Typically, a wedge is involved to generate effectively high inspection angle in pipe weld inspection using phased array ultrasonic technique. But the usage of this wedge for weld or access limited area can cause coverage limitation for the examination volume because of the wedge front length. Therefore, the shear wave phased array probe which can generate high inspection angle without wedge is essentially necessary. In this paper, the shear wave phased array ultrasonic probe which can generate high inspection angle designed by modeling and manufactured from the modelling result. And this shear wave probe tested whether it can detect and sizing for EDM test block that contains various depth. As results, the experimental results show that the designed shear wave phased array probe can detect and size with reliable accuracy. Therefore if this phased array probe apply in field inspection, it is expected that it show more reliable inspection result for plant structure having access limitation.

An ultrasonic magnetostrictive transducer-based phased-array system for imaging defects in plate structures is newly proposed. In that most ultrasonic phased array systems rely on piezoelectric transducers or electromagnetic acoustic transducers, this system has its own unique feature of employing magnetostrictive transducers. Interest in using a phased array system using magnetostrictive transducers has been recently reported for pipe inspection but no such system has been developed for plate inspection. In this investigation, we aim to propose a phased array system using OL-MPTs (Omnidirectional Lamb wave Magnetostrictive Patch Transducers) for plate inspection. The developed system consists of a multi-channel function generator, power amplifiers, preamplifiers and a data acquisition unit. In the process of its development, each of the units must be checked and in doing so, we suggest types of ultrasonic wave experiments that should be carried out. Finally, the phased system using a transducer array composed of eight OL-MPTs is newly configured and is applied for actual crack detection experiments.

In this paper, a stabilizd system operation through a composition of a protective circuit and an improvement of active reflection coefficient(ARC) is studied. Unlike the passive-phased array antenna, the APPA is a combined form of radiating element and transmitter-reciever module. Therefore, a definition of new ARC that differentiates itself from typical passive-phased array antenna must apply. The ARC is a reflection coefficient considering a superposition of a coupling from nearby radiating elements and self reflection. It is an important parameter that predicts and analyzes charateristics of a APPR system. A high level ARC is a direct source inducing a performance degradation of a system. In this paper, as a method for a stabilized operation of APAR, one method for improving a performance and another for degradation prevention are analyzed. An effectiveness of two methods was validated using experiment results of real-fabricated active-phased array antenna.

A phased array is a multi-element piezoelectric device whose elements are individually excited by electric pulses at programmed delay time. One of the advantages of using phased array in nondestructive evaluation (NDE) application over conventional ultrasonic transducers is their great maneuverability of ultrasonic beam. There are some parameters such as the number and the size of the piezoelectric elements and the inter-element spacing of the elements to design phased array transducer. In this study, the characteristic of ultrasonic beam for phased array transducer due to the variation of the number of elements has been simulated for ultrasonic SH-wave on the basis of Huygen's principle. Ultrasonic beam directivity and focusing due to the change of time delay of each element were discussed due to the change of the number of piezoelectric elements. It was found that ultrasonic beam was much more spreaded and hence its sound pressure was decreased as steering angle of ultrasonic beam was increased. In addition, the ability of ultrasonic bean focusing decreased gradually with the increase of focal length at the same piezoelectric elements. However, the ability of beam focusing was improved as the number of consisting elements was increased.

A new phased-array quadrature RF coil for one or two RF acquisition channels is developed for spine MR imaging. Quadrature RF coils for MRI have been useful to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by $"\sqrt{2}"$ using two orthogonal RF coils in combination [1]. More recently, the phased-array RF coil has been proposed for more improvement of SNR by using an array of RF coil elements with a reduced size and coverage for each element. Two new schemes are proposed for the new phased-array quadrature RF coil as follows : (1) Proper overlapping of two quadrature RF coils thus removing the mutual inductance and (2) Attaching preamplifiers right after the coil section and combining the signal with proper phase delays. The coil has been implemented for receive- only mode. It has been tested through phantom and volunteer imaging. The experimental results show the utility of the proposed RF coil.
The near-field subwavelength squint-less focusing system of a phased array antenna is designed and demonstrated by numerical simulation. The Huygens-Fresnel principle is applied to numerical simulation for calculation of the phased array antenna at microwave frequency. It was shown that beam squinting can be eliminated, utilizing true-time optical delay lines based on a chirped fiber grating in the proposed system. Furthermore, subwavelength focusing with high numerical aperture can be achieved by considering the fact that the array elements of the phased-array antenna can be treated as diffractive elements in an optical lens system. Also, side lobes can be suppressed by decreasing the distance between element antennas to less than half of the wavelength.
In this paper, a high-speed calibration method for phased array antennas in the far-field is presented A max calibration, which is a simplification of the rotating-element electric-field vector (REV) method that calibrates each antenna element only through received power, and a method of grouping calibrations by sub-array unit rather than each antenna element were proposed. Using the Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) algorithm, we found a partitioning optimized for the distribution of phased array antennas and calibrated it on a subarray basis. An adaptive max calibration method that allows faster calibration than the conventional method was proposed and verified through simulation. Not only is the gain of the phased array antenna higher while calibration is being made to the target, but the beam pattern is closer to the ideal beam pattern than the conventional method.
In this paper, an additional degree of freedom in phased multi-input multi-output (phased-MIMO) radar with any arbitrary desired covariance matrix is proposed using space-time codes. By using the proposed method, any desired transmit covariance matrix in MIMO radar (phased-MIMO radars) can be realized by employing fully correlated base waveforms such as phased-array radars and simply extending them to different time slots with predesigned phases and amplitudes. In the proposed method, the transmit covariance matrix depends on the base waveform and space-time codes. For simplicity, a base waveform can be selected arbitrarily (ie, all base waveforms can be fully correlated, similar to phased-array radars). Therefore, any desired covariance matrix can be achieved by using a very simple phased-array structure and space-time code in the transmitter. The main advantage of the proposed scheme is that it does not require diverse uncorrelated waveforms. This considerably reduces transmitter hardware and software complexity and cost. One the receiver side, multiple signals can be analyzed jointly in the time and space domains to improve the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio.

The phased array transducer has two distinct advantages. One is rapid scanning comparing with the conventional mechanical or manual scanning system. Therefore, output image is represented in real-time. The other is the dynamic focusing and the dynamic steering of ultrasonic beam. Only the delay times that are controlled electrically are used to focus and to steer beam without any lenses or wedges. In this study, the profile of the ultrasonic beam for the phased array transducer has been simulated in the Huygens principle with varying the inter-element spacing of the linear phased array transducer. From the result of this study, it was found that the ultrasonic beam spread wider as the inter-element spacing was decreased. However, the focusing effect was improved, even when the number of the element was not big. In addition, there was grating lobes that are constructed when the inter-element spacing is more than half wavelength. However, this grating lobe has lower amplitude than the main lobe.

A radiating elements fault diagnosis method with simplified radiation pattern measurement procedure was presented for planar active phased array antenna system. For presenting the mentioned method, the technique for linear approximation based on the radiation characteristics of a planar array configuration and a technique for solving a unique solution problem that occur in process of diagnosing a fault in a radiating elements were presented. Based on the presented method and a genetic algorithm, experimental simulations were performed for radiating element defect diagnosis according to various planar active phased array antenna configurations. As a result, it was confirmed that the presented radiating element fault diagnosis method can be smoothly applied to planar active phased antennas having various configurations.
