  • The magnetic gear, which amplifies the torque by filtering the magnetic field generated by the low-speed permanent magnet with a modulator, can exclude gear contact and can be effectively applied when there are environmental restrictions. In this paper, we discuss the magnetic force characteristics of a magnetic gear using a magnetic focusing array that replaces a general permanent magnet array magnetized in a radial direction along the circumferential direction. The torque increasing effect of the discussed array, known as an arrangement that increases the principal component by focusing a radial magnetic field, is compared with that of a general magnetic gear. In particular, in a magnetic gear using such an array, the sensitivity of torque according to variables is analyzed to see how various variables known as factors affecting torque have an effect.

  • This paper deals with the performance analysis and estimation of the electrical parameters of a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) for hydrokinetic energy conversion applications using vortex induced vibration (VIV). The analytical solutions for the magnetic fields produced by permanent magnets (PMs) and stator winding currents are obtained using a 2D polar coordinate system and a magnetic vector potential. An analytical expression for the 2D permeance is also derived, which takes into account stator skew effects. Based on these magnetic field solutions and the 2D permeance function, electrical circuit parameters such as the backemf constant and the air-gap inductance are obtained analytically. The performances of the PMSG are investigated using the estimated electrical circuit parameters and an equivalent circuit (EC). All analytical results are validated extensively using 2D finite element (FE) analyses. Experimental measurements for parameters such as the back-emf and inductance are also presented to confirm the analyses.

  • For the high speed linear motor and the transportation device at clean room, a magnetic levitation rail without contact using the repulsive force of permanent magnets was newly developed. The characteristics of repulsive and lateral forces of the magnetic levitating system using permanent magnet was studied and the devised magnetic levitating system was evaluated by analytical and experimental approaches. This system is composed of two fixed guide rails with the rare earth permanent magnet array and a moving unit which is attached two magnet pairs at each sides. Because this system was forcedly levitated by the face to face repulsive forces, levitating air gap length can be repulsive force of an auxiliary magnetic repulsion system on the center of moving unit.

  • This paper deals with the position and torque control of a toroidal type rotor which has a magnetic bearing structure. The proposed magnetic bearing structure supports the rotor by the repulsive forces of permanent magnets, and has a two degree of freedom for rotor position when the rotor is rotating. Permanent magnets and coils in the stator allow for a two degree of freedom control of the rotor position and torque generation by reacting with permanent magnets of the rotor. The executed gyro actuator has a number of poles such as five-phase permanent magnet motors and 10 stator coils for the rotor position control. In this study, the verification of the stability of the magnetic bearing was conducted using the equation of motion when the rotor was rotating, and the coil current commutation method for the position control and torque generation was studied. As a result, the feasibility of the proposed structure and control was verified by simulations of Finite Element Method (FEM) and experiments using the executed gyro actuator.

  • The magnetic suspension of a high T$\sub$c/ BipbSrCaCuO superconductor beneath toroial Permanent magnet was examined by means of an improved magneto-balancing method at 77K. Both the experimental values of the suspending position and the force exerted upon the superconducting specimen were in good agreement with those calculated from the magnetization curve of the specimen and the magnetic field map of the used permanent magnet.

  • This paper presents the development of the magnetic position sensor for servo motor. The magnetization system is designed for the sinusoidal magnetic flux density distribution from permanent magnet using 2D finite element method and Preisach model. The magnetic position sensor is composed of the permanent magnet and two Hall elements. And the algorithm calculating the rotating position is suggested by the phase difference of outputs of Hall elements.

  • Radioactive Corrosion Products (CRUD) which are generated by the neutron activation of general corrosion products at the nuclear power plant are the major source of occupational radiation exposure. Most of the CRUD has a characteristic of showing strong ferrimagnetisms. Along with the new development and production of permanent magnet (rare earth magnet) which generates much stronger magnetic field than the conventional magnet, new type of magnetic filter that can separate CRUD efficiently and eventually reduce radiation exposure of personnel at nuclear power plant is suggested. This separator consists of inner and outer magnet assemblies, coolant channel and container surrounding the outer magnet assembly. The rotational motion of the inner and outer permanent magnet assemblies surrounding the coolant channel by driving motor system produces moving alternating magnetic fields in the coolant channel. The CRUD can be separated from the coolant by the moving alternating magnetic field. This study describes the results of preliminary experiment performed with the different flow rates of coolant and rotation velocities of magnet assemblies. This new magnetic filter shows better performance results of filtering the magnetite at coolant (water). How rates, rotating velocities of magnet assemblies and particle sizes turn out to be very important design parameters.

  • In this paper, an investigation of a room temperature active magnetic regenerative refrigerator is carried out. Experimental apparatus includes two active magnetic regenerators containing 186 g of Gd spheres. Four E-type thermocouples are installed inside the Active magnetic regenerator(AMR) to observe the instantaneous temperature variation of AMR. Both warm and cold heat exchangers are designed for large temperature span. The cold heat exchanger, which separates the two AMRs, employs a copper tube with length of 80 mm and diameter of 6.35 mm. In order to minimize dead volume between the warm heat exchanger and AMRs, the warm heat exchangers are located close to the AMRs. The deionized water is used as a heat transfer fluid, and maximum 1.4 T magnetic field is supplied by Halbach array of permanent magnets. The AMR plate, which contains the warm and the cold heat exchangers and the AMRs, has reciprocating motion using a linear actuator and each AMR is alternatively magnetized and demagnetized by a Halbach array of permanent magnet. Since the gap of the Halbach array of permanent magnets is 25 mm and two warm heat exchangers have the motion through it, a compact printed circuit heat exchanger (PCHE) is used as a warm heat exchanger. A maximum no-load temperature span of 26.8 K and a maximum cooling power of 33 W are obtained from the fabricated Active Magnetic Regenerative Refrigerator (AMRR).

  • This paper deals with torque analysis of magnetic spur gear with radial magnetized permanent magnets based on analytical method. The analysis is implemented in three parts: First, on the basis of magnetic vector potential and a two-dimensional (2D) polar-coordinate system, the magnetic field solution due to permanent magnet of source gear are obtained. And by using derived magnetic field solutions, the analytical solutions for external magnetic field distribution which affects load gear are obtained. Second, by using coordinate conversion, external magnetic field which is on the primary coordinate system is converted to the secondary coordinate system. Finally, the load gear is reduced to equivalent current densities, and the torque is computed on these currents in the external field of the source magnet. These analytical results are validated by comparing with the 2-D finite element analysis (FEA).

  • Hybrid-type magnetic bearings using both permanent magnets and electromagnets have been used for rotating machinery. In the case of conventional thrust hybrid magnetic bearings supporting axial loads, radially magnetized permanent ring magnets, which have several demerits such as difficult magnetization and assembly, have been used to generate bias flux. In this study, a novel thrust hybrid magnetic bearing using an axially magnetized permanent ring magnet is presented. Because it is easy to magnetize a ring magnet in the axial direction, the segmentation of the ring magnet for magnetization is not required and the assembly process can be simplified. For verifying the performance of the proposed method, a test rig that consists of a proposed thrust magnetic bearing and variable loads is constructed. This paper presents the detailed design procedures and the obtained experimental results. The results show that the developed thrust magnetic bearing has the potential to replace conventional thrust magnetic bearings.
