  • It is shown that the inversion of the undamped Bloch equation for an amplitude-modulated broadband π/2 pulse can be precisely treated as an inverse scattering problem for a Schrodinger equation on the positive semiaxis. The pulse envelope is closely related to the central potential and asymptotically the wave function takes the form of a regular solution of the radial Schrodinger equation for s-wave scattering. An integral equation, which allows the calculation of the pulse amplitude (the potential) from the phase shift of the asymptotic solution, is derived. An exact analytical inversion of the integral equation shows that the detuning-independent π/2 pulse amplitude is given by a delta function. The equation also provides a means to calculate numerically approximate π/2 pulses for broadband excitation.

  • A two-dimensional finite difference numerical model was developed in order to simulate two-phase fluid flow in a single fracture. In the model, variation of viscosity with pressure and that of relative permeability with water saturation can be treated. For the numerical solution, IMPES method was used, from which the pressure and the saturation of water and gas were computed one by one. Seven cases of model test using parallel plates for a single fracture were performed in order to obtain the characteristic equation of relative permeability which would be used in the numerical model. it was difficult to match the characteristic curves of relative permeability from the model tests with the existing emperical equations, consequently a logistic equation was proposed. As the equation is composed of the parameters involving aperture size, it can be applied to any fracture.

  • For high performance and structural stability, application of high strength steel has continuously increased. However, the change of the base metal gives rise to problems with the accuracy management of the welded structure. It is attributed to the martensite phase transformation of the high strength low alloy steel weldment. The purpose of this study is to establish the predictive equation of transverse shrinkage and residual stress for the HY-100 weldment. In order to do it, high speed quenching dilatometer tests were performed to define a coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE) at the heating and cooling stage of HY-100 with various cooling rates. Uncoupled thermal-mechanical finite element(FE) models with CTE were proposed to evaluate the effect of the martensite phase transformation on transverse shrinkage and residual stresses at the weldment. FEA results were verified by comparing with experimental results. Based on the results of extensive FEA and experiments, the predictive equation of transverse shrinkage and longitudinal shrinkage force at the HY-100 weldment were formulated as the function of welding heat input/in-plane rigidity and welding heat input respectively.

  • This paper describes an effort to develop a microcomputer-based parameter identification system for three phase and two phase brushless DC motor. Back EMF equation is derived from back EMF waveform of three phase and two phase brushless DC motor. In this paper, a new identification algorithm for the brushless DC motor parameters by Pasek's technique is de veloped. It is found that Pasek's equation is valid for the brushless DC motor, too. The results obtained clearly shows that it is possible to implement the identification system for the determination of the brushless DC motor parameters. To minimize errors due to the ripple component in the measured armature current, dlgital averaging filter is employed. The whole identification process of signal generation, measuring, parameter determination is fully automated. The use of the pmpased method in the parameter identification system shows that the averaged current curve is in excellent agreement with the estimated current curve. Therefore, this close agreement conf i i the validity of this technique.

  • To investigate the relationships between the atmospheric concentrations of PCBs and temperature, quantity of both parameters was performed at an urban site in Korea from July 1999 to January 2000. The strength of correlations between total PCB and temperature was found to be significant (r = 0.752, p < 0.001). It hence indicates that total PCB contents were affected sensitively by temperature change during the sampling period. The ratio of PCB homologs and Deca-CB(PCB 209) also behaved quite similarly to the change of temperature (r>0.60, p<0.05). This may be inferable with the progress of the gas/particle partitioning to the gas phase, especially for fri-and tetra-CBs. Because they have high vapor pressure, they generally exist in the gas phase. The Clausius-Clapeyron equation was applied to the atmospheric PCB data, relating PCB partial vapor pressure to inverse temperature. This may essentially represent the temperature-controlled transition between condensed phase and atmospheric gas phase. The slopes of the resulting plot with International Council for the Explanation of the Seas (ICES) congener ranged from -2810 to -5887, with significantly steep slope and $R^2$(p< 0.005) It was inferred that the PCB atmospheric concentration was also affected by change in the surrounding conditions such as soil, lakes and trees.

  • Two-dimensional solidification analysis during rheology forming process of semi-solid aluminum alloy has been studied. Two-phase fluid flow model to investigate the velocity field and temperature distribution is proposed. The proposed mathematical model is applied to the die shape of the two types. To calculate the velocity and temperature fields during rheology forming process, the earth governing equation correspondent to the liquid and solid region are adapted. Therefore, each numerical models considering the solid and liquid region existing within the semi-solid material have been developed to predict the deflect of rheology forming gnarls. The Arbitrary Boundary Maker And Cell (ABMAC) method is employed to solve the two-phase flow model of the Navier-Stokes equation. Theoretical model on the basis of the two-phase flow model is the mixture rule of solid and liquid phases. This approach is based on the liquid and solid viscosity. The liquid viscosity is pure liquid state value, however solid viscosity is considered as a function of the shear rate, solid fraction and power law curves.

  • In most engineering applications related with the heat conduction phenomena, a conventional Fourier heat conduction equation has been successfully applied and it has supplied quite reasonable results. However, it is well known that the Fourier heat conduction equation is failed in the application to the extremely small space and short time, in other words, a nano-scale system and a pico-second time. In this study, non-Fourier effect was evaluated in the heat conduction by considering the concept of a phase lag model. The results show the existence of a heat wave, which means that the heat is transferred with a finite speed while an infinite speed of heat transfer is assumed in the conventional Fourier heat conduction. In addition, the copper and the gold are tested to evaluate the phase lag time between the heat flux and the temperature gradient. The results show that the gold has the heat wave speed faster than that of the copper consistent with the prediction based on an actual experiment.

  • The crystal growth and dissolution rates were calculated by solving a model equation, which involved the dissolution of the metastable phase($\beta$-HNIW) and growth of the stable phase($\varepsilon$-HNIW), together with the mass balance equation. The model has been successfully used to simulate available kinetic data for the $\beta$$\longrightarrow$$\varepsilon$ polymorphic transformation via a solution phase. From the effectiveness factor based on the two-step model, it was found that the surface integration contribution to the process was comparatively small, and a diffusion dependency decreased with an increase of the mass fraction of chloroform in the mixed solvents of ethyl acetate and chloroform. Appling these kinetics in process simulation allowed for the prediction of the product size of $\varepsilon$-HNIW.
