SnNb2O6 nanoplates were prepared by a solvothermal synthesis with water and ethanol mixed solvent. For improvement of their properties, as-prepared SnNb2O6 nanoplates also were calcined. The prepared powder was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), Transmission electron microscope (TEM), UV-vis spectroscopy, Raman spectrometer, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). The calcined nanoplates have a smaller surface area than the as-prepared nanoplates have. Nevertheless, in the case of the optical absorption properties, the calcined nanoplates could absorb more photon energy, due to their smaller band gaps. The Raman analysis revealed that the Nb-O bond length in the calcined nanoplates was longer than that in the as-prepared nanoplate. The higher optical absorption capability of the calcined nanoplates was attributed to the local structure variation within them. Furthermore the high crystallinity of the calcined nanoplates is effective in improving the generation of charge carriers. So, It was found that the calcined nanoplates exhibited superior photocatalytic activity for the evolution of H2 from an aqueous methanol solution than the as-prepared nanoplates under UV and visible irradiation. Therefore, the enhanced photocatalytic activity of the calcined nanoplate powder for H2 evolution was mainly attributed to its high crystallinity and improved optical absorption property resulting from the variation of the crystal structure.
In this study, we have prepared pitch binded AC (activated carbon)/$AC/TiO_2$ composites photocatalysts through carbon tetrachloride solvent method. The developed samples were characterized with surface properties, structural crystallinity between AC and $AC/TiO_2$, elemental identification and photocatalytic activity. The results of the textural surface properties demonstrate that there are slight increases in the BET surface area and adsorbed volume from adsorption isotherm of composite samples with increasing of the amount of AC. The SEM results present to the characterization of porous texture on the pitch/AC/$AC/TiO_2$ composites and homogenous compositions in the particle for all the materials used. From XRD data, a weak and broad carbon peak of graphene remained rutile peaks kept with anatase structure were observed in the X-ray diffraction patterns for the pitch/AC/$AC/TiO_2$ composites. The EDX spectra show the presence of C, O and S with strong Ti peaks. Most of these samples are richer in carbon and major Ti metal than any other elements. Finally, the excellent photocatalytic activity of the pitch/AC/$AC/TiO_2$ composites between relative concentration ($c/c_o$) of MB and UV irradiation time could be attributed to the both effects between photocatalysis of the supported $AC/TiO_2$ and adsorptivity of the two kinds of carbons.
The improved photocatalytic performance of a carbon/$TiO_2$ composite was studied for the Bisphenol A (BPA) decomposition. Titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) and a rice husk from Korea were heterogeneously mixed as the titanium and carbon sources, respectively, for 3 h at room temperature, and then thermally treated at $600^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in $H_2$ gas. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images revealed that the bulk carbon partially covered the $TiO_2$ particles, and the amount that was covered increased with the addition of the rice husk. The acquired carbon/$TiO_2$ composite exhibited an anatase structure and a novel peak at $2{\theta}=32^{\circ}$, which was assigned to bulk carbon. The specific surface area was significantly enhanced to 123~164 $m^2/g$ in the carbon/$TiO_2$ composite, compared to $32.43m^2/g$ for the pure $TiO_2$. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results showed that the Ti-O bond was weaker in the carbon/$TiO_2$ composite than in the pure $TiO_2$, resulting in an easier electron transition from the Ti valence band to the conduction band. The carbon/$TiO_2$ composite absorbed over the whole UV-visible range, whereas the absorption band in the pure$TiO_2$ was only observed in the UV range. These results agreed well with an electrostatic force microscopy (EFM) study that showed that the electrons were rapidly transferred to the surface of the carbon/$TiO_2$ composite compared to the pure $TiO_2$. The photocatalytic performance of the BPA removal was optimized at a Ti:C ratio of 9.5:0.5, and this photocatalytic composite completely decomposed 10.0 ppm BPA after 210 min, whereas the pure $TiO_2$ achieved no more than 50% decomposition under any conditions.
This study was carried out to improve the photocatalytic reaction of TiO2 photocatalyst. During the photocatalytic reaction, OH radicals are generated and they have an excellent oxidation capability for wastewater treatment. To evaluate the OH radicals generated according to crystallographic structure of TiO2 nanotubes photocatalyst, a probe compound, 4-Chlorobenzoic acid was monitored to evaluate OH radical. Ultraviolet light was applied for photocatalytic reaction of TiO2. The 4-Chlorobenzoic acid solution was prepared at laboratory. TiO2 nanotube was grown on titanium plate by using anodization method. The annealing temperature for TiO2 nanotube was varied from 400 to 900 ℃ and the crystal forms of the TiO2 nanotube was analyzed. Depending on annealing temperature, TiO2 nanotubes have shown different crystal forms; 100% anatase (0 % rutile), 18.4 % rutile (81.6 % anatase), 36.6 % rutile (63.4 % anatase) and 98.6% rutile (1.4% anatase). As the annealing temperature increases, the rutile ratio increases. OH radical generation from 18.4 % rutile TiO2 nanotube plate was about 3.8 times higher than before annealing and 1.4 times higher than only 100 % anatase-TiO2 nanotube. The efficiency of the 18.4% rutile TiO2 nanotube was the best in comparison to TiO2 nanotube with 18.4 %, 36.6 % and 98.6 % rutile. As a result, photocatalytic ability of 18.4 % rutile-TiO2 nanotube plate was higher than 100 % anatase-TiO2 nanotube plate.
F-containing $TiO_2$ nanopowders are synthesized using simple wet processes (precipitation-based and hydrothermal) from ammonium hexafluorotitanate (AHFT, $(NH_4)_2TiF_6$) as a precursor to apply as a photocatalyst for the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB). The surface properties of the prepared samples are evaluated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results confirm that the synthesized anatase $TiO_2$ has sphere-like shapes, with numerous small nanoparticles containing fluorine on the surface. The photocatalytic activity of F-containing $TiO_2$ compared with F-free $TiO_2$ is characterized by measuring the degradation of RhB using a xenon lamp. The photocatalytic degradation of F-containing $TiO_2$ exhibits improved photocatalytic activity, based on the positive effects of adsorbed F ions on the surface.

$TiO_2/CuS$ nanocomposites were fabricated by precipitation of nanosized CuS via sonochemical method on electrospun $TiO_2$ nanofibers, and their structure, chemical bonding states, optical properties, and photocatalytic activity were investigated. In the $TiO_2/CuS$ nanocomposite, the position of the conduction band for CuS was at a more negative than that of TiO; meanwhile, the position of the valence band for CuS was more positive than those for TiO, indicating a heterojunction structure belonging to type-II band alignment. Photocatalytic activity, measured by decomposition of methylene blue under visible-light irradiation (${\lambda}$ > 400 nm) for the $TiO_2/CuS$ nanocomposite, showed a value of 85.94% at 653 nm, which represented an improvement of 52% compared to that for single $TiO_2$ nanofiber (44.97% at 653 nm). Consequently, the photocatalyst with $TiO_2/CuS$ nanocomposite had excellent photocatalytic activity for methylene blue under visible-light irradiation, which could be explained by the formation of a heterojunction structure and improvement of the surface reaction by increase in surface area.
Anatase $TiO_2$thin films as a photocatalyst were prepared by the reactive magnetron sputtering process. The $TiO_2$thin films were deposited on Si substrates under the various conditions : oxygen partial pressure, working pressure, sputtering time, and D.C. power. The photocatalystic degradation of $TiO_2$thin film have been studied to examine the contribution of surface morphology and crystallinity. The thin films with a good crystallinity or a rough surface showed a high photocatalytic degradation rate on phenol and E.coli 078 experiment. Compared with that of only UV radiation, the photocatalytic efficiency of $TiO_2$thin film under the UV radiation and the $O_2$ flow increased. We found that the crystallity and the morphology were the important factors on the photocatalytic efficiency of TiO$_2$thin film.
Photoirradiation at > 300 nm onto a suspension of platinized TiO$_2$ (TiO$_2$-Pt) particles in an aqueous solution. of N$_{\varepsilon}$-carbamyI-L-lysine (Lys(CONH)$_2$) induced the selective N-cyclization of Lys(CONH$_2$) into almost optically pure L-pipecolinic acid (PCA) under argon atmosphere at ambient temperature. Among various TiO$_2$-Pt catalysts, a P-25 (Degussa) powder platinized via impregnation from chloroplatinic acid followed by hydrogen reduction at 753 K exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity for Lys(CONH$_2$) consumption and L-PCA production. GC-MS analyses of L-PCA obtained photocatalytically from $^{15}$N$\alpha$-Lys(CONH$_2$) revealed the selective formation $^{15}$N-substituted L-PCA. This implies that the mechanism for L-PCA production contains selective cleavage of C$_{\varepsilon}$-N bond and intramolecular alkylation at $\alpha$-amino group. Effect of pH on the rate of this photocatalytic reaction was investigated in detail and compared with the pH-dependent charge distribution in Lys(CONH$_2$) molecule. It is clarified that protonation-deprotonation of $\alpha$-amino group gives marked influence on the rate and selectivity of the photocatalytic reaction. On the basis of these results, it is concluded that the selective production of optically pure L-PCA, especially in an acidic suspension of TiO$_2$-Pt, was attributed to the enhanced protonation of $\alpha$-amino group to prevent undesirable oxidation by photogenerated positive holes and blocking of $\varepsilon$-amino group to yield racemic Schiff base intermediate.
In this study, a portable total-phosphorus (TP) monitoring system utilizing a photocatalytic-reaction-based pretreatment method is proposed, fabricated, and characterized. Commercial TP monitoring systems are only used in laboratories because of their complex monitoring procedure, bulk-size, and high-cost. In particular, pretreatment in commercial TP monitoring systems is performed at high temperatures (> 120 ℃) and pressure (> 1.1 kg cm-2) making it difficult to minimize the scale of the systems. The proposed TP monitoring system employs a pretreatment method with a photocatalytic reaction; thus, its size can be reduced, as photocatalytic reactions occur at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. Analytes with various TP concentrations are pretreated using the proposed portable TP monitoring system and are quantitatively measured with an LED and a photodiode.
Photocatalytic $TiO_2$ films were prepared by anodic oxidation at 180 V and their structural difference caused by oxidation conditions was studies. The microstructure of $TiO_2$ films in $H_2SO_4$ and $H_2SO_4/H_2O_2$ solution was mixed type of rutile and anatase. However, the $TiO_2$ layer formed in $H_2SO_4/H_3PO_4$ and $H_2SO_4/H_3PO_4/H_2O_2$ mixture was mostly anatase type. All $TiO_2$ films prepared by anodic oxidation exhibited photocatalytic properties. The photocatalytic degradation of aniline blue was first order reaction with similar rate constants at all oxidative conditions examined in this work.
