  • We would like to develop a short-term model to predict the time-related concentration of ozone whose reaction mechanism is complex. The paper targets Seoul where an ozone alert system has recently been employed. In order to develop a short-term prediction model for ozone, we suggested the Ozone Peak Indicator(OPI), an equivalent of the potential daily maximum ozone concentration, with precursors being the only limiting factor, and we calculated the Ozone Peak Indicarot as OPI={$ rac{(O_3)_{max}cdot(H_{eH})_{max}(Rad)_{max}$ to preclude the influence of mixing height and solar radiation on the daily maximum ozone concentration. The OPI on the day of the prediction is to be calcultated by using the relation between OPI and the initial value of precursors. The basic prediction formula for time-related ozone concentration was established as $O_3(1)={(OPI)cdot Rad(t-2)H_{eH}}$, using the OPI, solar radiation two hours before prediction and mixing height. We developed, along with the basic formula for predicting photochemical oxidants, "SEOM"(Seoul Empirical Oxidants Model), a Fortran program that helps predict solar radiation and mixing height needed in the prediction of ozone pollution. When this model was applied to Seoul and an analysis of the correlation between the observed and the predicted ozone concentrations was made through SEOM, there appeared a very high correlation, with a coefficient of 0.815. SEOM can be described as a short-term prediction model for ozone concentration in large cities that takes into account the initial values of precursors, and changes in solar radiation and mixing height. SEOM can reflect the local characteristics of a particular and region can yield relatively good prediction results by a simple data input process.t process.

  • We measured $^1H$ and $^{13}C$ nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra of Humic-like substances (HULIS) in urban atmospheric aerosols isolated by diethylaminoethyl (DEAE) and hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) resin to characterize their chemical structure. HULIS isolated by DEAE resin were characterized by relatively high contents of aromatic protons and relatively low contents of aliphatic protons in comparison with HULIS isolated by HLB resin, while the contents of protons bound to oxygenated aliphatic carbon atoms were similar. These results were consistent with the results of the $^{13}C$ NMR analysis and indicate that hydrophobic components were more selectively adsorbed onto HLB, while DEAE resins selectively retained aromatic carboxylic acids. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the chemical structural features of HULIS were significantly different between spring and summer samples and that these disparities were reflective of their different sources. The estimated concentrations of HULIS in spring were found to be regulated by vehicle emissions and pollen dispersion, while the behavior of HULIS in summer was similar to photochemical oxidant and nitrogen dioxide concentrations. The proportion of aliphatic protons for summer samples was higher than that for spring samples, while the proportion of aromatic protons for summer samples was lower than that for spring samples. These seasonal changes of the chemical structure may also involve in their functional expression in the atmosphere.

  • In order to quantitatively evaluate the effect of fly ash (FA) as partial replacement of cement on the life-cycle environmental impact of concrete, a comprehensive database including 4023 laboratory mixes and 2120 plant mixes was analyzed. The environmental loads on the life-cycle assessment were quantitatively converted into environmental impact indicators through categorization, characterization, normalization and weighting process. The life-cycle environmental impacts of concrete could be classified into three categories including global warming, photochemical oxidant creation and abiotic resource depletion. Furthermore, these environmental impacts of concrete was decreased with the increase of the replacement level of FA and governed by the unit content of ordinary portland cement (OPC). As a result, simple equations to assess the environmental impact indicators could be formulated as a function of the unit content of binder and the replacement level of FA.

  • This study aims to analyze characteristics of environmental load for the construction phase of PSC beam bridge based on Life Cycle Assessment. For detail computation of environmental load, the construction materials and energy consumption are derived from the BOQ, also connecting with environmental load by Korea LCI Database Information Network. The characteristic of environmental impact was analyzed by 25 cases and cut-off ratio was 80% to 94%. The result sorted by construction materials revealed that environmental load were 53.3% for ready-mixed concrete, 9.6% for wire rod, 7.8% for rebar, 6.8% for cement, 5.5% for plywood, and 5.2% for energy. Furthermore, the result of environmental impact revealed that 45.5% for global warming, 30.4% for abiotic resources depletion, 10.5% for human toxicity, and 8.9% for photochemical oxidant creation. In the future, we can make a decision considering environmental load based on LCA at design phase.

  • Ozone concentration in Tokyo Metropolitan area is one of the most serious issues of the local air quality. Tropospheric ozone is formed by radical reaction including volatile organic compound (VOC) and nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$). Reduction of the emission of reactive VOC is a key to reducing ozone concentrations. VOC is emitted from anthropogenic sources and also from vegetation (biogenic VOC or BVOC). BVOC also forms ozone through $NO_x$ and radical reactions. Especially, in urban area, the BVOC is emitted into the atmosphere with high $NO_x$ concentration. Therefore, trees bordering streets and green spaces in urban area may contribute to tropospheric ozone. On the other hand, not all trees emit BVOC which will produce ozone locally. In this study, BVOC emissions have been investigated (terpenoids: isoprene, monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes) for 29 tree species. Eleven in the 29 species were tree species that did not emit BVOCs. Three in 12 cultivars for future planting (25 %) were found to emit no terpenoid BVOCs. Eight in 17 commonly planted trees (47%) were found to emit no terpenoid BVOC. Lower-emitting species have many advantages for urban planting. Therefore, further investigation is required to find the species which do not emit terpenoid BVOC. Emission of reactive BVOC should be added into guideline for the urban planting to prevent the creation of sources of ozone. It is desirable that species with no reactive BVOC emission are planted along urban streets and green areas in urban areas, such as Tokyo.

  • In this research, life cycle inventory database (LCI DB) was developed for elastomeric bearing employing life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology additionally the reliability improvement rate in the evaluation of the environmental load of the bridge was analyzed. As are result of impact assessment by 6 major impact categories, production of elastomeric bearing puts on environmental impact in the order of resource depletion, global warming, photochemical oxidant creation. and among a wide variety of input, steel plates contributes in most of the impact categories. As a result of applying the elastomeric bearing LCI database constructed in this study, the environmental loads increased by 0.53% on average, and the cut-off based on the cost of input materials increased by 11.36%. It is anticipated that it will be possible to improve the credibility and to provide data based on current production technology, such as estimating GHG emissions and evaluating environmental load, by constructing elastomeric bearing LCI DB.

  • In this study, quantitative environmental impact assessments of the VSL anchor and RB(Reaming and Bearing) anchor systems were conducted after a life-cycle assessment (LCA). In addition, improvements which reduce the adverse environmental effects of the RB anchor system were confirmed through comparisons with results with a VSL anchor system. Both results showed that water ecotoxicity and global warming are the most important in environmental influences. To determine the effect of reducing the RB anchor system environment, the result was normalized for the environmental impact category. Most items appeared to have been improved with regard to the RB anchor system. The most significant improvement was a 77% decrease in POC levels(photochemical oxidant creation). Greenhouse gas emissions, related to global warming, were decreased by 44%. It is expected that these quantitative environmental impact assessment results will serve as the basis of an anchor system for civil engineering and environmental impact assessments.

  • Objectives: Ozone ($O_3$) advisories are issued by provincial/prefectural and city governments in Korea and Japan when oxidant concentrations exceed the criteria of the related country. Advisories issued only after exposure to high $O_3$ concentrations cannot be considered ideal measures. Forecasts of $O_3$ would be more beneficial to citizens' health and daily life than real-time advisories. The present study was undertaken to present a simplified forecasting model that can predict surface $O_3$ concentrations for the afternoon of the day of the forecast. Methods: For the construction of a simple and practical model, a multivariate regression model was applied. The monitored data on gases and climate variables from Japan's air quality networks that were recorded over nearly one year starting from April 2016 were applied as the subject for our model. Results: A well-known inverse correlation between $NO_2$ and $O_3$ was confirmed by the monitored data for Iksan, Korea and Fukuoka, Japan. Typical time fluctuations for $O_3$ and $NO_x$ were also found. Our model suggests that insolation is the most influential factor in determining the concentration of $O_3$. $CH_4$ also plays a major role in our model. It was possible to visually check for the fit of a theoretical distribution to the observed data by examining the probability-probability (P-P) scatter plot. The goodness of fit of the model in this study was also successfully validated through a comparison (r=0.8, p<0.05) of the measured and predicted $O_3$ concentrations. Conclusions: The advantage of our model is that it is capable of immediate forecasting of surface $O_3$ for the afternoon of the day from the routinely measured values of the precursor and meteorological parameters. Although a comparison to other approaches for $O_3$ forecasting was not carried out, the model suggested in this study would be very helpful for the citizens of Korea and Japan, especially during the $O_3$ season from May to June.

  • Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) has been studied on the reuse of glass bottles. The system boundary in this study encompassed from gate to gate such as production and transportation. A 360 mL volume of a glass bottle was selected as the functional unit. The environmental impact assessments was studied on 6 categories including abiotic resource depletion, acidification, eutrophication, global warming, ozone depletion, and photochemical oxidant creation. The results showed that the most significant impact categories were abiotic resource depletion (48.63%) and global warming (46.27%), and the rest categories revealed insignificant impacts. In the whole system, the chemicals used for the new bottle production revealed the major contribution to the environmental impacts (71.24%), followed by the use of electricity (16.74%) and transportation (11.8%). In addition, the environmental impact of sodium silicate to be put into the stage of the new bottle production was found to be 45.68%, causing severe influence on abiotic resource depletion and global warming.

  • In this research, through LCA analysis, the environmental impact of automotive engine manufacturing and re-manufacturing was analyzed from the perspective of the entire process, and the greenhouse gas reduction effect was calculated based on this. The amount of greenhouse gas emitted from the process of acquiring and manufacturing raw materials for automotive engines is about 3,473 kg for new manufacturing and 872 kg for re-manufacturing. Thus, the amount of greenhouse gas reduction by engaging in re-manufacturing is about 2,601 kg; the analysis shows a reduction effect in each part of the entire process except for the processing stage. As a result of the LCA weighted analysis, the environmental impact of new product manufacturing was found to be 1.07E+03 Eco-point, and it was 2.67E+02 Eco-point for re-manufacturing. The share of GWP(Global Warming Potential) among the six major impact categories(Abiotic Depletion Potential, Acidification Potential, Eutrophication Potential, Global Warming Potential, Ozone-layer Depletion Potential, Photochemical Oxidant Creation Potential) as high at 99.72%(new manufacturing) and 99.68%(re-manufacturing).
