This study investigated the properties and antioxidative activities of phenolic acid concentrates of rice bran. Rice bran contains bioactive substances such as phenolic compounds, which can provide health benefits as natural antioxidants. This study examined how levels of phenolic acids can be obtained efficiently through various extraction methods. The extractions of defatted rice bran were followed by using ethylacetate (RBE-I), ethylacetate after alkaline hydrolysis (RBE-II), and 80% methanol (RBE-III). For all extracts, yields (%), total polyphenol contents (TPC), various phenolic acids and antioxidative activities were estimated. RBE-II had the highest total polyphenol contents (526.72 mg/100 g rice bran) and showed high antioxidative activity (74.7%). To concentrate the phenolic acids, RBE-II was passed through Sep-pak $C_{18}$ Vac cartridge and F1-RBE-II was collected by the elution of 50% methanol. The total phenolic content of F1-RBE-II (736.8 mg/100 g rice bran) was higher than that of RBE-II (367.1 mg/100 g rice bran), and the ratios of ferulic acid (73%) and sinapic acid (14%) increased. As RBE-II was analysed by HPLC, 6 different phenolic acids were found via chromatography, whereas F1-RBE-II showed 5 different peaks and the major phenolic acid was identified as ferulic acid. The ABTS radical scavenging activity of F1-RBE-II was the highest among the rice bran extracts. In a ${\beta}$-carotene-linoleic acid model system, linoleic acid oxidation was reduced by F1-RBE-II (73%) and RBE-II (35%).
Phenolic acids of white ginseng were extracted and fractionated into free, esterified, and insoluble-bound forms. The contents of individual phenolic acids in different forms were quantified by gas liquid chromatography. Nine different phenolic acids as free, esterified, and insoluble-bound forms were identified in white ginseng. Total phenolic compounds in different forms of extracts was 0.309% (free form), 0.230% (esterified form) and 0.138% (insoluble-bound form), respectively. Total phenolic acid contents in free, esterified and insoluble-bound form were 889.3, 356.8, 1,176.9 mg/100g fraction, respectively. Ferulic acid was the predominant phenolic acid, representing 63.7% and 50.9% of total phenolic acids in esterified fom and insoluble-bound form, respectively. While caffeic acid was only detected in esterified form. At 10 mg/ml insoluble-bound form quenched 95.9% ABTS free radicals generated from 2,2-azobis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (AAPH). Also, electron donating ability and lipid peroxidation inhibitory activity of insoluble-bound fom were higher than other fraction. All phenolic acid fractions scavenged over 80% of hydroxyl radical at 10 mg/ml.
The phenolic compounds of Korean sweet potatoes, Mokpo 18 and Yulmi, were extracted by using 70%-methanol and the extracts(ME) were fractionated and obtained three fractions such as free phenolic acid(FPAF), soluble phenolic acid ester(SPAF) and insoluble bound phenolic acid(BPAF) fractions. The antioxidative activities(AA) was represented as the peroxide values(POVs). The POVs were calculated by measuring the oxidation of linoleic acid and lard emulsions at $60^{\circ}C$. AA of FPAF has shown the most effective. AA of FPAF were more effective than those of ME in both Yulmi and Mokpo 18. AA of the ME of Mokpo 18 were more effective than those of Yulmi, however, those of FPAF in Ulmi were more effective than in Mokpo 18. The POVs of ME and FPAF of the peel part in both sweet potatoes were more effective than those of peeled part. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of the phenolic compounds in both sweet-potatoes were performed by using high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) and the major phenolic compounds were identified as chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid. The contents of caffeic acid were 0.684mg/g in the peel part and 0.028mg/g in the peeled part of Yulmi and 0.472mg/g in the peel part and 0.046mg/g in the peeled part of Mokpo 18 and those of chlorogenic acid was 0.674mg/g, 0.926mg/g, and 0.012mg/g, respectively. In comparative test of antioxidative activities between a standard chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid, AA of caffeic acid were more effective than those of chlorogenic acid.

This study was conducted to investigate the contents of the total phenolic compounds, and DPPH, ABTS radical scavenging activities of phenolic acid fractions of ginseng according to steaming times. Also the individual phenolic acid compositions and contents were analyzed by GC. The contents of the total phenolic compounds proportionally increased from 0.530 to 2.893% according to steaming times. Phenolic acid fractions were separated according to bound types, and the insoluble bound form fraction showed the highest contents followed by ester form fraction and free form fraction. The total contents of these three fractions (1.031-1.416%) were not significantly influenced by steaming times. Salicylic, cinamic, p-hydroxybenzoic, gentisic, vanillic, syringic, caffeic, ferolic acid were found in each fraction, and gentisic and ferolic acid were the major phenolic acid. Each phenolic acid fraction showed over 50% of DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities. There were no differences between the phenolic acid fractions according to binding types. Free radical scavenging activities were affected by a number of steaming times and augmented as steaming times increased.
Growers in plug seedling production think that root media in which rockwool is a component has given rise to several environmental problems. Therefore, the demand for new materials as a substitute for rockwool has been increased. This study examined the possibility of cultivation of tomato plug seedlings using a newly developed growing medium with phenolic foam. Plug seeds of tomato cultivar 'Madison' were sown in four pellet-type growing media: Grodan rockwool (GRW), UR rockwool (URW), phenolic foam LC (LC) or phenolic foam LC-lite (LC-lite). Then, the seedlings were transplanted to the four cube-type growing media 19 days after sowing. Seeds were germinated in a growth chamber ($25{\pm}2^{\circ}C$, 80% relative humidity, and dark) for 4 days and then the seedlings were grown with a nutrient solution supplied by an overhead irrigation system in a greenhouse. Plant height, number of leaves, leaf area, and fresh or dry weight of tomato seedlings were the greatest for the seedlings transplanted to URW cube media after being grown on LC-lite pellets. Root grade was the greatest for the seedlings transplanted on LC or LC-lite cube media after being grown on LC pellets. Chemical properties of all media tested for tomato growth were maintained within a stable range, while physical properties of URW showed high values in container capacity, air space, and total porosity. These results demonstrated that the phenolic foam media were effective for seedling growth and can substitute for rockwool as a root medium.
The phenolics of Sambucus sieboldiana var. pendula leaves for functional resources were examined on inhibitory activity against biological enzyme and anti-microbial activity. The amount of phenolic compounds were 11.60±0.18 and 12.43±0.07 mg/g by water and 50% ethanol extraction, respectively. The antioxidative activity of phenolic in extracts was higher than solids. The inhibition activities on angiotensin converting enzyme were 92.08 and 78.33% at 200 ㎍/mL phenolic concentration in water and ethanol extracts, respectively. The xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity were 100% at 200 ㎍/mL phenolic in water and ethanol extracts, respectively. These result was higher than 70.37% of allopurinol as positive control at 200 ㎍/mL. The inhibitory activity against hyaluronidase were each 25.35 and 43.38% in water and ethanol extracts. The water extract from S. sieboldiana var. pendula leaves showed antibacterial activity on the Propionebacterium acnes, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus mutans in water extract and S. mutans in ethanol extract. This result suggests that phenolic from S. sieboldiana var. pendula leaves are suitable as functional foods with anti-hypertension, anti-gout, anti-inflammation and anti-microorganism activities.
In order to verify the effect of using functional cosmetic ingredients for skin beauty, the composition and content of some phenolic acid and flavonoids in the hot water and 80% methanol extract of Akebia quinata fruit pericarp and seeds were analyzed, and the skin care antioxidant activity was investigated. The results are as follows. Total polyphenol and flavonoid contents were found to be higher in pericarp extract than seed extract in both hot water and 80% methanol extract. In the analysis of the composition and content of phenolic acid and flavonoids, two kinds of phenolic acids were identified in the hot water extract of pericarp, 6 kinds of phenolic acids were identified in the 80% methanol extract, and one kind of flavonoid. Two types of phenolic acids were identified in the hot water and 80% methanol extract of seeds, respectively. DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities tended to increase in proportion to the treatment concentration in both hot water and 80% methanol extracts, and antioxidant activity was found to be high. Therefore, from the above results, it was found that the hot water and 80% methanol extract of Akebia quinata fruit pericarp and seeds contained various kinds of phenolic acid and flavonoids, and the antioxidant activity was also high. It is believed to be of value as a natural antioxidant in skin care cosmetic ingredients.
Free phenolic acids (FPA), soluble phenolic acid esters (SPA) and insoluble-bound phenolic acids (IPA) were extracted from defatted Perillae semen flour and the antioxidative components in FPA extract was separated by column chromatography and HPLC. Total phenolic content of defatted Perillae semen flour was 0.38% as chlorogenic acid and each percent ratio of the content of FPA, SPA and IPA to total phenolic content was 71.1%, 15.8% and 13.1%, respectively. The antioxidative activity was compared by measuring of electron donating ability (EDA) and thiobarbituric acid value (linoleic acid substrates). The FPA extract was showed the highest antioxidative activity among the three kinds of phenolic extracts. The FPA extract showing the highest antioxidative activity was separated by silica gel column chromatography and then the separated fractions were compared in terms of antioxidative activity. The fractions of acetone : methanol (8 : 2) showing the highest antioxidative activity was further separated by HPLC. Five fractions (F-I, F-II, F-III, F-IV and F-V) were observed on the HPLC chromatogram and F-I fraction showed the highest antioxidative activity.
The phenolic compounds contained in milled barley grains were seperated and identified by gas liquid chromatography and the effects of phenolic compounds extracted from milled barley grains and each authentic phenolic compound on the growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were studied. Severn phenolic acids, namely cinnamic, protocatechuic, ferulic, sinapid, vanillic, syringic, gallic acids, were identified in milled barley grains by gas liquid chromatography. The contents of sinapic, ferulic, cinnamic, protocatechuic acids were larger than those of vanillic and gallic acids. Phenolic compounds, extracted from milled barley grains and supplemented in culture broth, were inhibitory to the growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae at levels above 100ppm to 24 hours but not inhibitory at all levels after 48 hours. Cinnamic, ferulic, vanillic acids at all levels were inhibitory to the growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, among them cinnamic acid was most inhibitory. Syringic acid was inhibitory to the growth of the yeast at the initial stage of culture. But sinapic and protocatechuic acids were slightly stimulatory to the growth of the yeast and gallic acid was ineffective to the growth of the yeast.
This study was performed to determine the composition of phenolic substances contained in the leaves of Cirsium setidens (Compositae), validate the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method, and determine the in vivo sedative effect of the main component pectolinarin. Six phenolic compounds isolated from C. setidens were spectroscopically identified as chlorogenic acid (1), hyperoside (2), 3,4-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (3), caffeic acid methyl ester (4), linarin (5), and pectolinarin (6) and then used as standard compounds for HPLC analysis. HPLC proved to be precise, accurate, and sensitive for the simultaneous analysis of the phenolic substances. In particular, six compounds showed good regression ($R^2$ > 0.999) within test ranges and recovery was in the range of 95.4 - 104.8%. The content of pectolinarin was considerably higher (156.48 mg/g) than those of other phenolic substances including the other flavone glycoside, linarin (18.99 mg/g). The contents of other phenolic substances, in order, were chlorogenic acid (8.41 mg/g), 3,4-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (5.74 mg/g), hyperoside (4.33 mg/g), and caffeic acid methyl ester (0.51 mg/g). Oral administration with compound 6 (10 and 20 mg/kg) enhanced the sleeping time induced by pentobarbital in mice, indicating that it has a sedative effect.
