  • Permeable block pavement systems are widely used to relieve the flood and enhance water circulation. However, domestic design method has not yet been established well. Although AASHTO 93 flexible pavement design method is applied as a structural design method outside the country, there is a lack of information on layer coefficient of the permeable pavement materials, which makes it difficult to apply the design to various materials. Therefore, in this study, a method of calculating the layer coefficient of permeable block pavement materials by plate load test was presented and the layer coefficient of a permeable block pavement in a testbed was evaluated. Overall, calculated layer coefficient of open graded aggregate and permeable block pavement surface layer were similar to those of the conventional values. The presented method may be used to evaluate layer coefficients of permeable block pavements for design.

  • Most of the roads are paved with impermeable materials such as asphalt concrete and cement concrete, and in the event of heavy rainfall, rainwater directly flows into river through a drainage hole on the pavement surface. This large quantity of rainwater directly spilled into the river frequently leads to the flooding of urban streams, damaging lowlands and the lower reaches of a river. In recent years there has been a great deal of ongoing research concerning water permeability and drainage in pavements. Accordingly, in this research, a porous polymer concrete was developed for permeable pavement by using unsaturated polyester resin as a binder, recycled aggregate as coarse aggregate, fly ash and blast furnace slag as filler, and its physical and mechanical properties were investigated. Also, 3 types of permeable polymer block by optimum mix design were developed and rainfall runoff reduction effects by permeability pavement using permeable polymer block were analyzed based on hydraulic experimental model. The infiltration volume, infiltration ratio, runoff initial time and runoff volume in permeability pavement with permeable polymer block of $300{\times}300{\times}80$ mm were evaluated for 50, 100 and 200mm/hr rainfall intensity.

  • The increase of impermeable area ratio is causing hydrologic cycle problems in urban areas and groundwater depletion in rural areas, permeable pavements are getting attention to expand permeable areas. The performance of the permeable concrete block pavement, which is part of the permeable pavement, is greatly affected by the porosity. In addition, the permeability coefficient is a major factor when designing permeable concrete block pavement. Existing porosity and permeability test methods have problems such as uneconomical or poor field applicability. The object of this study was to develop a methodology for evaluating porosity and permeability coefficient using a surface image of a permeable concrete block. Specimens are manufactured with various porosity ranges and porosity and permeability tests are performed. After surface image preprocessing, normalization and binarization methods were compared. Through this, the method with the highest correlation with the lab test result was determined. From the results, the PDR (pore determined ratio) was obtained. Simple linear regression analysis is performed with PDR and lab test results. The results showed a high correlation of R2 more than 0.8, and the errors were also low.

  • This study aims to measure and to analyze the thermal environment characteristics of the various permeable pavement materials such as grass pavement (GREEN BLOCK PARK), stone and grass pavement (GREEN BLOCK STEP), stone pavement (GREEN BLOCK MOSAIC) and wood pavement (WOOD BLOCK) under the summer outdoor environment. The thermal environment characteristics measured in the study includes the changes of surface temperature during the day, changes of the temperature on each pavement layer, and long and short wave radiation of each pavement surface. The experimental condition is based on the data on the hottest temperature (August 5, 2005, $34.0^{\circ}C$) of the you. Some of main findings are: 1) The heat environment was worse on the wood pavements than on the stone pavement. This is mainly due to the low albedo of the wood pavements (0.37) while the albedo value of stone pavements is 0.41. Small heat capacity of the wood pavements also contributes to this difference. 2) The heat environment was worse on the stone pavements than on the turf pavements. This was mainly due to the evapotranspiration of the plant growth layer of the turf pavements. 3) The peak surface temperature was the highest on the wood pavements ($56.1^{\circ}C$). The peak surface temperatures on the stone pavements, the stone-grass pavements and the grass pavements were $43.1^{\circ}C,\;40.1^{\circ}C\;and\;37.9^{\circ}C$, respectively. 4) To improve the thermal environments in the urban area, it is recommended to raise the albedo of the pavements by brightening the surface color of the pavement materials. Further studies on the pavement materials and the construction methods which can enhance the continuous evapotranspiration from the pavements surface are needed.

  • The rapid expansion of buildings and paved roads increases the risk of flood disaster in an urban area. One of the solutions can be the use of permeable pavements. This study evaluated the permeability of permeable blocks used for the roadway pavement. Joint fillers and mat sands of the investigated blocks met the corresponding standards. The flexural strength of the blocks was 5.29 MPa to meet these standards. Based on interior permeability test results after pollution, the four products evaluated were categorized into the following three levels: One for the $1^{st}$ level, one for the $2^{nd}$ level and two for the $3^{rd}$ level. From the field permeability test and pervious concrete infiltration test results nine months after their construction, all the products except one passed the quality standards of 0.1 mm/s.

  • This study involves the development of a Hwangto permeable block for rainwater storage tanks. The permeable products that form continuous voids between Hwangto binders and aggregates are fine milled slag powder, which is an industrial by-product generated during the production of Hwangto and iron, and ferro nickel slag. The properties of Hwangto permeable blocks were studied using recycled resource aggregates. The target quality is based on KSF 2394. The Hwangto permeable block for a rainwater storage tank is made of water-permeable material, and the permeability of the Hwangto permeable block itself is 0.1mm/sec or higher, with a physical performance of over 5.0MPa in flexural strength and over 20.0MPa in compressive strength. The physical properties of Hwangto permeable block for rainwater storage tanks were researched and developed. In order to prevent flooding due to heavy rain in summer and the urban heat island phenomenon due to depletion of ground water, continuous pores are formed in the block to secure a permeability function to prevent rainwater from accumulating in the pavement of the floor, and to prevent slippage for comfortable and safe storage.

  • In the recent 2017 annual average fine dust concentration (PM2.5) statistics released by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Korea has a high concentration of 25.14㎍/m3, which is about twice the average of 12.5㎍/m3 in OECD countries. Fine dust (PM2.5) is the main source of secondary pollutant production by the reaction of primary pollutants emitted from automobiles and thermal power plants, mainly composed of sulfates, nitrates, and organic carbon. The permeable block is an eco-friendly product that prevents rainwater from collecting on the surface of the road because it does not penetrate the groundwater properly, and is widely constructed on sidewalks or parking lots to recharge groundwater in case of rain. In addition, the pavement of the permeable block is a fundamental solution to reduce pollution by preventing rainwater from flowing into the stream, and it also has the advantage of easy replacement as well as low replacement costs. Therefore, this study was a basic experiment to produce permeable blocks mixed with TiO2 and diatomite to improve indoor air quality, and intended to analyze the flexural strength and compressive strength of permeable blocks mixed with TiO2.

  • Korea has many problems due to the asphalt pavement or impermeable pavement. Many methods are being implemented to improve water circulation. Among them, permeable packaging materials are used. However, existing permeable packaging materials have a problem of causing efflorescence and clogging the pores. The pores of the permeable packing material are clogged and the permeability is lost. This leads to economic problems and product problems. The purpose of this study was to develop a block to prevent efflorescence.

  • Since 1960, Korea the town center was developed intensively due to rapid industrial development. As a result of the development, the population was concentrated in urban areas and the green area was decreased. Due to the decrease of the green area, the circulation system of the rainwater was changed, hence the rainwater was not introduced into the groundwater., On the other hand, the water on the surface of the road was changed into the water for flowing to the river and evaporation. The changes in the water flow cause many problems, and the depletion of the groundwater does not create an environment in which microorganisms and plants can live. in Korea, permeable pavement construction is increased to solve these problems, but existing pavement blocks have many problems. The pores of the permeable block are clogged due to the accumulation of dust or whitening phenomenon, and the permeability is lost. In this study, the solution of the problems of existing permeable block were suggested by using polymer and artificial permeable pipe, and strength, permeability and service life are increased, The relationship between the substitution rate of the polymer and the mixing ratio of the artificial permeable pipe was analyzed.

  • This study aims to measure and to analyze the characteristics of thermal environment of the various permeable pavement materials such as a break stone pavement (Green block cubic), soil protection pavement (Soil tector), soil cement pavement and ceramic brick pavement under the summer outdoor environment. The thermal environment characteristics measured in the study includes the changes of surface temperature during the day, and long and short wave radiation of each pavement surface. The experimental condition is based on the data on the hottest temperature (August 9, 2006, $37.1^{\circ}C$) of the year. The albedo was the highest on the break stone pavement(0.8) from 12:00 to 14:00. The albedo of the ceramic brick pavement, a soil tector pavement and soil cement pavement were 0.35, 0.29 and 0.27 from 12:00 to 14:00, respectively. The peak surface temperature and long wave radiation was the highest on the soil protection pavements($56.6^{\circ}C$/627 W/$m^2$). The peak surface temperatures and long wave radiation on the ceramic brick pavement, a stone brick pavement and soil cement pavement were $51.7^{\circ}C$/627 W/$m^2$, $48.8^{\circ}C$/607 W/$m^2$ and $45.9^{\circ}C$/582 W/$m^2$, respectively. The heat environment was better on the break stone pavement than on the other pavements. This is mainly due to the high albedo of the break stone pavement(0.8) while the albedo value of a ceramic brick pavement, a soil tactor pavement and soil cement pavement were 0.35. 0.29 and 0.27. Large heat capacity($2,629kJ/m^3{\cdot}K$) of the stone brick pavements also contributes to this difference. The heat environment was better on the soil cement pavement than the soil tector pavement. This is mainly due to the evaporation of the soil cement pavement while the active evaporation of the soil tactor pavement was not continued after two days from the rainfall event. To improve the thermal environments in the urban area, it is recommended to raise the albedo of the pavements by brightening the surface color of the pavement materials. Further studies on the pavement materials and the construction methods which can enhance the continuous evapotranspiration from the pavements surface are needed.
