In termperate zone planting rice at different date subjects the crop to different climatic condition. This study aimed at comparison of the change in source-sink relationship of the Japonica(J) and that of Indica Japonica(I$\times$J) type rice cultivars caused by shift of heading date. Two J-and two I$\times$J-type cultivars were made to head on Aug. 16, Aug. 26 and Sep. 5. Percent grain fertility was not changed in response to shift of heading date. Ripening patterns of 4 rice cultivars were similar to sigmoid curve type but when the heading date was delayed to Sep. 5, the form is changed to log type of curve. In J-type, physiological maturity was delayed about 5 day when headed at Sep. 5, in compare to headed at Aug. 16 and Aug. 26. However ripening was continued about 10 days when the diurnal, nocturnal and minimum temperature was above 17, 12$^{\circ}C$ and about 3~8$^{\circ}C$. In I$\times$J hybrid, real ripening was continued when the diurnal, nocturnal and minimum temperature was over 20, 17$^{\circ}C$, but if the minimum temperature was downed bellow 1$0^{\circ}C$, it was impossible. Simulated photosynthetic amount based on photosynthetic ability, temperature, leaf area and day length was varied according to changes in heading date and it was decreased seriously if the minimum temperature was fall down bellow 4$^{\circ}C$ in field, that's why decrease in photosynthetic ability and aging. The temperature range of optimum ripening was 21~26$^{\circ}C$, if there is nothing hindering factor.
There is a little information on the effect of calcium cloride ($CaCl_2$) which is used as deicing salt in Korea on the physiological responses of the street trees. Prunus sargentii is one of the most widespread tree species of street vegetation in Korea. In this study, the effect of $CaCl_2$ on photosynthetic apparatus such as chlorophyll fluorescence image and light response curve of P. sargentii in relation to their leaf and root collar growth responses were investigated. To study the effect of $CaCl_2$ treatment in the early spring, we irrigated twice in rhizosphere of P. sargentii (3-year-old) planted plastic pots with solution of 0.5%, 1.0%, 3.0% $CaCl_2$ concentration before leaf expansion. Results after treatments, total chlorophyll contents and the chlorophyll a/b, photosynthetic rate, quantum yield, dark respiration decreased with increasing $CaCl_2$ concentration. On the contrary, light compensation point increased with increasing $CaCl_2$ concentration. Through the linear regressions of correlation of photosynthetic rate with photosynthetic parameters (quantum yield, dark respiration and light compensation point), we found a significant relationship (p<0.05) between photosynthetic rate and quantum yield and light compensation point except dark respiration. Calcium cloride ($CaCl_2$) induced inhibition of photochemical efficiency ($F_v/F_M$) and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) were found in treatments of $CaCl_2$, and these reduction rates between control and CaCl2 treatments were drastically showed at 80 days. We suggest that physiological activities are limited from treatment of $CaCl_2$. These reductions of photosynthetic apparatus ability caused eventually the reduction of leaf and diameter at root collar growth.

For the development of biological wastewater treatment process using photosynthetic bacteria (PSB), photosynthetic sludge process consisted of anaerobic digestion and PSB reactor were designed for the treatment of swine wastewater and the optimal operating conditions in flask-scale were examined. Photosynthetic bacteria from soil, pond, rice field, ditch etc. were isolated in synthetic medium containing high amount of organic acids and finally isolated one strain KK14 which showed the most degradating ability of organic acids was selected for the treatment of swine wastewater. It was identified as Rhodopseudomonas palustris. In the anaerobic digestion stage, the maximum organic acid productivity was obtained at pH 5.0, $37^{\circ}C$, HRT 2 day and under anaerobic standing condition. The optimal operating conditions of PSB reactor for the treatment of swine wastewater were pH 7.0, $30^{\circ}C$ under 4,000 lux illumination, and optimal initial COD loading (kg COD/kg D. C. W of PSB) was 2 (20% v/v seeding) in the main purification stage. Maximum removal rate of COD reached 92% under the above optimal conditions for 5 days.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of seasonal changes on some of the morphological and physiological characteristics, including the photosynthetic abilities and dark respiration, of young ginseng plants due to planting location under shading. The results obtained are as follows: 1. Seedlings and 2-year old plants planted in the back rows appeared to have broader leaf area, and their leaf weight greatly increased in September. Chlorophyll content was significantly reduced in September rather than in June and the plants in the back rows had more chlorophyll content than those in the front rows. 2. There was no difference in the light compensation point between the front and back rows in June, while in September the light compensation point of 2-year old ginseng leaves was much lower for plants in the back rows compared with those in the front rows. A difference in the light saturation point was not noticeable between plants in the front and back rows in June and September. But the light saturation point of 2-year old ginseng leaves at $15^{\circ}C$ was high in June, while it was high at $20^{\circ}C$ high in September. 3. Maximum photosynthetic ability was attained at $15^{\circ}C$ in June and at $20^{\circ}C$ in September. During June no significant difference in photosynthetic ability was found between plants in the front and back rows, but in September the amount of photosynthesis was significantly increased at the leaves of seedlings as well as 2-year old plants planted in the back rows. 4. The optimum temperature for maximum photosynthesis in 2-year old plants ranged from $14.0^{\circ}C$ to $14.5^{\circ}C$ in June and from $19.5^{\circ}C$ to $20.5^{\circ}C$ in September. However, the optimum temperature for maximum photosynthesis in the seedlings was from $21.2^{\circ}C$ to $21.6^{\circ}C$ in September, but a significant difference in the optimum temperature for the maximum photosynthesis in seedlings and 2-year old plants was not noticeable between the front and back rows. 5. The respiration rate was rather high in seedlings compared with 2-year old plants. During September the respiration rate in seedlings was much lower in the back rows than in the front rows. The rate of increase in the respiration of 2-year old plants was higher at September than June. The increase in respiration rate due to temperature was more significant in seedlings than 2-year old plants. 6. In September, the level of $Q_{10}$ in 2-year old plants was much lower than that found in seedlings. During June, 2-year old plants showed lower $Q_{10}$ levels at a temperature difference between $15^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$; but in September this occurred at a temperature difference between $20^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$.

This study was conducted to determine the optimal light conditions for the in situ and ex situ conservation and restoration of Osmanthus insularis, a rare plant species in South Korea. Evaluations included the growth performance, leaf morphological features, photosynthetic characteristics, and photosynthetic pigment contents of seedlings grown from April to November under different light conditions (100%, 55%, 20%, and 10% relative light intensity). The shoot lengths and root collar diameters did not differ significantly with relative light intensity. The dry weights of leaves, stems, and roots and the leaf number were highest at 55% relative light intensity. The leaf shape showed morphological acclimation to light intensity, with leaf area decreasing and thickness increasing as the relative light intensity increased. Several leaf parameters, including photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance at light saturation point, net apparent quantum yield, and dark respiration, as well as chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and carotenoid contents, were all highest at 55% relative light intensity. Under full light conditions, the leaves were the smallest and thickest, but the chlorophyll content was lower than at 55% relative light intensity, resulting in lower photosynthetic ability. Plants grown at 10% and 20% relative light intensity showed lower chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and carotenoid contents, as well as decreased photosynthetic and dark respiration rates. In conclusion, O. insularis seedlings exhibited morphological adaptations in response to light intensity; however, no physiological responses indicating enhanced photosynthetic efficiency in shade were evident. The most favorable light condition for vigorous photosynthesis and maximum biomass production in O. insularis seedlings appeared to be 55% relative light intensity. Therefore, shading to approximately 55% of full light is suggested for the growth of O. insularis seedlings.
We have examined the bioaccumulation patterns and the ecophysiological responses (photosynthetic pigment and total antioxidative capacity) of Monochoria korsakowi exposed to various cadmium concentrations, one of major environmental pollutants. Cadmium ion contents in M. korsakowi increased significantly with higher cadmium concentration, and most of the accumulated cadmium was found in the root parts. Biomass of each part decreased with higher cadmium concentration. As cadmium treatment concentration was increased, chlorophyll a content was decreased, whereas chlorophyll b content was increased. However, the variations of total chlorophyll and carotenoid contents were not evident. Total antioxidative capacity in the leaves of cadmium treated M. korsakowi increased greatly with higher cadmium concentration. We considered these results as indicative of the ability of M. Korsakowi plants to take up cadmium from wetlands.
This study was conducted to determine the extent of drought resistance based on physiological responses of Calystegia soldanella under water deficit. In order to investigate the changes of plant growth, stomatal density, photosynthesis, chlorophyll fluorescence, the contents of chlorophyll and carotenoid, osmolality, total ion contents, the contents of carbohydrate and proline, C. soldanella was grown under well watered and drought stressed conditions for 12 days. In this study, water-deficit resulted in remarkable growth inhibition of C. soldanella. The effect of water-deficit on plant growth was associated with low osmotic potential of soil. On day 12 after drought treatment, dry weight, relative water contents, number and area of leaves and stem length were lower than those of control. The stomatal conductance and net photosynthetic rate were significantly reduced in water stressed plant to regulate inner water contents and $CO_2$ exchange through the stomatal pore. Chlorophyll fluorescence and chlorophyll contents were not different in comparison with the control, indicating that the efficiency of photosystem II was not affected by drought stress. This results could be explained that water-deficit in C. soldanella limits the photosynthetic rate and reduces the plant's ability to convert energy to biomass. A significant increase in total ion contents and osmolality was observed on day 7 and day 12. Accumulation of proline in leaves is associated with the osmotic adjustment in C. soldanella to soil water-deficit. Consequently, this increase in osmolality in water stressed plant can be a result in the increase of ion contents and proline.

We compared absorption and adsorption rates of air pollutants by plants to eveluate the difference of absorption capacity of plant species and kinds of air pollutants, when foilage plants were exposed to $O_3$ and $SO_2$ singly and combiningly. Absorption and adsorption rates of three foliage plants exposed to $O_3$ and $SO_2$ singly and in combination varied a little according to plant species and kinds of air pollutants. But total absorption rate of Spathiphyllum patinii and Ficus benjamina was higher, and it was lower in Pachira aquatica. When exposed to $O_3$ and $SO_2$ at the same concentration, Pachira aquatica absorbed more $O_3$ than $SO_2$, in contrast to Ficus benjamina absorbing more $SO_2$. On the other hand, Spathiphyllum patinii absorbed as much $O_3$ as $SO_2$. Physiological activities were measured since absorption rates were affected by physiological characteristics of plants. Spathiphyllum patinii and Ficus benjamina showed higher photosynthetic and transpiration rates, and Pachira aquatica showed lower values. And diffusive and stomatal resistences of Pachira aquatica were higher than those of two other species. These results showed that absorption capacity was affected by the differences of physiological characteristics. Absorption capacity of air pollutants increased in plants, such as Spathiphyllum patinii and Ficus benjamina, which had high $SO_2$ absorption rate. We found that plants showing high $CO_2$ absorption rates absorb a lot of air pollutnats.

The characteristics of nitrogen removal by the free cell and the immobilized cell of R. capsulatus were investigated. Denitrification by R. capsulatus cells resulted in reduction of ORP with the rapid depletion of DO and the increase of pH. Without accumulation of nitrite, the removal efficiencies of ${NO_3}^-$-N for the free cell and the immobilized cell were 99.1 and 99.3%, respectively. During the three-month experiment of goldfish breeding equipped with a water-purification biofilter, the average values of pH and total cell numbers present in an aquarium were not significantly different between water-purification system and the control. The average concentrations of ${NH_4}^+$-N and ${PO_4}^{2-}$-P in water-purification system were relatively low, compared to that in the control. Goldfish died at $11^{th}$, $16^{th}$, $43^{rd}$, and $67^{th}$ days in the control, while goldfish died at $10^{th}$, $20^{th}$, and $39^{th}$ days in the water-purification system. On the days of goldfish's death, the total concentrations of nitrogenous compounds except for ${NO_2}^--N$ were higher than those on the other days of the experiment, especially with the concentrations of ${NH_4}^+$-N ranging from 7.4 to 13.5 mg/L. The water-purification system also showed the less turbidity of water with more active movement of goldfish than the control. PVA gel beads showed almost the full denitrifying ability even after the long-term experiment. As a result, the water-purification system was effective to remove nitrogenous compounds with better survival of goldfish.
Transgenic tobacco plants were produced by the transformation of ginseng CAB gene using Agrobacterium tumefaciens LBA4404. The presence of CAB gene in the second generation of transgenic tobacco plant was confirmed by genomic PCR. The photosynthetic ability of transgenic plants was higher than normal tobacco plants and the maximum photosynthetic point of transgenic and normal tobacco plants was 500 $\mu$mol m$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ . The photosynthesis of C7, C11, 1, C14 cell lines was higher than normal plants at all the light intensities investigated. The photosynthesis of C2, C11, C14 cell lines in 90% dark condition was higher than normal plants. The chlorophyll contents of transgenic tobacco plants were almost same as normal plants. The % of dry weight, nicotine content, total sugar and nitrogen contents of harvested transgenic tobacco plant leaves were almost same as normal plants.
