  • Some selected fruit juices and fermented red grape juices were investigated to determine the phenolic components by the Folin-Ciocalteu method and antioxidant capacity using α, α-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) method. Commercial red grape beverages and red wines were also analyzed as control groups. In the juice, kiwi fruit had the highest phenolic components followed by orange(summer), red grape(Cambell Early:Yonng-Chun), mandarin orange(autumn), apple(Hong-Ok), cherry tomato, tomato and water melon. Whereas, on the antioxidant efficiency, tomato showed the highest free radical scavenging effect followed by orange(summer), cherry tomato, mandarin orange(autumn), apple(Aori) red grape(Cambell Early:Sung-Ju), kiwi fruit and water melon. The amount of pheonlic components of red wine was 2 times of that of fermented sugar added grape juice, however, the antioxidant efficiency of fermented sugar added grape juice was almost the same as that of red wine. It was found that no clear relationship could be shown between the content of phenolic component and antioxidant capacity of fruit juices and fermented red grape juices. The fruit juices from tomato, orange, cherry tomato, mandarin orange, red grape and fermented sugar added red grape juice showed high free radical scavenging effect and should be regarded as a valuable source of antioxidant.

  • The bioremediation of water system contaminated with phenolic compounds having endocrine-disrupting activity, i.e. 2,4-dichlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D), and 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4,5-T), was investigated by using ozone oxidation and activated sludge treatment. Ozone oxidation (ozonation time: 30 min) followed by activated sludge treatment (incubation time: 5 days) was an efficient treatment method for the conversion of phenolic compounds in water into carbon dioxide and decreased the value of total organic carbon (TOC) up to about 10% of initial value. Furthermore, 2,4-D was dissolved in water containing salt, i.e. artificial seawater (ASW), and this water was used as model coastal water contaminated with phenolic compounds. The activated sludge treatment (incubation time: 5 days) could consume significantly organic acids produced from 2,4-D in the model costal water by the ozone oxidation (ozonation time: 30min) and decrease the value of TOC up to about 35% of initial value.

  • Natural rubber bound phenolic antioxidant, 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-vinylphenol (2,6-DBVP), was prepared from natural rubber and 2,6-DBVP in both solution and melt state. The 2,6-DBVP had been synthesized from 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde and methyltriphenylphosphonium iodide ($MePPh_3I$) by Wittig reaction ($0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs, $N_2$ atmosphere). The conditions for preparation of natural rubber bound 2,6-DBVP (NR-DBVP) were optimized for both solution state (1 phr BPO and 8 phr 2,6-DBVP at $70^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs) and for melt state (1 phr BPO and 8 phr 2,6-DBVP at $70^{\circ}C$ for 10 mins, with rotor speed of 60 rpm). A thermoplastic vulcanizate was obtained using a compatibilizer, polypropylene modified with phenolic resin (PhHRJ-PP), in a closed mixer ($180^{\circ}C$ for 3 mins, rotor speed 60 rpm). The antioxidant properties of vulcanized NR-DBVP, using phenolic as the vulcanization system, were similar to NR with the conventional antioxidant BHT. In addition, the antioxidant, water leaching property of the thermoplastic vulcanizate of NR-DBVP/PP were good in comparison to a NR blend with BHT; the morphologies of these thermoplastic vulcanizates were similar.

  • The application of the high-performance insulation materials for buildings seems to be an essential measure for reducing energy use in buildings. Phenolic foam is a readily available insulation material with thermal conductivity of about 0.018 to 0.020 W/(mK). It has the advantage of higher thermal resistance and better fire resistance compared to other conventional building insulation materials. Insulation material used for building envelope is regarded as one of the decisive factors for building's energy load. Furthermore, the degradation of its thermal performance over time increasingly affects the building's energy use demand. Generally, the life span of conventionally built buildings is expected to be more than 50 years, so the long-term performance of insulation materials is critical. This paper aims to evaluate the long-term performance of phenolic form boards through an accelerated aging test. The tests were conducted according to BS EN 13166 and KS M ISO 11561. Based on the results of the accelerated aging test, the thermal performance variation of the material was analyzed, and then its aged value after 25 years was computed. Also, the characteristics of the phenolic foam board's long-term performance were also examined based on the standard testing methods adopted.

  • To find out the temporal and spatial variations in contents of sugar, phenolic compounds and mineral, the sap of Acer mono MAX. were harvested from several regions and periods, and those contents were determined by solvent fractionation, TLC, HPLC and atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Most of all the free sugar contained in the sap of Acer mono MAX. was sucrose, with range of 1.35 to 3.41%. The content of total phenolic compound in the sap of Acer mono MAX. was distributed from 0.034 to 0.151 mg/100m1, and most of phenolic acid was phloroglucinol. The contents of Na, K, Ca and Mg were ranged from 24.11 to 33.15, from 13.75 to 22.10, from 47.19 to 88.00 and from 2.48 to 6.31 ppm, respectively. Contents of sugar, phenolic compounds and mineral decreased sharply at the later harvest. Comparing two different methods of the sap harvest, bore method and groove method, the contents of compounds in the study were determined higher with groove method.

  • A methanol extract of mulberry cake prepared from mulberry fruits (Morus spp.) was shown to have strong scavenging activities against DPPH, superoxide and hydroxyl radicals. Eleven phenolic compounds were isolated from the mulberry cake by a combination of Diaion HP-20, silica gel (or polyamide), Sephadex LH-20 column chromatographies, preparative HPLC and TLC. Their chemical structures were characterized as procatechuic acid (PCA), caffeic acid (CA), cyanidin 3-O-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside (CyG) and cyanidin $3-O-\betaD-rutinoside$ (CyR), rutin (RT), isoquercitrin (IQT), astragalin (AG), quercetin (QT), morin (MR), di-hydroquercetin (DHQ), and 4-prenylmoracin (PM) by spectral analysis and the published data. Most of the phenolic constituents were effective scavengers of DPPH, superoxide and hydroxyl radicals, and especially caffeic acid and 4-prenylmoracin showed potent superoxide and hydroxyl radical scavenging activity, in which their activities were higher than that of the well-known antioxidant, BHT (p< 0.05). Dehydroquercetin and quercetin also exhibited strong superoxide and hydroxyl radical scavenging activities. These results suggest that mulberry cake containing antioxidant phenolic compounds may be useful as natural antioxidants in functional foods and cosmetics.

  • The study of total phenol (TP) content from 700 rice varieties was evaluated using the UV-Vis spectrophotometric method. The calibration curve of serial diluted gallic acid as a standard of this study showed the acceptable performances (R2 = 0.999, mean accuracy 90%) and the mean of % relative standard deviation (%RSD: 0.07%) within the range of 7.8 to 1000 ppm concentrations. The mean value of total phenol content from 700 rice varieties was 2723.15 ㎍/g ranged from 55.48 ㎍/g to 9922.23 ㎍/g and the mean %RSD was 2.5%. Furthermore, this study aim was to analyze and profile individual phenolic compounds in the rice genetic resources to construct an integrative database for development of new rice variety with high functionality for health and understanding of phenolics characteristics in the rice grain. Herein, we analyzed selected 100 rice varieties based on high TP content and identified total 15 phenolic compounds by LC-ESI-MS/MS. Among selected 100 rice genetic resources, the phenolic metabolites consisted of higher amount of flavonoid (catechin) and phenolic acid mainly protocatechuic acid. Further research of more selected rice genetic resources would be continued to provide for an integrative phenolics profile of different rice genetic resources.
