  • This article explores the photographic work of North American artist Jeff Wall. While his photographic work has been much discussed in terms of aesthetics and composition highlighting his methodological appropriation of modernist painters such as Eduard Manet and Piet Mondrian, the political aspect of his work remains to be investigated. This article especially unpacks the complicated dialectical relationship between the formal aesthetics and the political nature of his works by visiting his photographic work in the context of contemporary debates on the contradiction and conflicts between aesthetics and politics in photographic form. Ultimately, this article argues that Wall's photograph acquires its political meaning by problematizing the reified social representation of the other in a way in which the materiality and/or otherness of the photographic object is registered within the photographic frame and by representing the violence of the social representation and the un-representability of the object/other.

  • Photosensitivity of silver halide emulsion depends on the properties of the microcrystals. Size, shape, grain distribution and chemical composition as well as the inner structure or the topography of the latent image specks affect on the optical properties and play an important role in the photographic process. In the present paper, a study on the sensitization of emulsion containing AgBrClI core/shell grains showed that for the given size, shape, halide content and crystal habit, under the optimal conditions the photosensitivity of the heterojunction type grains are different from that of the common regular grains. The optimal photosensitivity was obtained at the iodide content of 2.0 mo1%.

  • Basic frictional angle is a parameter that can estimate shear strength of rock, and is a design parameter employed in slope stability analysis. Basic frictional angle generates various results in accordance with mineral composition, apart from rock surface roughness itself. This paper describes the correlation of basic frictional angle and mineral composition. The basic frictional angle is measured with the aid of the modified tilt testing apparatus, and its reliability is improved by the statistical method. Also, mineral composition is identified through the photographic analysis on rock specimen, and verified through the thin section analysis.

  • The aim of this study was to gain an understanding of the element playfulness in fashion photographs related to openness and multiple significance in contemporary art. A total of 105 fashion photographs from US and UK Vogue magazine editorials and advertisements for the last five years were selected for the study. The photographs were analyzed in two main categories - the contextual element of themes, and the elements of visual expression; composition, models, objects and editing technology. The element of playfulness in the photographs were found to be divided into themes of infantile fantasy, social satire and situational dissonance, and elements of visual expression were found to express image distortion, expansion, exaggeration, reduction, and optical illusions. A photography type termed as infantile fantasy and social satire have descriptive characteristics and usually deliver the message by using models and objects to present a certain situation or express social satirical viewpoint and reflective attitude by using objects and photographic skills. A photography type termed as situational dissonance is characterized by immediately understood expressions and usually clarify the message by using a photographic technology such as editing the printed image or expect the model to express an exaggerated poses and ridiculous expressions, causing an optical illusion. Visually expressed and composed scene using composition, models, objects and editing technology is a specific character of photograph and due to the advances in computer editing technology it has been able to express the various playfulness.

  • In this paper, we propose a line composition based searching system which retrieves compositionally similar photo from the DB of the line-compositional photos. To develop the measure of compositional similarity, we carried out a survey to find which feature is discriminative for retrieving. Based on the results of the survey, we developed the measure of compositional similarity and it was applied the proposed searching system. We also show the results of the recall and the precision to evaluate the performance of the proposed system.

  • Astronomical plates have a very large density range (dynamical range). Many exposed astronomical photographic plates do not provide detailed structures for very high densities, and some include hidden images for very low densities. The former can be fixed through 'Unsharp Masking' technique and the latter through 'Image Amplification' technique. Besides, we can find intrinsic colors of celestial bodies through 'Tri Color Composition' technique. Images of several plates which were observed from Sobaek Observatory with 61cm telescope are reproduced by the three kinds of image reproducing techniques. As reproduced image examples, we display an Orion nebula and a waxing crescent moon images through unsharp masking technique and an M81 image through image amplification technique. An Orion nebula and a Dumbbell nebula images are also given as results of tri color composition technique.

  • According to photography, lines are important elements that make composition and mood of photo. In this paper, we proposed a measure for compositional dissimilarity between photos using lines which are basic elements of photography. To identify patterns of lines which classify composition of photos, we investigated both features of compositionally same photos and compositionally different photos. Then we developed effective measure for compositional dissimilarity between photos by applying the investigated features to the measure, and we implemented an image searching system which retrieves photo compositionally similar to given query to evaluate performance of proposed method. The searching system showed the precision of about 85% maximally for the highly matched 10 results and was capable of reliably retrieving compositionally similar to given query even if some objects were included in photos.

  • The purpose of this study is to comprehend western style in fashion and to contemplate the hybrid tendency reflected on western style, thereby to analyze the aesthetic characteristics of the hybrid tendency of western style. For such purposes, this study first examines western style historically, in order to analyze hybrid tendency reflected on western style, and conduct a case study by analyzing photographic materials of pr t- -porter collection since 1980s. The result of this study is as follows: the hybrid tendency reflected on western style are modification and fusion of regional culture, adaptation and composition of subcultures, and appropriation of sexual minority culture. (1) Modification and fusion of regional culture is expressed in ethnic items and patterns of embroidery, mixing Mexican and Spanish, American Indian and American cultural references. (2) Adaptation and composition of subcultures emphasize traditional or vintage western style by mixing characteristics of western and other subcultures. (3) Appropriation of sexual minority culture is expressed in rhinestone chaps and fetish corset, glitter rodeo suit, reminiscent of drag or queer cultural references. The result of this study will provide basis which can be utilized in the development and educational background of fashion design.

  • The modern fashion photograph is interpreted as diverse versions via individual perspectives and thus induces meaning as individuals compose diverse worlds. The researcher perceived the act of reading the significance of the modern fashion photograph from the aspect of the diverse worlds that the receivers comprise, and the researcher sought to highlight this with the ways of worldmaking, as in Nelson Goodman's concept of irrealism. This study sought the transitional structure of the significance of fashion photographs through the irrealism of Goodman and theoretically considered the way in which the worldmaking was organized. The study collected fashion photos shown in fashion magazines and fashion brand catalogs from 2005 to 2010 for a study of the precedent theories and a survey of photographic materials to select characteristics based on Goodman's Ways of Worldmaking. Goodman suggested the five ways of composition and decomposition, deformation, weighting, deletion and supplementation, and ordering as the ways of worldmaking. The composition and decomposition way leads to habit and perpetuation due to existing concepts or intimateness. It can also be considered that the composition and the decomposition way occur coincidentally with other ways due to the previous worlds in which users connote during the process through which the fashion photos were composed and decomposed, deformed, weighted, and ordered. Therefore, this study researched the four ways of composition and decomposition, deformation, weighting, and ordering by integrating them into fashion photos based on the five types of ways reviewed through a theoretical consideration.

  • The degree of supersaturation is an important measure for the operation of crystallization processes, because it is directly related to the control of crystal size distribution and shape. A conventional technique utilizing solution composition and temperature has a variety of problems caused from the measurement error and the handling of analyzing samples. A monitoring system of the supersaturation using a quartz crystal sensor is proposed here, and its performance is examined applying different manipulations of coolant temperature. The experimental outcome and photographic examination indicate that the measurements of resonant frequency and resistance of the sensor can be used for the prediction of the formation and growth of solid crystal from the crystallization process. The monitoring system eliminates the intrinsic error source of the conventional system to give the improved measurement and on-line application availability.
