When the PV module is illuminated in a high temperature region, solar cells are also exposed to the high temperature external environment. The operating temperature of the solar cell inside the module is increased, which causes the power drops. Various efforts have been made to reduce the operating temperature and compensate the power of solar cells according to the outdoor temperature such as installing of a cooling system. Researches have been also reported to lower the operating temperature of solar cells by improving the heat dissipation properties of the backsheet. In this study, we conducted a test to measure the internal temperature of each module components and the external temperature when the light was irradiated according to the surrounding temperature. Backsheets with different thermal conductivities were compared in the test. Finally, in order to explain the temperature difference between the solar cell and the outside of the module, we proposed an evaluation method of the heat transfer characteristics of photovoltaic modules with different backsheet.
In this study, 20.8% of a p-type Si bifacial solar cell was used to develop a photovoltaic (PV) module to obtain the maximum power under a limited installation area. The transparent back sheet material was replaced during fabrication with a white one, which is opaque in commercial products. This is very beneficial for the generation of more electricity, owing to the additional power generation via absorption of light from the rear side. A new model is suggested herein to predict the power of the bifacial PV module by considering the backside reflections from the roof and/or environment. This model considers not only the frontside reflection, but also the nonuniformity of the backside light sources. Theoretical predictions were compared to experimental data to prove the validity of this model, the error range for which ranged from 0.32% to 8.49%. Especially, under $700W/m^2$, the error rate was as low as 2.25%. This work could provide theoretical and experimental bases for application to a distributed and microgrid network.
This paper proposes an energy storage-assisted, series-connected module-integrated power conversion system that integrates a photovoltaic power conditioner and a charge balancing circuit. In conventional methods, a photovoltaic power conditioner and a cell-balancing circuit are needed for photovoltaic systems with energy storage devices, but they cause a complex configuration and high cost. Moreover, an imbalanced output voltage of the module-integrated converter for PV panels can be a result of partial shading. Partial shading can lead to the fault condition of the boost converter in shaded modules and high voltage stresses on the devices in other modules. To overcome these problems, a bidirectional buck-boost converter with an integrated magnetic device operating for a charge-balancing circuit is proposed. The proposed circuit has multiple secondary rectifiers with inductors sharing a single magnetic core, which works as an inductor for the main bidirectional charger/discharger of the energy storage. The secondary rectifiers operate as a cell-balancing circuit for both energy storage and the series-connected multiple outputs of the module-integrated converter. The operating principle of the cell-balancing power conversion circuit and the power stage design are presented and validated by PSIM simulation for analysis. A hardware prototype with equivalent photovoltaic modules is implemented for verification. The results verify that the modularized photovoltaic power conversion system in the output series with an energy storage successfully works with the proposed low-cost bidirectional buck-boost converter comprising a single magnetic device.
PV module has many power loss factors, and series resistance is the most important elements of them. It is therefore easy to expect the partial shading decrease the lifetime of the semiconductor depletion layer in thin film PV module. Different shading losses could be related with the hot spot which is critical in expecting the reliability issue. In this paper we have modelled the series resistance of the PV module with both different direction of the cell line and shading area of the panel. From the results, thin film a-Si PV module has shown different properties by shading direction.
Recently, the thickness of solar cell gets thinner to reduce the quantity of silicon. And the reduced thickness make it easy to be broken while PV module fabrication process. This phenomenon might make PV module's maximum power and durability down. So, when using thin solar cell for PV module fabrication, it is needed to optimize the material and fabrication condition which is quite different from normal thick solar cell process. Normally, gel-content of EVA sheet should be higher than 80% so PV module has long term durability. But high gel-content characteristic might cause micro-crack on solar cell. In this experiment, we fabricated several specimen by varying curing temperature and time condition. And from the gel-content measurement, we figure the best fabrication condition. Also we examine the crack generation phenomenon during experiment.
Most PV modules are fabricated by 6 cell-strings with solar cells connected in series. Moreover, bypass diodes are generally installed every 2 cell-strings to prevent PV modules from a damage induced by current mismatch or partial shading. But, in the case of special purpose PV module, like as BIPV (Building Integrated Photovoltaic), the number of cell-strings per module varies according to its size. Differ from a module employing even cell-strings, the configuration of bypass diode should be optimized in the PV module with odd strings because of oppositely facing electrodes. Hence, in this study, electrical characteristics of special purposed PV module with odd string was empirically and theoretically studied depending on arrangement of bypass diode. Here, we assumed that PV module has 3 strings and the number of bypass diodes in the system varies from 2 to 6. In case of 2 bypass diodes, shading on a center string increases short circuit current of the module, because of a parallel circuit induced by 2 bypass diodes connected to center string. Also, the loss is larger, as the shading area in the center string is enlarged. Thus, maximum power of the PV module with 2 bypass diode decreases by up to 59 (%) when shading area varies from 50 to 90 (%). On the other hand, In case of 3 and 6 bypass diodes, the maximum power reduction was within about 3 (W), even the shading area changes from 50 to 90 (%). As a result, It is an alternative to arrange the bypass diode by each string or one bypass diode in the PV module in order to completely bypass current in case of shading, when PV module with odd string are fabricated.
A step down chopper and PWM current source inverter is used for the connection between the PV array and the utility. This paper proposes chopper is controlled for the dc reactor decrease and PWM current source inverter is controlled to keep the output power at the maximum point for the PV. The PV current only is measured and employed for the power calculation combining the control parameter of the PWM current source inverter.
Recently, photovoltaic system has been studied widely as a renewable energy system, because it does not produce environmental pollution and it has infinity energy source from the sun. A study on photovoltaic system has a lot of problems like as reappearance and repetition of some situation in the laboratory experiment for development of MPPT algorithm and islanding detection algorithm. because output characteristics of solar cell are varied by irradiation and surface temperature of solar cell. Therefore, the assistant equipment which emulates the solar cell characteristics which can be controlled arbitrarily by researcher is require to the researchers for reliable experimental data. In this paper, the virtual implement of solar cell (VISC) system is proposed to solve these problems and to achieve reliable experimental result on photovoltaic system. VISC system emulates the solar cell output characteristics, and this system can substitute solar cell in laboratory experiment system. To realize the VISC, mathematical model of solar cell is studied for driving converter and the DC/DC converters are compared in viewpoint of tracking error using computer simulation. Output dynamic characteristic of PV array is varied by irradiation and PWM converter performance is studied using PSIM simulator.
Currently the variety of governmental business support and research for supplying solar energy have been actively progressed. As of now, however, There are no practical testing infrastructures of grid-connected photovoltaic system which test performance of solar power facility in domestic. Therefore, in KEPRI, there is in progress construction of practical testing ground of 500 kW class grid-connected PV System for developing the evaluation of the performance technology including the Module, PCS, and etc, that is the important instrument of the PV System, in Gochang area. It analyzed the site creation work for constructing the practical testing ground and new construction of control room and the unit standards, specifications and capacity of required equipment. For the system detailed design, configuration, instrument-specific parameters established, power generation predictions of Array Type and the components of testing ground are needed to build.

This paper presents the Performance of PV(Photovoltaic) system. the design of MPPT and the battery characteristic. The output power of PV depends on the environmental factors such as insolation and cell temperature. It is proposed that the MPPT is based on an simple power control algorithm. Furthermore the converter has to maintain the optimum duty ratio. A switching strategy of converter for battery may Protect against excessive discharge and overcharge. This paper includes discussion on system reliability power quality and effects of the randomness of the wind and the solar radiation on system design.
