Evaluation of Biodegradation in an Aquifer Contaminated with Petroleum Hydrocarbon

  • To evaluate the biodegradability of contaminants in an aquifer, computer modeling with RT3D model (Clement, 1997) was used. The RT3D model simulates the biodegradation of organic contaminants using a number of aerobic and anaerobic electron acceptors. The RT3D model was applied to a well-studied petroleum hydrocarbon plume in a shallow unconfined aquifer in Uiwang, Korea. The results of this study demonstrate tile importance of biodegradation processes in the monitored natural attenuation and in reducing contaminant concentrations in a shallow aquifer. The modeling results tell that the amount of electron acceptors is the key factor affecting biodegradation of TEX, the petroleum hydrocarbon contaminant in shallow groundwater

  • Many methods have been developed for the remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater. Among those technologies, in-situ bioremediation is most likely to be cost-effective method for petroleum hydrocarbon contamination. But the in-situ bioremediation can require more time to remediate hydrocarbon-contaminated soil and groundwater than other methods. Therefore we intended to save time of in-situ bioremediation using a biological additive to activate indigenous microbes in soil. The additive, 'Inipol EAP 22' stimulates the growth of specific flora, significantly accelerating the speed at which hydrocarbons are biodegraded. And it hans been tested in accordance with protocol approved by the USEPA and is registered on the National Contingency Plan Product Schedule List. In the experiment, three soil samples contaminated with fuel oil were prepared in the same concentration. Inipol EAP 22 was not added to one sample and was added to the other two samples with 5% and 10% of hydrocarbon by weight respectively. And $CO_2$gas derived from bacterial respiration was analyzed in each samples for 15 days. As a result, 145% and 153% of $CO_2$ evolution (microbial respiration) against the sample without 'Inipol EAP 22' occurred in samples with 'Inipol EAP 22' addition of 5% and 10%, respectively

윤활유 유래 철도오염 토양의 정화 타당성 연구 (Feasibility study on remediation for railway contaminated soil with waste-lubricant)

  • 철도의 토양오염은 크게 총석유계탄화수소(total petroleum hydrocarbon, TPH)에 의한 오염과 중금속류에 의한 오염으로 구분할 수 있다. 이중 TPH 오염은 디젤과 윤활유에 의해서 발생한다. 본 연구에서는 철도 윤활유 유래 오염토양을 정화하기 위해 토양세척방법, 화학적 산화법, 초음파 추출법의 타당성을 연구하였다. 디젤 유래 오염 토양의 토양세척에 많이 사용되는 비이온성 계면활성제는 윤활유 유래 오염 토양의 정화에는 효과적이지 않았다. 다양한 종류의 알코올과 계면활성제를 함께 사용한 경우, 계면활성제만 사용한 경우보다 효과적이었다. 따라서 TPH 오염 철도 토양의 TPH의 오염원에 따라 다른 방법을 적용하는 것이 정화효율을 높일 수 있다.

반환미군기지 기능별 토양오염특성에 관한 연구 (Study on the soil contamination characteristics according to the functions of the returned U.S. military base)

  • There are U.S. troops with a force about 290,000 strong stationed all around the world, approximately 150 countries. Among the troops, USFK has performed principal part with its stationing for 50 years against the military threat of North Korea. However, as a result of an investigation made into environmental contamination of several bases which were restituted from US to ROK by the Land Partnership Plan in the process of relocation of USFK, it was found that the area was contaminated by not only TPH and BTEX caused by diesel fuel and JP-8 but also various heavy metal over the standard level according to the operations of corps. Among these bases, 4 corps, each of which has different duties and function, were chosen to be analyzed for the characteristics and degrees of soil contamination. Fisrt of all, in armored camp the soil was contaminated by TPH and heavy metal (Zn, Ni, Pb) due to the repairing activities of tracked vehicles and shooting exercises. In army aviation camp, the soil was contaminated by TPH, BTEX and heavy metal (Zn, Cd) due to repairing activities of aircrafts. Also, in engineer camp there was contaminated area polluted by TPH and heavy metal (Zn, Pb) caused by open-air storage of various construction materials and TPH, BTEX and heavy metal (Zn, Pb, Cu) contamination of aircraft shooting area in shooting range camp were detected. Managing environment will be more effective when we identify the contaminative characteristics and take necessary measures in advance.

철도레일 부근 토양의 다환방향족 탄화수소 및 중금속 오염도 조사 (Investigation of Pollution of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Heavy Metals in Soil near Railway Rails)

  • Trains have been a major means of transport in Korea during these past decades. However, train facilities such as stations and repair shops are contaminated with organic and inorganic substances. There is a high probability of train facility contamination with polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). This study evaluated the PAH and heavy metal contamination of soil near railroads in the Kyungpook area. A total of 18 soil samples were collected from the railroads and analyzed for 16 PAHs and 6 heavy metal species. The contamination level of the top soil was found to be slightly higher than that of the subsoil for contamination with PAHs. The ratio of carcinogenic PAH concentration to the total PAH concentration was relatively high, with a maximum of 0.9. The toxicity equivalent (TEQ) of the PAHs were 500.6 ng/kg in the topsoil and 355.5 ng/kg in the subsoil. The ratio of low molecular PAHs (LPAHs) to high molecular PAHs (LPAHs) ranged from 6.7 to 29.5; this shows that contamination is primarily due to combustion of fuel rather than due to petroleum. The ratio of phenanthrene to anthracene and the ratio of fluoranthene to pyrene also show that contamination occurred due to combustion for transportation. The heavy metal contamination level was lower than the Korean standard, but higher than the background concentration; this indicates that the soil was affected by the operation of the railways.

라돈 추적자를 이용한 유류오염에 대한 연구 (Investigation on the petroleum contamination by using Rn-222 tracer)

  • 신속한 유류오염 조사를 위해 자연 방사성 동위원소인 Rn-222를 추적자로 활용하였다. 디젤유로 오염된 화강암 토양시료중의 Rn-222를 액체섬광계수기를 사용하여 분석한 결과 라돈 농도는 유류의 함량에 비례하여 감소하였으며 13%까지 오염시킨 경우 Rn-222의 함량은 30% 까지 감소하였다. TCE로 오염된 지하수의 오염범위를 알기위해 Rn-222를 물과 유류간의 분배계수차이를 활용한 추적자로 사용하였다. 원주의TCE 오염 지하수에 대한 오염범위를 예측하기 위해 Rn-222 분석을 수행하였다.

  • 항공유에 fatty acid methyl esters (FAME)가 혼합될 경우 연료 공급시스템과 항공기 엔진에 치명적인 고장의 원인이 될 수 있기 때문에 항공유 품질규격에서 FAME 함량을 50 mg/kg 이하로 규정하고 있다. 무수히 많은 탄화수소로 구성된 항공유 중의 FAME 성분을 선택적으로 분석하기 어렵기 때문에 본 연구에서는 MDGC-MS를 사용한 새로운 시험방법을 개발하였다. Deans switching 시스템이 설치된 MDGC-MS를 이용하면 코코넛 오일이나 팜유 유래의 저분자량 FAME 성분도 분석이 가능함을 확인하였다. 개발된 시험방법은 FAME 피크의 머무름 시간을 약간 뒤로 이동시키는 매질 효과(matrix effect)를 현행의 기준 시험방법(IP 585)보다 약 20배 이하로 감소시킬 수 있었다. MDGC-MS는 항공유에 미량의 FAME가 오염되었는지 여부를 정성 및 정량적으로 확인할 수 있는 시험방법으로 적합하였다.

차량 운행에 따른 엔진오일 물성변화 연구 (A Study on the Change of Physical Properties of Engine Oil after Vehicle Driving)

  • The engine oil is an oil used for lubrication of various internal combustion engines. Recently, the vehicle and engine oil manufacture usually guarantee for oil change over 15000~20000 km mileage, but the most of driver usually change engine oil every 5000 km driving in Korea. In this case, it is possible to cause environmental contamination by used engine oil and increase the cost of driving by frequently oil change. In this study, we investigate the various physical properties such as flash point, pour point, kinematic viscosity, cold cranking simulator, total acid number, and four-ball test for fresh engine oil and used engine oil after vehicle driving (5000 km, 10000 km). The test result showed that the total acid number and wear scar by four-ball test of used engine oil had increased than fresh engine oil, but 2 kind of used oil (5000 km and 10000 km) had similar physical properties.

원유와 석유제품 중의 다환방향족탄화수소류[PAHs] 분포특성과 발생원 (Compositional Characteristics and Origin of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons[PAHs] of Crude Oils and Petroleum Products)

  • Compositional characteristics and origin of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs), which should be strongly regulated for environmental protection in the crude oils and petroleum products, have been investigated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC/MS). In the crude oils analyzed, two-rings compound(naphthalene) of PAHs was detected around $72.3\sim93.5%$, but five- or six-rings compound of PAHs was not detected. In the crude oils analyzed, the molecular ratio indices of Phe/Ant(phenanthrene/anthracene)>15, Fla/Pyr(fluoranthene/pyrene)<1, BaA/Chr(benzo (a)anthracene/chrysene)$\leq0.4$ could be effectively applied, and we found that the origin of PAHs was petrogenic sources. Total PAHs concentrations in the crude oils were increased with increasing API gravity and with decreasing sulfur contents of the analyzed crude oils. Five- or six-rings compound of PAHs were not included in ail petroleum products except bunker-C. Furthermore, the molecular ratio indices of Phe/Ant(phenanthrene/anthracene) vs. Fla/Pyr(fluoranthene/pyrene) could be effectively applied as the standard for the PAHs contamination criterion at the other Korean areas.

토양.지하수오염원 관리우선순위 개략평가기법 개발 (Development of Preliminary Assessment Methodology for Priority Listing of Soil and Groundwater Contamination Sources)

  • This study developed preliminary assessment methodology for priority listing of soil and groundwater contamination sources, considering source characteristics, local environments and risk receptors. Source characteristics were evaluated by scoring relative risk of contamination sources. Local environments were evaluated by scoring annual rainfall, hydraulic conductivity of aquifer, and annual groundwater use. Risk receptors were evaluated by scoring local population, direct distance to surface water, direct distance to drinking-water wells. Scores of each parameter were allocated by analysing distribution of parameter values obtained from government databases. Distributed scores of source characteristics local environments: risk receptors were 12 : 12 : 12. The preliminary assessment scored 0 to 36 for each soil and groundwater sources. Inventory of soil and groundwater sources consisted of 7 categories. This study applied the preliminary assessment methodology to Manan-Gu, Anyang City, Korea. The number of car repair and washing facility was the largest in the contamination source inventory. Petroleum storage facilities showed the highest assessment score. The preliminary assessment methodology also indicated that Anyang-Dong was the priority section among Anyang-Dong, Suksu-Dong, Bakdal-Dong. This study is the first trial for relative ranking soil and groundwater contamination sources by considering source and local characteristics. Therefore, further researches and revision of the preliminary assessment methodology need to be pursued for various applications.
