  • The selection of optimum parameters in electromagnetic design usually requires optimization of multimodal, non linear functions. This leads to extensive calculations which pose a huge inconvenience in the design process. This paper proposes a novel algorithm for dealing efficiently with this issue. Through the use of contour line concept coupled with Kriging, the algorithm finds out all the peaks in the problem domain with as few function calls as possible. The proposed algorithm is applied to the magnet shape optimization of an axial flux permanent magnet synchronous machine and the cogging torque was reduced to 79.8% of the initial one.

A Nonlinear Sliding Mode Controller for IPMSM Drives with an Adaptive Gain Tuning Rule

  • This paper presents a nonlinear sliding mode control (SMC) scheme with a variable damping ratio for interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs). First, a nonlinear sliding surface whose parameters change continuously with time is designed. Actually, the proposed SMC has the ability to reduce the settling time without an overshoot by giving a low damping ratio at the initial time and a high damping ratio as the output reaches the desired setpoint. At the same time, it enables a fast convergence in finite time and eliminates the singularity problem with the upper bound of an uncertain term, which cannot be measured in practice, by using a simple adaptation law. To improve the efficiency of a system in the constant torque region, the control system incorporates the maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) algorithm. The stability of the nonlinear sliding surface is guaranteed by Lyapunov stability theory. Moreover, a simple sliding mode observer is used to estimate the load torque and system uncertainties. The effectiveness of the proposed nonlinear SMC scheme is verified using comparative experimental results of the linear SMC scheme when the speed reference and load torque change under system uncertainties. From these experimental results, the proposed nonlinear SMC method reveals a faster transient response, smaller steady-state speed error, and less sensitivity to system uncertainties than the linear SMC method.

  • One of the most important technical improvement required for ropeless elevator system to become practical is the improvements in overall system efficiency. Moreover, the predominant drawback of permanent magnet (PM) linear synchronous motor (LSM) is large detent force. Therefore, for the given volume the selection of high power density PM-LSM with low detent force is very imperative. In this paper, we will investigate the characteristics of thrust and detent force of PM-LSM under different motor topology structure. Finally, the long stator double-sided iron core type PM-LSM with fractional slot winding is the best choice for the ropeless elevator system.

  • Effect of coulomb friction and backlash on the single loop posit ion control has been studied for the precision position control. We studied and showed the limit cycle on the single loop system which used a ball screw that had the backlash. Also, We made an inner loop with a classical velocity and torque controller which was forcing the $i_d$ current to be zero by using a permanent-magnet synchronous motor and composed the outer loop with linear sensor for sensing a position of the loader. We have been shown a good result by using the dual loop through numerical simulation method.

  • This paper presents the design schemes for the improvement of force characteristics in Controlled permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (CPMLSM). The dependence of motor performance on various design schemes, such as the slot shapes, magnetizing patterns of PM and skewing, have been investigated in detail by using FEM and experiment. From this study, it is known that in the various design schemes, skewing is most efficient in the aspects of force characteristic, efficiency and force density.

  • This paper proposes a sensorless vector control of interior permanent magnet synchronous motor(IPMSM) using a Luenberger observer. Linearizeng the motor model, we can construct the linear reduced order observer for estimating rotor position and disturbance torque. The validity of the proposed scheme is confirmed by various response characteristics.

  • A new calculation method for iron loss coefficients is proposed by using the Steinmetz equation from Epstein data. The hysteresis loss must have linear characteristic according to the frequency. However, the existing iron loss coefficients are defined by formula of frequency. In this case, the hysteresis loss has non-linear characteristics by frequency. So, in this paper, the iron loss coefficients were defined by a function of the magnetic flux density, and the iron loss calculation is applied for Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(IPMSM) of 600(W) and 200(W). The iron loss calculation results and the experimental results are compared according to the various materials.

  • This paper proposes inserted core type of slotless Permanent Magnet Linear Synchronous Motor(PMLSM) to improve its low thrust density. However, by inserting the core between windings of each phase, detent force is generated and it acts as thrust ripple. Furthermore, linear motors generate end effect making thrust ripple. So, this paper applies the neural network to minimize detent force and to maximize thrust. Also, sub-poles is placed at the end parts of the mover to compensate end effect. To confirm of calculation method's validity, the calculated results are compared with experimental results.

Reduction Design of End Edge Effect in Stationary Discontinuous Armature PMLSM combined with Skewed Magnets and Stair Shape Auxiliary Teeth

  • In recent years, a permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (PMLSM) has been used in various kinds of transportation applications for its relative high power density and efficiency. The general transportation system arranges the armature on the full length of transportation lines. However, when this method is applied to long distance transportation system, it causes increase of material cost and manufacturing time. Thus, in order to resolve this problem, we suggested stationary discontinuous armature PMLSM. However, the stationary discontinuous armature PMLSM contains the edges which always exist as a result of the discontinuous arrangement of the armature. These edges become a problem because the cogging force that they exert bad influences the controllability of the motor. Therefore, in this paper we proposed the combination of skewed magnets and stair shape auxiliary teeth to reduce the force by edge effect. Moreover, we analyzed the influence of the design factors by using a 3-D finite element method (FEM) simulation tool.

A Design of Optimal Interval between Armatures in Long Distance Transportation PMLSM for End Cogging Force Reduction

  • Although the permanent magnet linear synchronous motor is a motor useful for transportation systems thanks to its high speed, high acceleration and deceleration, the linear motor generally has armatures installed on the full length of the transport path. It results in the increase in material costs and manufacturing time. As a means to solve this problem a stationary discontinuous armature system is suggested. However, it involves the following two issues. The first issue is it is impossible to control the mover in the section where any armature is not installed as armatures are distributed. The second one is increasing cogging force due to the ends of the armatures. Therefore, this study aims to solve these problems by adjusting intervals between armatures to control the mover anywhere, and to design the interval between armatures optimally to minimize the end cogging force. The suitable distance was deduced. It addressed the problems and showed suitability for long distance transportation PMLSM.
