  • The effect of dispersed phase on the stability of emulsion system with polyoxyethylene dodecyl ethers and their variation of ethylene oxide moles was studied by such methods as interfacial tension measurement, centrifugation and droplet size variation with time. The experiments showed that, in interfacial tension measurement, long chain alkanols into dispersed phaes are more effectively adsorbed onto interface, while long chain alkanes nearly not, and in centrifugation, dispersed phase with alkanols is less separated than that with alkanes. On the other hand, alkanes help more stabilyzing emulsion than alkanols in droplet size variation. And the addition of NaCl or Urea, and variation of E.O. moles have very slight effects on the stability with alkanes than with alkanols. Moreover, the longer carbon chain length is, dispersed phase is more effective on emulsion stability. Supposed from these facts is that more stable emulsion can be made with alkanes which retard molecular diffusion by water solubility decrease rather than alkanols which raise resistance to coalescence by rigid interfacial mixed monolayers formation. In conclusion, the stabilities of these emulsions are proved to be more influenced by molecular diffusion than coalescence.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of functional ankle instability (FAI) and surgical treatment (ST) on postural stability and leg stiffness during vertical-drop landing. Method: A total of 21 men participated in this study (normal [NOR]: 7, FAI: 7, ST: 7). We estimated dimensionless leg stiffness as the ratio of the peak vertical ground reaction force and the change in stance-phase leg length. Leg length was calculated as the distance from the center of the pelvis to the center of pressure under the foot. Furthermore, the analyzed variables included the loading rate and the dynamic postural stability index (DPSI; medial-lateral [ML], anterior-posterior [AP], and vertical [V]) in the initial contact phase. Results: The dimensionless leg stiffness in the FAI group was higher than that of the NOR group and the ST group (p = .018). This result may be due to a smaller change in stance-phase leg length (p = .001). DPSI (ML, AP, and V) and loading rate did not show differences according to the types of ankle instability during drop landing (p > .05). Conclusion: This study suggested that the dimensionless leg stiffness was within the normal range in the ST group, whereas it was increased by the stiffness of the legs rather than the peak vertical force during vertical-drop landing in the FAI group. Identifying these potential differences may enable clinicians to assess ankle instability and design rehabilitation protocols specific for the impairment.

  • Through the development of phasor measurement units (PMU), various aspects of power system dynamic behavior could be monitored and diagnosed. Monitoring dynamic voltage stability has become one of the achievements we can obtain from PMUs. It is very important to select the most appropriate method for the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) system since there are many voltage stability indices. In this paper, we propose an advanced WAVI (Wide Area Voltage Stability) that is well suited for the purposes of monitoring the dynamic voltage stability of KEPCO's PMU installation plan. The salient features of the proposed index are: i) it uses only PMU measurements without coupling with EMS data; ii) it is computationally unburdened and can be applied to real-time situations. The proposed index is applied to the KEPCO test system and the results show that it successfully predicts voltage instability through comparative studies.

  • As a synthetic analog of the naturally occurring hormone somatostatin, octreotide has been commercially formulated in poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) microspheres for the treatment of acromegaly. The purpose of this study was to evaluate stability of octreotide acetate in aqueous solutions at various pH values and PLGA films. Stability-indicating reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic method was developed with good precision and accuracy, and it was applied to the stability studies. In aqueous solutions at pH 2.5-9.0, the degradation of octreotide followed approximately first order kinetics and the most favorable stability was found at pH 4. In PLGA films, the formation of acylated octreotides reached approximately 55% of the released octreotides. Various acylated octreotides was structurally identified by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometric analysis.

  • PURPOSE: Aging causes changes in the postural alignment and gait due to changes in the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. On the other hand, the relationship between the changes in posture alignment and gait is unclear. This study examined the relationship between the postural alignment and spatiotemporal gait parameters in Korean elderly women. METHODS: Thirty-two-healthy elderly women participated in this study. All subjects were assessed for their posture alignment and gait ability. Stepwise multiple linear regression was performed to determine to what extent the postural alignments could explain the spatiotemporal gait parameters. RESULTS: Coronal head angle was moderately correlated with the velocity (r = -.51), normalized velocity (r = -.46) and gait-stability ratio (r = .58) (p < .05). The trunk angle was moderately correlated with the normalized velocity (r = -.32) and gait-stability ratio (r = .32) and weakly correlated with the velocity (r = -.28) (p < .05). The coronal shoulder angle was moderately correlated with the swing phase (r = -.57), stance phase (r = .56), single limb stance (r = -.56) and double limb stance (r = .51) (p < .05). The coronal head angle and trunk angle accounted for 36% of the variance in velocity, 33% variance in normalized velocity and 46% variance in the gait-stability ratio (p < .05). The coronal shoulder angle accounted for 32% variance in the swing phase, 32% variance in the stance phase, 31% variance in the single limb stance and 26% variance in the double limb stance (p < .05). CONCLUSION: Changes in posture alignment in elderly women may serve as a biomarker to predict a decrease in walking ability due to physical aging.

  • The effect of morphological development in PET/PEN blending on the physical properties of PET/PEN blend film as a flexible substrate was investigated. The two phase morphology was obtained in PET/PEN blends and it caused the improvement of dimensional stability of PET/PEN blend as a flexible substrate. The two phase morphology and crystallinity of PET/PEN blends could be controlled by the transesterification between PET and PEN during the film processing and this macroscopic structural development affected the dimensional stability of PET/PEN blend films. Better dimensional stability was obtained with increasing crystallinity and decreasing the level of transesterification.

  • Al2O3 has excellent sintering properties and is important in semiconductor manufacturing processes that require high-temperature resistance and chemical inertness in a plasma environment. In this study, a comprehensive analysis of the chemical characteristics, physical properties, crystal structure, and dispersion stability of three commercially available Al2O3 powders was conducted. The aim was to provide a technological foundation for selecting and utilizing appropriate Al2O3 powders in practical applications. All powders exhibited α-Al2O3 as the main phase, with the presence of beta-phase Na2O-11Al2O3 as the secondary phase. The highest Na+ ion leaching was observed in the aqueous slurry state due to the presence of the secondary phase. Although the average particle size difference among the three powders was not significant, distinct differences in particle size distribution were observed. ALG-1SH showed a broad particle size distribution, P162 exhibited a bimodal distribution, and AES-11 displayed a uniform unimodal distribution. High-concentration Al2O3 slurries showed differences in viscosity due to ion release when no dispersant was added, affecting the electrical double-layer thickness. Polycarboxylate was found to effectively enhance the dispersion stability of all three powders. In the dispersion stability analysis, ALG-1SH exhibited the slowest sedimentation tendency, as evidenced by the low TSI value, while P162 showed faster precipitation, influenced by the particle size distribution.

  • Organogels are semi-solid systems that consist of an apolar solvent as the liquid phase within a three-dimensional networked structure. In this study, we developed a stable and skin penetration-enhanced Lecithin Organogel (LO) containing genistein, which is one of the poorly soluble active ingredients in both polar and apolar phase. After screening of various components (type of gelators, organic and aqueous phase), hydrogenated lecithin (HL), sunflower oil (SO), dipropylene glycol (DPG), and polyethylene glycol (PEG) were mainly used in this formulation. Phase ternary diagram was employed for optimization of the composition in the LO. The formulated LO were evaluated for its organoleptic characteristics, stability, pH, rheology, phase transition temperatures, microscopic analysis and skin penetration. The optimized stable LO system can be utilized as an effective and stable cosmetic formulation that can carry poorly soluble active ingredients at high concentration for topical dermal delivery.

  • This paper, we propose a new phase-locked loop (PLL) system with the controllable output phase, independent from the output frequency, and lock-up time. This PLL system has a dual control loop is described, the inner loop greatly improved VCO characteristic such as faster speed response as well as higher operation bandwidth, to minimize the effect of the VCO noise and the power supply variation and also get better linearity of VCO output. The main loop is the heart of this PLL which greatly improved the output frequency instability due to the external high frequency noise coupling to the input reference frequency also the main loop can control the output phase, independent from the output frequency, and reduce the lock-up time of the step frequency response. The experimental results confirm the validity of the proposed strategy.
