The ballast gravels are often contaminated by various pollutants, like diesel fuel, lubricants, and heavy metals. Especially, the gravels near the switching are apt to be polluted by the lubricant. Because this lubricant can pollute the soil of track, the contaminated ballast gravels should be cleaned immediately. In this study, a physical desorption method was used to remove the oil contaminants from the surface of the ballast gravels. Thermosetting resin was used as a media for physical remediation of ballast gravels. The total petroleum hydrocarbon of the gravels was monitored over time. In addition, scanning electron microscopic images were obtained to observe the removal of the oily pollutants from the surface of the gravels.
A simultaneous determination method of BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, o,m.p-xylene) and TPH (kerosene, diesel, jet fuel and bunker C) in soil with gas chromatography/flame ionization detection (GC-FID) was described. The effects of extracti on method, extraction solvent, solvent volume and extraction time on the extraction performance were studied. A sonication method was simpler and more efficient than Soxhlet or shaking methods. Sonication with 10 mL of acetone/methylene chloride (1 : 1, v/v) for 10 min was found to be optimal extraction conditions for 20 g of soil. Peak shapes and quantification of BTEX and TPH were excellent, with linear calibration curves over a wide range of 1-500 mg/L for BTEX and 10-5000 mg/L for TPH. Good reproducibilities by sonication were obtained, with the RSD values below 10%. By using about 20 g of soil, detection limits were 0.8 mg/L for BTEX and 10 mg/L for TPH. The advantages of this procedure are the use of simple and common equipment, reduced volumes of organic solvents, rapid extraction periods of less than 20 min, and simultaneous analysis of volatile and semivolatile compounds.

Since LPG (Liquefied petroleum gas) fuel supply system has an advantage of low emission characteristics, many studies have been conducted. In spite of the advantage of LPG supply system, a higher vapor pressure and lower viscosity than diesel or gasoline fuel may cause unstable running of fuel pump by the deterioration in lubrication performance and chemical reaction with rubber parts than that of diesel and gasoline fuel. Therefore its physical properties can cause the deterioration of durability. In this research, we developed an external type LPG pump which has the advantage of the price competitiveness and the convenient maintenance for LPLi system. The experiments were carried out in order to assess characteristics of the external type fuel pump at different fuel composition and temperature. As a result, there aren't any differences between internal and external type pump performance. It is observed that the same level of efficiency was maintained for both pumps as flow rate was increased with higher fuel temperature and more contents of propane in the fuel. And the pressure difference in LPLi system is maintained at constant with the various fuel compositions and temperatures due to their own characteristics of fuel supply system.

In this study, a feasibility test of liquid petroleum gas (LPG) compression ignition (CI) engine has been carried out to study the effectiveness of cetane enhancing additive: Di-tertiary-butyl peroxide (DTBP). Performance and emissions characteristics of a CI engine fuelled with DTBP blended LPG fuel were examined. Also, the effect of EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) on the combustion and emissions characteristics has been investigated. Results showed that stable engine operation over a wide range of the engine loads was possible. Exhaust emissions measurements showed that hydrocarbon were decreased with the blended fuel at enhancing cetane number. Furthermore, the combustion stability of LPG with a cetane number improver was equivalent to that of commercial Diesel fuel. Increasing the EGR rate leads to deteriorate the IMEP (indicated mean effective pressure) and increase the ignition delay. It was found that the exhaust emissions with the EGR resulted in a very large reduction in nitrogen oxides at the expense of higher THC and CO emissions. Considering the results of engine performance and exhaust emissions, LPG blended fuel of enhancing cetane number could be used as an alternative fuel for diesel in a CI engine.
Toxicity test for biodiesel (BD), biodiesel-derived neopentyl polyol ester (NPE) lubricant oil base, lubricant oil for diesel engine oil (LODE) and petroleum diesel (PD) was carried out using earthworm, Eisenia fefida. According to the method by OECD 207, the $LC_{50}$ values of BD and NPE were estimated as 2,450 and 1,528 mg/kg, respectively, which indicate that these compounds are classified as slightly toxic compounds. The $LC_{50}$ values of LODE and PD were estimated as 500 and 603mg/kg, respectively, showing that theses compounds are evaluated as moderately toxic compounds.
Emissions inputs for use in air quality modeling of Korea were generated with the emissions inventory data from the National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER), maintained under the Clean Air Policy Support System (CAPSS) database. Source Classification Codes (SCC) in the Korea emissions inventory were adapted to use with the U.S. EPA's Sparse Matrix Operator Kernel Emissions (SMOKE) by finding the best-matching SMOKE default SCCs for the chemical speciation and temporal allocation. A set of 19 surrogate spatial allocation factors for South Korea were developed utilizing the Multi-scale Integrated Modeling System (MIMS) Spatial Allocator and Korean GIS databases. The mobile and area source emissions data, after temporal allocation, show typical sinusoidal diurnal variations with high peaks during daytime, while point source emissions show weak diurnal variations. The model-ready emissions are speciated for the carbon bond version 4 (CB-4) chemical mechanism. Volatile organic carbon (VOC) emissions from painting related industries in area source category significantly contribute to TOL (Toluene) and XYL (Xylene) emissions. ETH (Ethylene) emissions are largely contributed from point industrial incineration facilities and various mobile sources. On the other hand, a large portion of OLE (Olefin) emissions are speciated from mobile sources in addition to those contributed by the polypropylene industry in point source. It was found that FORM (Formaldehyde) is mostly emitted from petroleum industry and heavy duty diesel vehicles. Chemical speciation of PM2.5 emissions shows that PEC (primary fine elemental carbon) and POA (primary fine organic aerosol) are the most abundant species from diesel and gasoline vehicles. To reduce uncertainties in processing the Korea emission inventory due to the mapping of Korean SCCs to those of U.S., it would be practical to develop and use domestic source profiles for the top 10 SCCs for area and point sources and top 5 SCCs for on-road mobile sources when VOC emissions from the sources are more than 90% of the total.
Toxicity test for biodiesel (BD), biodiesel-derived neopentyl polyol ester (NPE) lubricant oil base, lubricant oil for diesel engine (LODE) and petroleum diesel (PD) was carried out using microalgae, Chlorella vulgaris. According to the method of OECD 201, the $EC_{50}$ values of BD and NPE were estimated as 84 and 69 mg/L, respectively, which indicates that these compounds are classified as slightly toxic compounds. The $EC_{50}$ values of LODE and PD were measured as 42 and 24 mg/mL, respectively, showing that these compounds are considered as moderately toxic compounds.
The In recent years, the need for more fuel-efficient and lower-emission vehicles has driven the technical development of alternative fuels such as LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) which is able to meet the limits of better emission levels without many modifications to current engine design. LPG has a high vapor pressure and lower viscosity and surface tension than diesel and gasoline fuels. These different fuel characteristics make it difficult to directly apply the conventional gasoline or diesel fuel pump. In this study, experiments are performed to get initial performance and efficiency of the fuel pump under different condition of the temperature and composition of fuel. The characteristics of vane type fuel pump were investigated to access the applicability on LPLi engine.
With the development of an eco-friendly environment and the automobile industry, research is being actively conducted to increase thermal efficiency and reduce exhaust gas through complete combustion in internal combustion engine vehicles. In particular, research is underway to increase engine load and output by understanding the volatility and combustion characteristics of gasoline, and research is underway to reduce soot and harmful gases and realize optimal efficiency based on the distillation and combustion characteristics of diesel fuel. . Therefore, in this study, based on the contents of KS M ISO 3045 on the distillation test method for petroleum products according to the Korean industrial standard, distillation experiments were conducted based on gasoline and diesel from 4 refineries marketed and used in Korea. The distillation experiment confirmed the correlation with the distillation temperature according to the amount of distillation, and the distillation characteristics were analyzed by comparing the distilled fuel to confirm the suitability of meeting the test standards.
Resistivity cone penetrometer test (RCPT) can be employed at a relatively low cost for in-situ delineation of subsurface contamination. While the resistivity measurement has a potential to investigate the subsurface contamination, resistivity measurements alone will lead to some degree of ambiguity in the results. In this study, capacitance measurement was incorporated into the RCPT to overcome the ambiguity inherent in electrical resistivity measurements. This study is focused on verifying the applicability of resistivity and capacitance measurements of CPT module to provide information on subsurface contaminated by heavy metal and petroleum hydrocarbon. Laboratory model tests were performed to evaluate the sensitivity of the measured resistivity and relative capacitance on the water content and different types of contaminants. Test results show that simultaneous measurement of electrical resistivity and capacitance can give more reliable information on subsurface contamination. Electrical measurements of the CPT module showed high applicability to be used in detecting saturated soils contaminated by heavy metal and diesel plume floating above the groundwater table.
