This paper describes dual inverter drive for a fractional-slot concentrated winding permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM). PMSMs are widely used in many applications from small servo motors to few megawatts generators thanks to its high efficiency and torque density. Especially, fractional-slot concentrated winding PMSM is very popular in the applications where wide operation range is required because it shows very wide constant power speed ratios. High speed operation, however, requires lots of negative daxis current for reducing back-EMF regardless of output torque. Field weakening current does not contribute to the torque generation in surface mounted PMSM case and causes inverter and copper loss. To reduce the losses from field weakening current, this paper proposes PMSM with split stator and parallel dual inverter drive. Proposed parallel dual inverter drive reduces back-EMF and enables efficient drive at high speed and light load situation. Control strategy of proposed dual inverter system is established through loss analysis and simulation. Proposed concept is verified with practical experiment.

The development of modern high-energy magnet materials has allowed the replacement of field coils in many different types of electromagnetic energy conversion machines. As well, the linear synchronous motor has recently been proposed for linear motion with high efficiency and thrust. Thus, this paper presents an analytical solution for the high thrust and cost reduction of the Iron-Cored Permanent Magnet Linear Synchronous Motor (PMLSM) considering magnetization arrays and geometry. Hence, the superior utilization points in each of the magnetization arrays are provided by the height ratio of the magnet/air-gap and magnet/winding coil, etc. In formulation, the space harmonic method in analytical solutions and the generalized 2-D tensor finite element analysis can be used to evaluate force components in magneto static devices including the magnetostrictive phenomenon.

Permanent magnet (PM) motors that employ rare-earth magnets containing dysprosium (Dy) are used in electric and hybrid electric vehicles. However, it is desirable to reduce the amount of Dy used since it is expensive. This study investigates the rotor structure of a PM synchronous motor with a Dy-free rare-earth magnet. Flux barrier shapes and PM thicknesses that enhance the irreversible demagnetization are investigated. In addition, a rotor structure that improves the irreversible demagnetization is proposed. We demonstrate that the proposed rotor structure without Dy improves the irreversible demagnetization.
The Slotless Permanet-magnet linear synchronous motors (PMLSM) have been developed for factory automation, transportation applications, wafer steppers, conveyance system, and so on[1]. The current analysis and design are treated in air-cored PMLSM. The main purpose of this paper is to provide a general design and analysis framework for the iron-cored linear permanent-magnet machines. Based on field solution using two dimensional analytical technique the magnetic field required magnet volume size, optimal winding thickness size, winding flux linkage and thrust will be discussed.
Newly proposed RG-MADS (Randomly Guided Mesh Adaptive Direct Search) has been applied to the optimal design of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (IPMSM) which has the distinctive features of magnetic saturation. RG-MADS, advanced from classical MADS algorithm, has the superiority in computational time and reliable convergence accuracy to the optimal solution, thus it is appropriate to the optimal design of IPMSM coupled with time-consuming Finite Element Analysis (FEA), necessary to the nonlinear magnetic application for better accuracy. Effectiveness of RG-MADS has been verified through the well-known benchmark-functions beforehand. In addition, the proposed RG-MADS has been applied to the optimal design of IPMSM aiming at maximizing the Maximum Torque Per Ampere (MTPA), which is regarded as representative design goal of IPMSM.
This paper presents air-gap control according to Y and Delta connections of a double-sided air-gap permanent magnet synchronous motor (DA-PMSM) with independent three-phase structure. In particular, the DA-PMSM used in this study can be applied to low-speed and high-torque applications, such as wind turbines, tidal power generations, and electric propulsion ships, because of its modular stators and a rotor with numerous permanent magnets. Unlike conventional three-phase machines, the DA-PMSM has a symmetrical configuration with double-sided air-gap. Therefore, Y/Delta winding connections and serial/parallel configurations between stator modules are possible. To identify the DA-PMSM operating characteristics, mathematical modeling is analyzed according to the Y/Delta connections. Moreover, air-gap control performances by applying the winding connection methods are verified through experimental results.
Recent advancements of permanent magnet (PM) materials and solid-state devices have contributed to a substantial performance improvement of permanent magnet machines. Owing to the rare-earth PMs, these motors have higher efficiency, power factor, output power per mass and volume, and better dynamic performance than induction motors without sacrificing reliability. Not surprisingly, they are continuously receiving serious considerations for a variety of automotive and propulsion applications. An electric vehicle (EV) requires a high-effficient propulsion system having a wide operating range and a capability of generating a high peak torque for short durations. The improvement of torque-speed performance for these systems is consequently very important, and researches in various aspects are therefore being actively pursued. A great emphasis has been placed on the efficiency and optimal utilization of PM machines. This requires attention to many aspects related to the machine design and overall performance. In this respect, the prediction of iron losses is particularly indispensable and challenging, especially for drives with a deep field-weakening range. The objective of this paper is to present iron loss estimations of a PM motor over a wide speed range. As aforementioned, in EV applications core losses can be significant during high-speed operation and it is imperative to evaluate these losses accurately and take them into consideration during the motor design stage. In this investigation, the losses are predicted by using an analytical model and a 2D time-stepped finite element method (FEM). The results from different analytical approaches are compared with the FEM computations. The validity of each model is then evaluated by these comparisons.
This paper deals with a wound-field synchronous machines(WFSM), with an electromagnet on its salient rotor, as an alternative to a permanent magnet in the rotor. We then examine the power performance characteristics, loss characteristics, V-curves and large short-circuit ratios for a large-scale synchronous generator, considering the leading and lagging operations, based on the finite-element method. We predict the performance of a 100MVA-class generator based on the operating range for a constant short-circuit ratio. At the last, We compared with the electromagnetic characteristics of three model according to number of slots.

If two or more Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) can be controlled by one inverter, a train can be driven by less energy than the present Induction Motor (IM) drive system. First, this paper proposes a method for simulating the movement of wheels and a vehicle to develop a control method. Next, a method is presented for controlling two or more PMSMs by one inverter.
