A zeolite membrane shows better thermal, mechanical and chemical stabilities than a polymer membrane. Water was separated from iso-propyl alcohol (IPA)/water mixtures by pervaporation using the NaY zeolite membrane synthesized in the laboratory. The effects of a mole fraction of IPA in the feed solution and an operating temperature were studied on the permeation flux behavior and the separation factor of water with respect to IPA. As a mole fraction of IPA increased, the water flux as well as the separation factor decreased. As the experimental temperature increased, the water permeation flux increased while the separation factor decreased. For IPA/water binary mixtures, the water flukes through the NaY zeolite membrane were observed to be $1.9{\times}10^2{\sim}3.5{\times}10^3\;g/m^2{\cdot}hr$ and the separation factors were found to be $7.0{\times}10^2{\sim}2.0{\times}10^4$.
In the crosslining reaction of poly(vinyl alcohoJ)(PVA) with sulfur-succinic acid which had been established in our previous work, reaction temperature, 15$0^{\circ}C$, was so high to collapse the pore struc¬tures in support membrane for the preparation of composite membrane. Therefore, the efforts have been focused on lowering of the reaction temperature to 100$^{\circ}$C by using a catalysis, HC!. The newly established crosslinking reaction was characterized through the analysis of the chemical and thermal properties. From these results, the optimum conditions for the membrane preparation couId be drawn as followings : (i) reac¬tion temperature, 100 $^{\circ}C$,(ii) reaction time, 90 min, (iii) the concentration of the catalysis (HCD, 1.5%. Com¬posite membranes were fabricated by coating a casting solution containing PYA, sulfur-succinic acid and HCl on a support membrane followed by crosslinking it at 10$0^{\circ}C$. The resulting membranes were applied to the pervaporation separation of methyl-tert-butyl ether(MTBE)/methanol (MeOH) mixtures at 30, 40, and 5O$^{\circ}C$. The flux of 5.09 g/$m^2$hr at 5O$^{\circ}C$ and the highest separation factor of 1622 were obtained, respectively.
NCO-terminated prepolymers were synthesized by reacting carbonate-type polyol(PTMCG)($M_w=1,000$ and 2,000) with MDI and N-methyldiethanolamine, as a chain extender. Carbonate-type polyurethane containg zwitterionic group was prepared by reacting the prepolymer with 1,3-propane sultone. From the IR and NMR spectra of model reactions, it was known that the ionization occurred under the same condition. The structure of zwitterionic carbonate-type polyurethane(ZPU) therefore could be confirmed from the model reactions. Glass transition temperature(Tg) ranged between $-15{\sim}-30^{\circ}C$ from the thermal data. Tg was between $-15{\sim}-18^{\circ}C$ for a series of ZPU10 samples and between $-25{\sim}-26^{\circ}C$ for a series of ZPU20 polymers. Tensile strength increased with mole ratio of ionic content. On the contrary, elongation was rather dropped with mole ratio of ionic content. ZPU10-30 having better tensile strength and less elongation was selected as a membrane for the concentration of ethanol aqueous solution through pervaporation. To obtain the better selectivity, it was crosslinked with HMDI. In the swelling test, it showed the higher swelling degree at around 50wt% ethanol concentration due to the plastization effect of ethanol. To optimize the separation capacity, two operating factors-feed concentration and temperature-were considered. The overall separation capacity was as follows : separation factor, 2~83.2 ; the flux, $25.4{\sim}58.8g/m^2hr$.
The present work was attempted to improve the performance for the removal of water from ethanol/water mixtures through the ion-exchanged zeolite membrane in which $Na^{+}$ ion was substituted to either $K^{+}$ or $Ca^{2+}$ ion. The membranes were ion-exchanged with 0.5 mole/L aqueous solution of either KCl or $CaCl_2$ at $80^{\circ}C$ for 4 hrs. In case of the ion-exchanged membrane in which $Na^{+}$ ion was substituted to $K^{+}$ ion, the total flux was decreased from $900\;g/m^2{\cdot}hr{\sim}2,500\;g/m^2{\cdot}hr$ to $600\;g/m^2{\cdot}hr{\sim}2,000\;g/m^2{\cdot}hr$ and the separation factor was increased from $600{\sim}2,200$ to $850{\sim}2,500$ compared to the NaA type zeolite membrane. And in case of the ion-exchanged membrane in which $Na^{+}$ ion is substituted to $Ca^{2+}$ ion, both the total flux and selectivity of water showed the similar tendency compared to the NaA type zeolite membrane. It is thought that the improved separation would be possible if the pore size of the zeolite membrane is controlled by the ion exchange.
Pervaporation separation of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) and methanol (MeOH) mixture, of which the former compound is well known as the octane booster was carried out. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membranes crosslinked with poly(acrylic acid) which have been successfully applied on the water-alcohol mixtures were used in this study. The PVA/PAA ratio in the crosslinked membranes was 95/5, 90/10, 85/15, 80/20, and 75/25 by weight. The operating temperatures were 30, 40, and 50$\circ$C, and the compositions of MTBE and MeOH to be separated were 95/5, 90/10, and 80/20 (MTBE/MeOH) solutions. PVA/PAA=85/15 membrane showed the separation factor $\alpha_{MeOH/MTBE}$=4000 and the permeation rate of 10.1 g/m$^2$hr for MTBE/MeOH=80/20 solution at 50$\circ$. When the same membrane was used, the separation factor and permeation rate for MTBE/MeOH=90/10 solution at 40$\circ$C were $\alpha_{MeOH/MTBE}$=6000 and 8.5 g/m$^2$hr, respectively. Also, the hydrophilic/hydrophobic balance of the membranes would take an important role in the relationships between the membranes and separation performances in terms of the flux and the separation factor.
The hydorgen ions in PVA/SSA membranes were substituted with monovalent metal ions, $Li^{+}$, $Na^{+}$, $K^{+}$, divalent metal ion forms, $Mg^{2+}$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Ba^{2+}$, trivalent metal ion forms, $Al^{+}$. The effect of exchange with metal ions was investigated through the swelling measurement and pervaporative experiments for water-ethanol and water-methanol mixtures at various operating conditions. In addition, ESCA analysis was carried out to study the substitution of the metal ions in membranes. The swelling ratio decerased in the sequence of $Li^{+}$, $Na^{+}$, $K^{+}$ and this might be due to the 'salting-out` effect while the swelling ratios for divalnet and trivalent ion-substituted membranes were affected by the combined effect of salting-out, electrostatic crosslinking and extent of metal ion substitution. For the pervaporation performance, PVA/SSA-$H^{+}$membrane showed the lowest flux and highest separation factor for all aqueous ethanol solutions. The typical results of the flux, 59 g/$m^{2}$hr and the separation factor, 44 were obtained at $50^{\circ}C$ for 90% ethanol aqueous mixture. For water-methanol solutions, the PVA/SSA membranes substituted with monovalent PVA/SSA membranes substituted with divalent and tribalent metal ions, both `salting-out` and electrostatic effects affected the pervaporative results.
Prediction method of permeation flux and sorption characteristics in pervaporation through a polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) memrane was suggested. The amount of sorption and permeation flux of chloroform, toluene, methanol and n-butanol were calculated with this method and compared with this method and compared with experimetal data. The calculated values of permeation flux and the amount of sorption of good solvents, that is, toluene and chloroform were well agreed with the experimental data. The lower the density of PDMS membrane is, the more permeation flux and sorption quantity were increased. However, the experimental data of poor solvents, that is, methanol and n-butanol were no so well agreed with the calculated values. It is shown that the prediction method suggested in this study may be used without experimetnal for the prediction of permeation flux and sorption quantity of the good solvent on PDMS membrane.
Amorphous ceramic membranes have been developed for gas phase separation and liquid phase separation (water treatment, wastewater treatment and separation of organic solvent or compounds) because of their thermal stability and solvent resistance. In this paper, ceramic membranes were categorized by membrane pore size and materials, and summarized for hydrogen separation, carbon dioxide separation, membrane reactor, pervaporation and water treatment with membrane structure and properties.
