  • Zinc nitrate hexahydrate [$Zn(NO_3){\cdot}6H_2O$] and sodium hydroxide [NaOH] were used as source reagents in the preparation of ZnO nanoparticles in an aqueous solution containing deionized water and ethanol in a ratio of 2:5 (v/v). ZnO nanoparticles were heated in an electric furnace at $700^{\circ}C$ for 2 h under an atmosphere of inert argon gas. The morphological and structural properties of the nanoparticles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD). UV-vis spectrophotometry was used to analyze the photocatalytic degradation of 3-nitrophenol with ZnO nanoparticles as photocatalyst under ultraviolet irradiation at 254 nm. Evaluation of the kinetic of the photo-catalytic degradation of 3-nitrophenol indicated that the degradation of 3-nitrophenol with ZnO nanoparticles obeyed the pseudo-first order reaction rate model.

  • Four different coatings deposited using cold spray process were studied with two different powder agglomerating techniques (spray d교 and evaporated powder) and using $TiO_2$ nano-sized powders with and without a 10wt% addition of ZnO. Characterization was performed by SEM, XRD and roughness test. Also the photocatalytic effect of the coatings was evaluated. Although the change of powder preparation techniques and the addition of ZnO into $TiO_2$ did not show appreciable variations in the surface morphology and Anatase phase transformation, it did show influence on the surface roughness of the coating, the highest roughness being found in the coatings made by spray powder prepared method. Regarding the photocatalytic effect it was observed that the using the spray dry coating and the addition of ZnO are promoter of purification at higher rates.

  • New visible photocatalyst(Nanovis$^{(R)}$) has been synthesized to overcome the barrier of limitation of UV light utilization of current $TiO_2$ photocatalyst. It was found that red shift of absorption spectrum to 550nm was achieved. Its physical properties were characterized by XRD, BET and TEM. It is also observed that Nanovis$^{(R)}$ has a photocatalytic activity for photodegradation of Trichloroethylene under visible light irradiation. V,VII group doped into substitutional sites of $TiO_2$ has proven to be indispensable for band-gap narrowing and photocatalytic activity. These test results lead us to conclude that Nanovis$^{(R)}$ can be used for IAQ improvemen and for photocatalytic water splitting to hydrogen.

  • In recent years, much attention has been paid to "Photocatalytic oxidation" as an alternative technique, where the pollutants are degraded by UV-irradiation in the presence of a semiconductor suspension such as titanium dioxide. $TiO_2$ is the most often used photocatalyst due to its considerable photocatalytic activity, high stability, non-environmental impact and low cost. 1n this research, the photocatalytic degradation of humic acid, acetaldehyde and methylene blue in $UV/TiO_2$ systems has been stydied. The effect of calcination temperature for manufacturing of $TiO_2$ photocatalysts and type of photocatalysts on photodegradation has been investigated. Photocatalysts with various metal ions(Mn, Fe, Cu and Pt) loading are tested to evaluate the effects of metal ions impurities on photodegradation. The photodegradation efficiency with $Pt-TiO_2$ or $Fe-TiO_2$ or $Cu-TiO_2$ is higher than Degussa P-25 powder. However, the photodegradation efficiency with $Mn-TiO_2$ is lower than Degussa P-25 powder. The photocatalytic properties of the nanocrystals were strongly dependent upon the crystallinity, particle size, standard reduction potential of various transition metal and electronegativity of various transition metal. As a result photocatalysts with various metal ion loading evaluated the effect of photodegradation.

  • In this work, a carbon-doped carbon nitride photocatalyst is successfully synthesized through a simple centrifugal spinning method after heat treatment. The morphology and properties of the prepared photo catalyst are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-vis spectrophotometer (UV-vis), and specific surface area. The results show that the band gap of the prepared sample, g-CN-10 is 2.1 eV, is significantly lower than that of pure carbon nitride, 2.7 eV. As the amount of cotton candy increased, the absorption capacity of the prepared catalyst for visible light is significantly enhanced. In addition, the degradation efficiency of Rhodamine B (RhB) by sample g-CN-10 is 98.8 % over 2 h, which is twice that value of pure carbon nitride. The enhancement of photocatalytic ability is attributed to the increase of specific surface area after the carbon doping modifies carbon nitride. A possible photocatalytic degradation mechanism of carbon-doped carbon nitride is also suggested.

  • Ti-SBA-15 catalysts doped with samarium ion were synthesized using conventional hydrothermal method. The physical properties of Sm/Ti-SBA-15 catalysts have been characterized by XRD, FT-IR, DRS and PL. In addition, we have also examined the activity of these materials on the photocatalytic decomposition of methylene blue. The Sm/ Ti-SBA-15 was shown to have the mesoporous structure regardless of Sm ion doping. With doping amount of 1% lanthanide ion, the pore size and pore volume of Sm(Er, Cs)/Ti-SBA-15 decreased and the surface area increased. For the purpose of vibration characteristics on the Ti-SBA-15 and Sm/Ti-SBA-15 photocatalysts, the IR absorption at 960 $cm^{-1}$ commonly accepted the characteristic vibration of Ti-O-Si bond. 1% of Sm/Ti-SBA-15 had the highest photocatalytic activity on the decomposition of methylene blue but the catalysts doped with Er ions had lower activity in comparison with pure Ti-SBA-15 catalyst.

  • $BiVO_4$ nanomaterial was synthesized from bismuth (III) nitrate pentahydrate [$Bi(NO_3)_3{\cdot}5H_2O$] and ammonium vanadate (V) [$NH_4VO_3$]. The $BiVO_4$-graphene nanocomposite was fabricated by calcining the $BiVO_4$ nanomaterial and graphene under an oxygen-free atmosphere at $700^{\circ}C$. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were employed to characterize structural and morphological properties of samples. The catalytic activity of the $BiVO_4$-graphene nanocomposite was studied for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol, 3-nitrophenol and 2-nitrophenol by sodium borohydride [$NaBH_4$]. The photocatalytic activity of the $BiVO_4$-graphene nanocomposite was demonstrated by the degradation of organic dyes like BG, MB, MO and RhB under irradiation at 365 nm. The catalytic and photocatalytic activity were studied by UV-vis spectrophotometry.

  • This study measured the photocatalytic activities of five $TiO_2$ samples commercially available in terms of the degradation rate of nine organic substrates. Efforts were made to correlate the activities with the properties of both catalysts and substrates but little correlation was found. The result clearly shows that the photocatalytic activities sensitively depend on the kind of the test substrates, which strongly supports the fact that the activity measured with one or two model compounds cannot represent the overall performance of a photocatalyst. Therefore, this multi-aspect and inconsistent activity of photocatalytic reaction should be fully understood prior to establish the standard protocol for the activity determination.

  • Photocatalysis has been applied to decompose the waste and toxic materials produced in daily life and in the global environment. Pure $TiO_2$ (Zn-$TiO_2$-0) and Zn-doped $TiO_2$ (Zn-$TiO_2$-x, x = 3-10 mol %) samples were synthesized using a novel sol-gel and ammonia-evaporation method. The Zn-doped $TiO_2$ samples showed high photocatalytic activity for the degradation of methylene blue (MB). The physicochemical properties of the samples were investigated using XRD, SEM, ICP, DLS and BET methods. In addition, the most important measurement of photocatalytic ability was investigated by a UV-vis spectrophotometer. The effects of the mol % of zinc ion doping in $TiO_2$ on photocatalytic activity were studied. Among the mol % Zn ions investigated, the Zn-$TiO_2$-9 sample showed the highest photoreactivity. This sample removed 91.4% of the MB after 4 h, while the pure $TiO_2$ only removed 46.4% of the MB.
