In this study, experimental investigations to find cold energy storage performance have been made for two different temperatures at condenser. Temperatures at inlet and outlet of condenser were measured to calculate global heat transfer coefficient of direct contact method in our cold energy storage system. Also storage performance by direct contact method was compared with that of Ice-On-Coil type ice storage which was calculated by analytic solution. Results show that, in the case of $-8.0^{\circ}C$ at condenser inlet, heat transfer coefficient of direct contact method is 3.25 times higher than that of conventional method and COP of system is improved by using R141b as refrigerant which produces gas hydrate and has higher phase change temperature than $0.0^{\circ}C$.
An analysis is performed to investigate the influence of the buoyancy force and the thickness variation of melting layer in the containment that is filled with phase-change Material surrounding a cylindrical heating tube during melting process. The phase-change material is assumed to be initially solid at its phase-change temperature and the remaining solid at any given time is still at the phase-change temperature and neglecting the effect of heat transfer occuring within the solid. At the start of melting process, the thickness of melting layer is assumed to be a stefan-problem and after the starting process, the change of temperature and velocity is calculated using a two dimensional finite difference method. The governing equations for velocity and temperature are solved by a finite difference method which used SIMPLE (Semi Implicit Method Pressure linked Equations) algorithm. Results are presented for a wide range of Granshof number and in accordance with the time increment and it is founded that two dimensional fluid flow occurred by natural convection decreases the velocity of melting process at the bottom of container. The larger the radius of heating tube, the higher heat transfer is occurred in the melting layer.
The present study is concerned with the extension of the Effective Convectivity Model (ECM) to the phase-change problem to simulate the dynamics of the melt pool formation in a Light Water Reactor (LWR) lower plenum during hypothetical severe accident progression. The ECM uses heat transfer characteristic velocities to describe turbulent natural convection of a melt pool. The simple approach of the ECM method allows implementing different models of the characteristic velocity in a mushy zone for non-eutectic mixtures. The Phase-change ECM (PECM) was examined using three models of the characteristic velocities in a mushy zone and its performance was compared. The PECM was validated using a dual-tier approach, namely validations against existing experimental data (the SIMECO experiment) and validations against results obtained from Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. The results predicted by the PECM implementing the linear dependency of mushy-zone characteristic velocity on fluid fraction are well agreed with the experimental correlation and CFD simulation results. The PECM was applied to simulation of melt pool formation heat transfer in a Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) and Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) lower plenum. The study suggests that the PECM is an adequate and effective tool to compute the dynamics of core melt pool formation.

This paper focuses on the investigation of the heat transfer phenomena that occur inside the cylindrical tube. The inclination of the tube is adopted as a principal parameter varying from vertical to horizontal. The phase change material employed in this experiment is 99 percent pure n-docosane paraffin($C_{22}$$H_{46}$). It is found that the amount of solidified mass during a prescribed solidifying period is not sensitive to the inclination of the tube but to the local layer thickness. It is studied that the latent energy is the largest contributor to the total extracted energy. The sensible energy($E_{s1}$, $E_{s2}$, $E_{s3}$) may not be negligible at the large wall-subcooling and initial-liquid-superheating, also at the first step of solidifying.

Experimental and numerical analysis were performed to investigate the heat transfer phenomena during phase change. N-octadecane were used as a phase change material and TRUMP computer code was used as a numerical tool. Also, two quarter segment of cylinder shape was chosen as a vessel to simulate to this research. The major contribution factor on the solidus surface movement was environmental temperature and the effect of roller gap and material initial temperature were insignificant. Experimental and numerical results were generally in good agreement and the effect of the mesh size ($22{\times}22$ and $33{\times}33$) was negligible.
Experiments were performed to study solidification of phase change material on a finned vertical tube when either conduction In the solid or natural convection in a liquid controls the heat transfer. The liquid was housed in a cylindrical containment vessel whose surface was maintained at a uniform, time-invariment temperature during a data run, and the solidification occurred at a finned and unfinned vertical tube positioned along the axis of the vassel. The phase change material(PCM) employed in this experiment is 99 percent pure n-Octacosan paraffin($C -{28}H_{58}/$). For conduction-controlled and convection-controlled solidification, the enhancement of the solidified mass rate due to finning is great when the solidified layer is thin and decreases as the layer grows thicker. It is studied that the latent energy($E_{\lambda}$) is the largest contributor to the total extracted energy($E_{\lambda} + E_{sl}+E_{s2}$) and the total extracted energy rate at a finned vertical tube is greater than that at a unfinned vertical tube.

Presented are heat data which describe the effect of interaction between bulk flow pulsations and a vortex embedded in a turbulent boundary layer. The pulsation frequencies are 3 Hz, 15 Hz and 30 Hz. A half delta wing with the same height as the boundary layer thickness is used to generate the vortex flow. The convection heat transfer coefficients on a constant heat-flux surface are measured by embedded 77 T-type thermocouples. Spanwise profiles of convection heat transfer coefficients show that upwash region of vortex flow is influenced by bulk flow pulsations. The local heat transfer coefficient increases approximately by 7 percent. The increase in the local change of convection heat transfer coefficient is attributed to the spanwise oscillatory motion of vortex flow especially at the low Strouhal number and to the periodic change of vortex size.
This study reports on the modeling and simulation of heat transfer in packaging boxes used for vaccine shipping. Both water and n-tetradecane are used as primary insulation materials inside a multi-slab system. The one-dimensional model, which is a spherical model using a radius equivalent to the rectangular geometry of container, is applied in this study. N-tetradecane with low thermal diffusivity and proper phase transition temperature exhibits higher heat transfer resistance during both heating and cooling processes compared to water. Thus, n-tetradecane is a better candidate as an insulating material for packaging containers for vaccine shipping. Furthermore, the developed method can also become a rapid and economic tool for screening appropriate phase change materials used as insulation materials with suitable properties in logistics applications.

A numerical investigation of the constrained melting of phase change materials within spherical-like capsule is presented. A single-domain enthalpy formulation is used for simulation of the phase change phenomenon. The solution methodology is verified with the melting process inside an isothermal spherical capsule. Especially, the effect of capsule shape on the heat storage is emphasized. Two shape parameters are considered from the real capsule shape showing good characteristics of heat storage and the effect of these parameters is examined. Early during the melting process, the conduction mode of heat transfer is dominant. Thus the capsule shape with large surface area is desirable. However, the capsule shape with large surface area plays negative role on the strength of buoyancy-driven convection that becomes more important as melting continues.

An analysis method to predict performance of a vehicle cooling system which is composed of radiator, A/C condenser, cooling fan, and etc. is suggested. Air flow through the heat exchanger system and heat rejection rate which dominate the cooling performance are analyzed. Heat transfer with A/C refrigerant phase change is also considered in the analysis. Some predicted results are compared with experimental data for various operating conditions. This evaluation procedure will be useful for the design of optimal vehicle cooling system.
