  • In this paper, the peristaltic flow of Psedoplastic fluid with variable viscosity in an asymmetric channel is examined. The bionic effects by means of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) are taken into account. The assumptions of long wave length and low Reynolds number are taken into account. The basic equations governing the flow are first reduced to a set of ordinary differential equation by using appropriate transformation for variables and then solve by using perturbation method. The effect of physical parameters on the pressure rise, velocity and pressure gradient are illustrated graphically. The trapping phenomenon is analyzed through stream lines. A suitable comparison has also been made as a limiting case of the considered problem.

  • The finite element method for calculating single phase transformer inductance is presented in this paper. There are three basic definitions of saturated transormer inductance. The set of nonlinear finite element equations is solved by the Newton-Raphson method which assures nearly quadratic convergence of the iteration process. The effect of perturbation of currents of this transformer is used to calculate the saturated winding inductance. This approach is used to calculate the apparent, effective and incremental inductance of single phase transformer. The apparent inductance is in good agreement with resting result. The approach enabled one to study the variation of winding inductance according to the saturation levels in the core at any operating point.

  • A transient finite element simulation is developed for the two-dimensional thermoelastic contact problem of a stationary functionally graded material between sliding layers, with frictional heat generation. Thermoelastic instability in functionally graded materials is investigated. The critical speed of functionally graded material coating disk is larger than that of the conventional steel disk. The effect of the nonhomogeneity parameter in functionally graded material is also investigated. The results show that functionally gradient materials restrain the growth of perturbation and delay the contact separation.

  • Dynamic characteristics are investigated when a nonlinear system showing periodic and chaotic responses under harmonic excitation is exposed to random perturbation. About two well potential problem, probability of homoclinic bifurcation is estimated using stochastic generalized Meinikov process and quantitive characteristics are investigated by calculation of Lyapunov exponent. Critical excitaion is calculated by various assumptions about Gaussian Melnikov process. To verify the phenomenon graphically Fokker-Planck equation is solved numerically and the original nonlinear equation is numerically simulated. Numerical solution of Fokker-Planck equation is calculated on Poincare section and noise induced chaos is studied by solving the eigenvalue problem of discretized probability density function.

  • Stochastic response of systems to random excitation can be estimated by direct integration methods in the time domain such as the stochastic central difference method (SCDM). In this paper, the SCDM is applied to compute the variance and covariance in response of linear and nonlinear structures subjected to random excitation. The accuracy of the SCDM is assessed using two-DOF systems with both deterministic and random material properties excited by white noise. For the former case, closed-form solutions can be obtained. Numerical results also are presented for a simply supported geometrically nonlinear beam. The stiffness of this beam is modeled as a random field, and the beam is idealized by the stochastic finite element method. A perturbation technique is applied to formulate the equations of motion of the system, and the dynamic structural response statistics are obtained in a time domain analysis. The effect of variations in structural parameters and the numerical stability of the SCDM also are examined.

  • The objective of this study was to examine the effect of repair mortar on the dynamic properties such as natural frequencies, mode shape and damping ratios of two story single span scale reinforced concrete building. To this end, two story single span scale reinforced concrete building having dimensions of 150 cm (width), 150 cm (length) and 135 cm (height) was constructed. Workmanship defects such as separation of material, faulty vibration application and bad gradation of the structure were properly evaluated. Dynamic properties of damaged structure were experimentally determined using Operational Modal Analysis (OMA). Detected defects in the structure were fixed by plastering with repair mortar. Dynamic properties of repaired structure were reevaluated by using the OMA method. Finite element software called Abaqus was used to numerically determine dynamic properties of the structure. Structure modeled as solid was subjected to Linear Perturbation Frequency Method. The changes in dynamic properties of structure after the repair process were comparatively studied by evaluating experimental and numerical results.

  • The initial condition should be consistent with real reactor core state for the simulation of the core transient. The initial xenon distribution, which cad not be measured in the core, has a significant effect on the transient with xenon dynamics of PWR. In the simulation of the transient stating from non-equilibrium xenon state, the accurate initialization of the non-equilibrium xenon distribution is essential to predict the core transient behavior. In this study, the xenon initialization method to predict the core transient more accurately was developed through the first-order perturbation theory of the relationship between simulated power and measured power distribution and verified by the application of the simulation for a startup test of Yonggwang Unit 3.

  • The line-of-sight component in the relative motion of galaxy pairs sources the redshift space distortion (RSD) in galaxy surveys. By knowing the probability density function (PDF) of pair-wise motions and projecting it to the line-of-sight direction, one can compute the RSD effect precisely. I present the pair-velocity PDF of dark matter and galaxies in the Horizon-run 4 simulation. I also derive a model motivated by the perturbation theory which fits the results fairly well. I also discuss the application of the model in constraining the cosmology.

  • In this article, the effect of different geometrical, materials and load parameters on the transient response of axisymmetric viscoelastic functionally graded annular plates with different boundary conditions are studied. The behavior of the plate is assumed the elastic in bulk and viscoelastic in shear with the standard linear solid model. Also, the graded properties vary through the thickness according to a power law function. Three types of mostly applied transient loading, i.e., step, impulse, and harmonic with different load distribution respect to radius coordinate are examined. The motion equations and the corresponding boundary conditions are extracted by applying the first order shear deformation theory which are three coupled partial differential equations with variable coefficients. The resulting motion equations are solved analytically using the perturbation technique and the generalized Fourier series. The sensitivity of the response to the graded indexes, different transverse loads, aspect ratios, boundary conditions and the material properties are investigated too. The results are compared with the finite element analysis.
