A major advantage of wavefront reconstruction based on a series of diffracted intensity images using only single-beam illumination is the simplicity of setup. Here we propose a fast-converging algorithm for wavefront calculation using single-beam illumination. The captured intensity images are resampled to a series of intensity images, ranging from highest to lowest resampling; each resampled image has half the number of pixels as the previous one. Phase calculation at a lower resolution is used as the initial solution phase at a higher resolution. This corresponds to separately calculating the phase for the lower- and higher-frequency components. Iterations on the low-frequency components do not need to be performed on the higher-frequency components, thus making the convergence of the phase retrieval faster than with the conventional method. The principle is verified by both simulation and optical experiments.
A Second Harmonic Generation Frequency Resolved Optical Gating(SHG FROG) system was developed. Its performance test shows that it is capable of accurately measuring the temporal evolution of the electric field, both amplitude and phase, of femtosecond light pulses. For the retrieval of the temporal evolution of light pulses from their spectrograms obtained by using the FROG system, Principal Components Generalized Projection(PCGP) algorithm is used and in addition we used additional constraints of second-harmonic spectrum, marginals in frequency and time-delay of the spectrogram. Such modification of the software brings about significant improvement in speed and stability of the pulse retrieval process.
In this paper, we consider a method for estimating a stripe-type defect and the reconstruction of a defect-free L/S type mask used in lithography. Comparing diffraction patterns of defected and defect-free masks, we derive equations for the estimation of the location and size of the defect. We construct an analytical model for this problem and derive closed form equations to determine the location and size using phase retrieval problem solving techniques. Consequently, we develop an algorithm that determines a defect-free mask pattern. An example shows the validity of the equations.
In this paper, we present a novel approach for contents-based medication image retrieval from a medication image database using the shape classification and color information of the medication. One major problem in developing a contents-based drug image retrieval system is there are too many similar images in shape and color and it makes difficult to identify any specific medication by a single feature of the drug image. To resolve such difficulty in identifying images, we propose a hybrid approach to retrieve a medication image based on shape and color features of the medication. In the first phase of the proposed method we classify the medications by shape of the images. In the second phase, we identify them by color matching between a query image and preclassified images in the first phase. For the shape classification, the shape signature, which is unique shape descriptor of the medication, is extracted from the boundary of the medication. Once images are classified by the shape signature, Hue and Saturation(HS) color model is used to retrieve a most similarly matched medication image from the classified database images with the query image. The proposed system is designed and developed especially for specific population- seniors to browse medication images by using visual information of the medication in a feasible fashion. The experiment shows the proposed automatic image retrieval system is reliable and convenient to identify the medication images.
Radio occultation (RO) has been used in the planetary science since Microlab-1 was launched in 1995. With the RO technique, the profiles of atmosphere and the global atmospheric data can be obtained. In 2006, Taiwan launched six low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites as the RO constellation mission, known as FORMOSAT-3. In order to retrieve the RO data from original data, a retrieval algorithm, NCURO, is developed. The input of NCURO algorithm is mainly the excess phase of GPS signal, and the output is the dry pressure and dry temperature. Using temperature profiles retrieved by NCURO algorithm, temperature perturbation and potential energy of gravity wave have been evaluated. In this paper, the retrieval algorithm and the global distribution of energy of gravity waves are described and demonstrated.

In this study, a design-supporting system, which is intended to assist engineers in the schematic phase of the structural design, is developed using a case database that contains design information of tall buildings in Korea. A case-based reasoning method utilizing the case database is proposed. The inductive retrieval module for selecting structural system, in the initial stage, from the design information of case database for 47 tall buildings is presented. Also, the nearest-neighbor retrieval method for selecting similar design cases is introduced.
Differential phase contrast (DPC) microscopy, a central quantitative phase imaging (QPI) technique in cell biology, facilitates label-free, real-time monitoring of intrinsic optical phase variations in biological samples. The existing DPC imaging theory, while important for QPI, is grounded in paraxial diffraction theory. However, this theory lacks accuracy when applied to high numerical aperture (NA) systems that are vital for high-resolution cellular studies. To tackle this limitation, we have, for the first time, formulated a nonparaxial DPC imaging equation with a transmission cross-coefficient (TCC) for high NA DPC microscopy. Our theoretical framework incorporates the apodization of the high NA objective lens, nonparaxial light propagation, and the angular distribution of source intensity or detector sensitivity. Thus, our TCC model deviates significantly from traditional paraxial TCCs, influenced by both NA and the angular variation of illumination or detection. Our nonparaxial imaging theory could enhance phase retrieval accuracy in QPI based on high NA DPC imaging.

An image retrieval system based on image content is a key issue for building and managing large multimedia database, such as art galleries and museums, trademarks and copyrights, and picture archiving and communication system. Therefore, the interest on the subject of content-based image retrieval has been greatly increased for the last few years. This paper proposes a feature-based image retrieval technique which uses a compound feature vector representing both of color and shape of an image. Color information for the feature vector is obtained using the algebraic moment of each pixel of an image based on the property of regional color distribution. Shape information for the feature vector is obtained using the Improved Moment Invariant(IMI) which reduces the quantity of computation and increases retrieval efficiency. In the preprocessing phase for extracting shape feature, we transform a color image into a gray image. Since we make use of the modified DCT algorithm, it is implemented easily and can extract contour in real time. As an experiment, we have compared our method with previous methods using a database consisting of 150 automobile images, and the results of the experiment have shown that our method has the better performance on retrieval effectiveness.
For an emotion retrieval system implementation to support pedestrian navigation, coordinating the pedestrian emotion model with the system user's emotion is considered a key component. This study proposes a new method for capturing the user's model that corresponds to the pedestrian emotion model and examines the validity of the method. In the first phase, a database comprising a set of interior images that represent hypothetical destinations was developed. In the second phase, 10 subjects were recruited and asked to evaluate on navigation and satisfaction toward each interior image in five rounds of navigation experiments. In the last phase, the subjects' feedback data was used for of the pedestrian emotion model, which is called ‘learning' in this study. After evaluations by the subjects, the learning effect was analyzed by the following aspects: recall ratio, precision ratio, retrieval ranking, and satisfaction. Findings of the analysis verify that all four aspects significantly were improved after the learning. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of the learning algorithm for the proposed pedestrian emotion model. Furthermore, this study demonstrates the potential of such pedestrian emotion model to be well applicable in the development of various mobile contents service systems dealing with visual images such as commercial interiors in the future.
In this paper, we present a hybrid approach which incorporates color, texture and shape in content-based image retrieval. Colors in each image are clustered into a small number of representative colors. The feature descriptor consists of the representative colors and their percentages in the image. A similarity measure similar to the cumulative color histogram distance measure is defined for this descriptor. The co-occurrence matrix as a statistical method is used for texture analysis. An optimal set of five statistical functions are extracted from the co-occurrence matrix of each image, in order to render the feature vector for eachimage maximally informative. The edge information captured within edge histograms is extracted after a pre-processing phase that performs color transformation, quantization, and filtering. The features where thus extracted and stored within feature vectors and were later compared with an intersection-based method. The content-based retrieval system is tested to be effective in terms of retrieval and scalability through experimental results and precision-recall analysis.
