques. The new algorithm can successfully track the MPP even in the case of rapidly changing atmospheric conditions. In addition, it has higher efficiency than ordinary algorithms.

  • This paper presents energy self-sufficiency simulated in municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) by adopting solar energy production systems that were simulated by varying azimuth and super-hydrophilic coating on the surface of photovoltaic (PV). Relative to the national average energy consumption in WWTPs, the employment of 100 kW PV system was simulated to achieve 2.75% of energy self-sufficiency. The simulated results suggested that the installation of PVs toward South or Southwest would produce the highest energy self-sufficiency in WWTPs. When super-hydrophilic coating was employed in the conventional PV, 5% of additional solar energy production was achievable as compared to uncoated conventional PV. When 100 kW of PV system was installed in a future test-bed site, Kihyeung Respia WWTP located in Yongin, South Korea, the energy self-sufficiency by solar power was simulated to be 1.77%. The simulated solar power production by azimuth and super-hydrophilic coating will be useful reference for practitioners in designing the solar PV systems in the WWTPs.

  • The microgrid system is the combination of photovoltaic(PV) array, load, and battery energy storage system. The control strategies were defined as multi-modes of operation, including rest operation without use of battery, power charging, and power discharging, which enables grid connected mode or islanded mode. Photovoltaic power is a problem of the uniformity of power quality because the power generated from solar light is very sensitive to variation of insolation and duration of sunshine. As a solution to the above problem, energy storage system(ESS) is considered generally. There fore, in this study, we did basic research activities about optimization method of the amount of energy used, using a smart microgrid test-bed constructed in building. First, we analyzed the daily, monthly and period energy pattern amount of power energy used, and analyzed PV power generation level which is built on the roof. Utilizing building energy pattern analysis data, we was studied an efficient method of employing the ESS about building power consumption pattern and PV generation.

  • The key of this study is the technical development to maximize electric energy production through PV generation system. Under a conventional MPPT control method, both input voltage and input current coming out from PV array had to be feed backed. Then, the system has complex structure and may fail to track Maximum Power Point of PV array when weather conditions changed urgently. A PV output senseless MPPT control for PV generation system is possible to solve the mentioned above. The best advantage is that the current flowing into load is the only one considerable factor. In case of a huge photovoltaic generation system, it can be operated much more safely than a conventional system. In this paper, a novel PV output senseless MPPT control for the PV generation system was proposed and applied to the manufactured system and the experimental results were shown. Authors are sure that it is the most useful method to maximize power from photovoltaic system with only a feedback of load current.

  • This paper proposes an operational algorithm for a Photovoltaic Power-Hardware-In-Loop Simulator that is designed to improve the control algorithm and reliability of the PV Inverter. There was an instability problem in the PV PHILS with the conventional algorithm when it was connected tothe PV inverter. Initially, a real-time based computing unit with mathematical modeling of the PV array is implemented and a DC amplifier and an isolated device for DC power measurement are integrated. Several experiments were performed based on theabove concept undercertain conditions, which showed that the proposed algorithm is more effective for the PV characteristic test and grid evaluation test than the conventional method.

  • This paper proposes a novel maximum power point tracking (MPPT) system using a fuzzy logic control (FLC) algorithm for robust in-environment changing. The power available at the output of a photovoltaic (PV) cell continues to change with radiation and temperature because a solar cell exhibits nonlinear current-voltage characteristics. Therefore, the maximum power point (MPP) of PV cells varies with radiation and temperature. The MPPT methods are used in PV systems to make full utilization of the PV array output power, which depends on radiation and temperature. The conventional MPPT control methods such as constant voltage (CV), perturbation and observation (PO) and incremental conductance (IC) have been studied but these methods are problematic in that they fail to take into account the changing environment. The proposed FLC controller is based on the fuzzy control algorithm and facilitates robust control with the environmental changes. Also, the PV systems applied FLC controller is modeled by PSIM and the response characteristics of the FLC method according to environmental variations are analyzed through comparison with the performance of conventional methods. The validity of this controller is shown through response results.

Performance ratio (PR) of 3 PV systems with 3 desert-type PV modules using monitoring data for 1 year showed 85.5% on average. Annual degradation rate of 5 individual modules achieved 0.26%, the regression model using monitoring data for the specified interval of one year showed 0.22%. Root mean square error (RMSE) of 6 big data analysis models for power output prediction in May 2016 was analyzed 2.94% using a support vector regression model.
