  • Surimi sol and gel were prepared by mixing egg albumin, starch, oil and carrageenan, which are used as representative ingredients in the surimi composite, at different ratio. Structural properties in surimi composite were investigated by examining the phase changes and dispersion pattern (average particle size, size range and the averge number of particle) of the particulate ingredients in sol and gel with an image analyzer. A staining technique of the specimen containing egg albumin in surimi gel was developed by adjusting pH of a toluidine staining solution. Image analysis revealed that size and density of ingredient particles were function of the level and dispersion of ingredients except of starch-incorporated surimi gel which showed maximum particle size at 6%.

  • The effects of various additives on the microstructures of sintered ZnO varistors were examined. Bi2O3, Sb2O3 and Cr2O3 were added to ZnO step by step to identify the effect of each component. The specimens were prepared by sintering at 110$0^{\circ}C$ and 120$0^{\circ}C$ in ambient atmosphere. In ZnO-Bi2O3-Sb2O3 ternary system, decrease of averge grain size due to antimony oxide addition depends on sintering temperature as well as Bi2O3 content. When Sb2O3 was partly or completely replaced by Cr2O3, grain size was further reduced. A significant amount of pyrochlore phase which was not transformed to spinel and Bi2O3-rich liquid phase seemed to remain during sintering at 110$0^{\circ}C$. Unlike ZnO-Bi2O3-Sb2O3 system, the $\alpha$-spinel phase containing significant amount of Cr did not transform to pyrochlore during furnace cooling. Fine spinel particles around 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ size were ovserved within ZnO grains and grain boundaries, which were believed to be responsible for grain-growth inhibition in ZnO-Bi2O3-Sb2O3.

  • Evolution of tip vortex generated by a model rotor blade which has a symmetric blade section has been investigated by use of the laser doppler anemometry. Swirl and axial velocity components of tip vortex were measured by the phase averaging technique within one revolution of a rotor blade. It was found that tip vortex becomes matured until 27 degrees and diffuses afterwards with diffusing rate becoming slower compared to the case of the asymmetric blade section, but the tip loss was expected to become more substantial. Swirl velocity components were well fit to n=2 model of Vatistas within measured wake ages, showing the self-similarity exists for the swirl velocity components. The axial components were followed with Gaussian profiles, but had much higher peak values than those of the symmetric blade section.

  • The Large-scale structure of the circular jet in the transition region, which influences the subsequent flow in the turbulent region, was studied experimentally. Measuring equipments are composed of the two channel hot-wire anemometer, the computer controlled two-directional traverse mechanism, the data acquisition system, and FFT-analyzer. The circular jet has 50mm diameter. The mean velocity distribution, the velocity fluctuation, the auto 'cross correlations and the power spectra were acquired at moderate Reynolds number of 10$^{4}$. And the VITA method was used to measure the convection velocity of Large-scale eddy. The phase of u'is in advance of that of v'in all regions. .over bar. $R_{u}$(.tau.=0) is approximately zero in the potential core region, but a small regular deviation is observed. At a position in the mixing layer region the convection velocity is different along the part of the eddy, and in this experiment the convection velocity of the inner region is larger than the outer region. The averge convection velocity of the eddy along y/D=0 was approximately constant in the transition region.D=0 was approximately constant in the transition region.

  • This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of feeding with fiber diets on growth performance in weaned piglets. A total of 240 pigs with an averge weight of 8.69±0.45 kg at 28±2 days of age were allocated into a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with a total of 6 treatments and 5 replications per treatment in the pig barn. The experimental treatments were as follows: 1) Negative control (NC: Basal diet), 2) Positive control (PC: Basal diet+antibiotic), 3) SBP2 (Basal diet+2% sugar beet pulp addition), 4) SBP8 (Basal diet+8%diet+8% sugar beet pulp addition), 5) OH2 (Basal diet+2% sugar beet pulp), and 6) OH8 (Basal diet+8% oat hull addition). The pigs were fed phase I diets for 2 weeks and phase II diets for 3 weeks, with the average daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI) measured on days 14 and 35. During 2 week the growth performance of the PC treatment, with 0.1% antibiotic addition, showed a significant increase (P<0.05). In 0~5 weeks, the growth performance in the PC treatment was the highest. Treatments with dietary fiber additions exhibited lower daily gains compared to the PC treatment but were higher than the NC treatment. SBP8, with 8% sugar beet pulp addition, showed growth performance comparable to the PC treatment (P<0.05). Additionally, the 8% fiber addition level demonstrated significantly higher daily gains compared to the 2% addition level (P<0.05). The addition of fiber to pig diets resulted in lower growth performance compared to treatments with antibiotic additions. However, the pigs fed SBP8 showed growth performance equivalent to those in the PC treatment, suggesting the potential of sugar beet pulp as a substitute for antibiotics in pig feed. The growth attributed to sugar beet pulp addition in the feed is speculated to occur while the immature gut of the pigs is developing and due to the positive influence of sugar beet pulp's fiber source on the gut environment.
