  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of bee venom pharmacopuncture therapy in patients with lumbar spinal stenosis. Methods : This clinical study was carried out on 119 patients with lumbar spinal stenosis, who had been admitted from May, 2009 to March, 2011. Patients were sorted into two groups ; One group(bee venom pharmacopuncture group) was treated with bee venom pharmacopuncture and acupuncture therapy, the other(non-bee venom pharmacopuncture group) with acupuncture therapy only. Verbal numerical rating scale(VNRS) and Oswestry disability index(ODI) were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment in both groups. VNRS and ODI scores of the two groups were statistically compared. Results : The bee venom pharmacopuncture group demonstrated a more significant improvement than non-bee venom pharmacopuncture group when evaluated with VNRS and ODI. Conclusions : In the case of the patients with spinal stenosis, it was found that treatment with combination of bee venom pharmacopuncture and acupuncture was more effective in improving the conditions of the patients (subsidence of the symptoms) than the acupuncture treatment only.

  • Objectives: This study was performed to estimate the effectiveness of burning acupuncture therapy (Hwachim) and sweet bee venom pharmacopuncture (S-BV pharmacopuncture) in treating lateral epicondylitis of elbow. Methods: We selected 33 patients at first, but 13 patients were excluded due to unclear medical records. Finally, a total of 20 patients who had received treatment from January 2012 to December 2013 were included in this study; all 20 patients had undergone Hwachim for the treatment of lateral epicondylitis of elbow, and 19 of the 20 had been treated with S-BV pharmacopuncture (Korea Pharmacopuncture Institute, KPI) and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) as an ancillary treatment method. The degrees of pain of the 20 patients were evaluated by using the visual analogue scale (VAS) score at their first and final visits. The Wilcoxon signed rank test and the Kruskal-Wallis test were used to compare the VAS scores statistically. Results: The VAS score had decreased significantly from $10.00{\pm}0.00$ to $4.00{\pm}2.47$ (P = 0.000) by the end of the treatment. No significant changes were observed based on the number of treatments (P = 0.246), the age of the patients (P = 0.810), the duration of the illness (P = 0.705), and the location of the lesion (P = 0.076). Conclusion: This study suggests Hwachim and S-BV pharmacopuncture are very effective for treating lateral epicondylitis of the elbow.

  • Objectives : The Purpose of this study is to investigate and report the effectiveness of Hominis Placenta using Pharmacopuncture treatment for trigger finger. Methods : 3 Patients are admitted at Dept. of Oriental Rehabilitation, Bu-Chun Jaseng Oriental Medicine Hospital, diagnosed as Trigger finger and treated with Hominis Placenta Pharmacopuncture. Each cases are measured and assessed by Quinnell's classification of triggering and VAS (Visual Analogue Scale) scores. Results : 3 Patients of trigger finger have a different kind of cause and fingers lesion they have, but nodules are not significantly found up, so we could classify all of 3 patients to diffuse type. After treatment of Hominis placenta Pharmacopuncture, spontaneous pain and tenderness, grades of triggering are decreased significantly. We would expect that Hominis placenta Pharmacopuncture has a effect on degenerative diseases of diffuse type's tendon sheath. Conclusions : Trigger finger is generally divided into two stages, inflammatory and degenerative stage, and when degenerative stage, Hominis placenta pharmacopuncture appears to be effective.
