  • This paper proposes a low-cost power converter for micro wind turbine systems using permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSG). The proposed converter consists of a two-leg three-phase PWM inverter for the generator control and a single-phase half-bridge PWM converter which is connected to the utility grid. For the two separate DC-link voltages, a balancing control is added and the adverse effect of the DC-link voltage ripples on the inverter output voltage is compensated. The control performance of the proposed converter topology for the micro wind turbine system is shown by the simulation results using PSIM software.

  • The power quality of wind energy becomes more and more important in connecting wind-farms to the grid, especially weak grid. This paper presents the simulation of a wind farm of a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) and a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG). Flicker mitigation is performed by using PMSG as a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) to regulate the voltage at the point of common coupling (PCC). A benefit of the measure is that integrating two function of to control the active power flow and to reduce the voltage flicker in a wind farm. Simulation results show that controlling PMSG is an effective and economic measure in reducing the flicker during continuous operation of grid connected wind turbines regardless of short circuit capacity ratio, turbulence intensity and grid impedance angle.

  • In this paper, model of the axial-flux permanent magnet synchronous generator (AFPMSG) having arc-shaped trapezoidal permanent magnets (PM) is presented. The proposed model reduces the cogging torque and torque ripple, at the expense of lowering the average output torque. Optimization of the proposed model is performed by considering the asymmetric overhang configuration of the PMs, as to make the output torque of the proposed model competitive with the conventional model. The time stepped 3D finite element analysis (FEA) is performed for the comparative analysis. It is demonstrated that the torque ripple of the optimized model is highly reduced as well as average output torque is increased.

  • This paper deals with Wound Rotor Synchronous Motor (WRSM) purposely designed for Integrated Starter and Generator (ISG) installed in 42V automotive electrical system. Not only design objective and specifications of WRSM, but its adaptive design to minimize torque ripple and back-EMF Total Harmonics Distortion (THD) are considered. Furthermore, design characteristics of designed prototype have been investigated numerically in terms of torque, back EMF, loss, and efficiency, which are verified by performance comparison with Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine based on Finite Element Analysis (FEA).

  • This paper deals with a wound-field synchronous machines(WFSM), with an electromagnet on its salient rotor, as an alternative to a permanent magnet in the rotor. We then examine the power performance characteristics, loss characteristics, V-curves and large short-circuit ratios for a large-scale synchronous generator, considering the leading and lagging operations, based on the finite-element method. We predict the performance of a 100MVA-class generator based on the operating range for a constant short-circuit ratio. At the last, We compared with the electromagnetic characteristics of three model according to number of slots.

  • This paper presents the development of 10 kW permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) for small hydropower plants considering flow rates and net head. The initial and detailed design are determined using a load distribution method (LDM) which is a well-known method for designing an electric machine and a 2D-FEA which is performed for more accurate analysis of PMSG. The characteristic analysis results of proposed model with straight line magnet are satisfied with the initial model with curved magnet. Finally, the analysis and the design results are confirmed by the experimental results.

  • This paper describes a real-time hardware simulator for a grid-tied Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) wind power system, which consists of an anemometer, a data logger, a motor-generator set with vector drive, and a back-to-back power converter with a digital signal processor (DSP) controller. The anemometer measures real wind speed, and the data is sent to the data logger to calculate the turbine torque. The calculated torque is sent to the vector drive for the induction motor after it is scaled down to the rated simulator power. The motor generates the mechanical power for the PMSG, and the generated electrical power is connected to the grid through a back-to-back converter. The generator-side converter in a back-to-back converter operates in current control mode to track the maximum power point at the given wind speed. The grid-side converter operates to control the direct current link voltage and to correct the power factor. The developed simulator can be used to analyze various mechanical and electrical characteristics of a grid-tied PMSG wind power system. It can also be utilized to educate students or engineers on the operation of grid-tied PMSG wind power system.

  • Model predictive direct power control (MPDPC) is a widely recognized high-performance control strategy for a three-phase grid-connected pulse width modulation (PWM) rectifier. Unlike those of conventional grid-connected PWM rectifiers, the active and reactive powers of permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG)-connected PWM rectifiers, which are used in electromagnetic transmitters, cannot be calculated as the product of voltage and current because the back electromotive force (EMF) of the generator cannot be measured directly. In this study, the predictive power model of the rectifier is obtained by analyzing the relationship among flux, back EMF, active/reactive power, converter voltage, and stator current of the generator. The concept of duty cycle control in the proposed MPDPC is introduced by allocating a fraction of the control period for a nonzero vector and rest time for a zero vector. When nonzero vectors and their duration in the predefined cost function are simultaneously evaluated, the global power ripple minimization is obtained. Simulation and experimental results prove that the proposed MPDPC strategy with duty cycle control for the PMSG-connected PWM rectifier can achieve better control performance than the conventional MPDPC-SVM with grid-connected PWM rectifier.

  • The wind generators have been installed with high output power to increase the energy production and efficiency. Hence, Optimal design of the direct-driven PM wind generator, coupled with F.E.M(Finite Element Method) and Genetic Algorithm(GA), has been performed to maximize the Annual Energy Production(AEP) over the whole wind speed characterized by the statistical model of wind speed distribution. Particularly, the parallel computing via internet web service has been applied to loose excessive computing times for optimization. The results of the optimal design of Surface-Mounted Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator(SPMSG) are compared with each other candidates to verify the usefulness of the maximizing AEP model.
