  • This paper concerns a SCARA type robot with the second arm flexible. Its equations of motion are derived by the Lagrangian mechanics. For controller design, the perturbation approach is taken to separate the original equations of motion into linear equations describing small perturbed motions and nonlinear equations describing purely rigid motion of the robot. To effect the desired payload motion, open loop control inputs are first determined based on the inverse dynamics of the latter. Next, in order to reduce the positional error during maneuver, an active vibration suppression is done. To this end, a feedback control is designed for robustness against disturbance on the basis of the linear equations and the LQR theory modified with a prescribed degree of stability. The numerical simulations results show the satisfactory control performance.

  • We propose a new linearized model which can be used very efficiently for the design and analysis of the autopilot of aerodynamically controlled skid-to-turn missiles. Proposed model is based on the linearized equations of the missile dynamics derived in the aerodynamic frame where xz plane contains the missile longitudinal axis and velocity vector. However, to take the effect due to the small perturbation of the missile body into consideration, we introduce a new frame which is identical to the aerodynamic frame in the trim state but after small perturbation it moves fixed with the missile body, and finally, the proposed model is set up in this frame. It is shown by nonlinear simulations and stability analysis of a numerical example that the new model describes the missile motion better than the conventional one linearized in the body frame with a certain amount of simplification.

  • A thermal postbuckling analysis is presented for a moderately thick rectangular plate subjected to uniform or nonuniform tent-like temperature loading and resting on an elastic foundation. The plate is assumed to be simply supported on its two opposite edges and the two side edges remain free. The initial geometrical imperfection of the plate is taken into account. The formulation are based on the Reissner-Mindlin plate theory considering the first order shear deformation effect, and including plate-foundation interaction and thermal effects. The analysis uses a mixed Galerkin-perturbation technique to determine the thermal buckling loads and postbuckling equilibrium paths. Numerical examples are presented that relate to the performances of perfect and imperfect, moderately thick plates resting on Pasternak-type or softening nonlinear elastic foundations from which results for Winker elastic foundations follow as a limiting case. Typical results are presented in dimensionless graphical form.

  • In this paper, the case study of reducing rotational errors is done for a grinding spindle with an active magnetic bearing system. The rotational errors acting on the magnetic bearing spindle are due to mass unbalance of rotor, runout, grinding excitation and unmodeled nonlinear dynamics of electromagnets. For the most case, the electrical runout of sensor target is big even in well-finished surface; this runout can cause a rotation error amplified by feedback control system. The adaptive feedforward method based on LMS algorithm is discussed to compensate this kind of runout effects, and investigated its effectiveness by numerical simulation and experimental analysis. The rotor orbit size in both bearings is reduced about to 5 pin due to lX rejection by feedforward control up to 50,000 rpm.

  • In this study the investigation of large deflections subject in compliant mechanisms is presented using homotopy perturbation method (HPM). The main purpose is to propose a convenient method of solution for the large deflection problem in compliant mechanisms in order to overcome the difficulty and complexity of conventional methods, as well as for the purpose of mathematical modeling and optimization. For simplicity, a cantilever beam of linear elastic material under horizontal, vertical and bending moment end point load is considered. The results show that the applied method is very accurate and capable for cantilever beams and can be used for a large category of practical problems for the aim of optimization. Also the consequence of effective parameters on the large deflection is analyzed and presented.

  • An analytical method is presented to investigate electromagnetothermoelastic behaviors of a hollow sphere composed of functionally graded piezoelectric material (FGPM), placed in a uniform magnetic field, subjected to electric, thermal and mechanical loads. For the case that material properties obey an identical power law in the radial direction of the FGPM hollow sphere, exact solutions for electric displacement, stresses, electric potential and perturbation of magnetic field vector in the FGPM hollow sphere are determined by using the infinitesimal theory of electromagnetothermoelasticity. Some useful discussion and numerical examples are presented to show the significant influence of material inhomogeneity. The aim of this research is to understand the effect of composition on electromagnetothermoelastic stresses and to design optimum FGPM hollow spheres.

  • We present our first attempt at understanding the dual impact of the large-scale density and velocity environment on the formation of very first astrophysical objects in the Universe. Following the recently developed quasi-linear perturbation theory on this effect, we introduce the publicly available initial condition generator of ours, BCCOMICS (Baryon Cold dark matter COsMological Inital Condition generator for Small scales), which provides so far the most self-consistent treatment of this physics beyond the usual linear perturbation theory. From a suite of uniform-grid simulations of N-body+hydro+BCCOMICS, we find that the formation of first astrophysical objects is strongly affected by both the density and velocity environment. Overdensity and streming-velocity (of baryon against cold dark matter) are found to give positive and negative impact on the formation of astrophysical objects, which we quantify in terms of various physical variables.

  • The elastic theory of beams is fundamental in engineering of design and structure. In this study, we construct Green's function for inhomogeneous fourth-order differential operators subjected to associated constraints that arises in dealing with dynamic problems in the Rayleigh beam. We obtain solutions for homogeneous and completely inhomogeneous beam problems using Green's function. This enables us to consider rotational influences in determining the eigenfrequency of beam vibrations. Additionally, we investigate the dynamic vibration model of inhomogeneous beams incorporating rotational effects. The eigenvalues of Rayleigh beams, including first-order correction terms, are also computed and displayed in tabular forms.
