In this paper, we proposes a study on air gap control for magnetic levitation of transverse flux permanent magnet electromagnets. In general, mechanical systems have a high failure rate of bearings. Bearings in particular are problematic because they have high surface wear rate and degradations. To solve this problem, replacing the bearing with a magnetic levitation electromagnet system can provide lightweight and efficiency improvements. However, precise air gap control is essential to control the magnetic levitation electromagnet system. Therefore, in this paper, we identify the instable cause of gap control through a mathematical modeling and verify through experiment a control algorithm that can use compensation.
This paper deals with the position and torque control of a toroidal type rotor which has a magnetic bearing structure. The proposed magnetic bearing structure supports the rotor by the repulsive forces of permanent magnets, and has a two degree of freedom for rotor position when the rotor is rotating. Permanent magnets and coils in the stator allow for a two degree of freedom control of the rotor position and torque generation by reacting with permanent magnets of the rotor. The executed gyro actuator has a number of poles such as five-phase permanent magnet motors and 10 stator coils for the rotor position control. In this study, the verification of the stability of the magnetic bearing was conducted using the equation of motion when the rotor was rotating, and the coil current commutation method for the position control and torque generation was studied. As a result, the feasibility of the proposed structure and control was verified by simulations of Finite Element Method (FEM) and experiments using the executed gyro actuator.
In this paper, we propose a method for suppressing shaft voltage by modifying the rotor shape and the permanent magnets in interior permanent magnet type high voltage motors. The shaft voltage, which adversely affects the bearing by occurring bearing current, is induced by parasitic components and the leakage flux in motor-driven systems as well as inherent linkage flux between main magnetic flux and shaft according to rotor configuration. Thus, shaft voltage should be analyzed and considered under inverter-driven and non-inverter-driven conditions because inherent linkage flux can analyze under non-inverter-driven condition. In this study, we designed re-arrangement magnet and re-structuring rotor to minimize the shaft voltage. In addition, we optimized the proposed models. The shaft voltage suppression effect of the designed model was validated experimentally and by comparative finite element analysis.
Maglev wind turbine generator (MWTG) technology has been widely studied due to its low loss, low maintenance cost, and high reliability. However, the dynamics of the magnetic bearing system differ fromthe those of the traditional mechanical bearing system. A horizontal axial MWTG supported with a permanent magnetic bearing is designed in this research and the radial forces and the natural frequencies of the rotor system are studied. The results show that the generatorhas a cyclical magnetic forceand an unreasonable bearing stiffness may mean that the rotor system needs to work in the resonance region; the bearing stiffness is the key factor to avoid this problem. This is the main rule of the bearing stiffness design in the MWTG, and this rule can also be used in other maglev permanent magnet motors.
This paper deals with the design of 1-kW troidal type gyro. In general, gyro can be used as magnet bearing or flywheel energy storage device. The proposed troidal type gyro is used as a flywheel energy storage device. The gyro is capable of high-speed rotation in the air. The coriolis effect is taken into account when designing the rotor of the proposed gyro. Also the repulsive power of the permanent magnet is considered while selecting the shape and the thickness of the magnet. The neodymium is used as material of the magnets in this paper. The number of magnets are selected accordingly to reduce these torque ripples because torque ripples is an important factor while designing the gyro. The designed troidal type gyro is verified through the Finite Element Method (FEM).
This paper presents a highly efficient HDD (Hard Disk Drive) spindle motor with a passive magnetic thrust bearing and a fluid dynamic journal bearing and its effectiveness is verified through experiment. It eliminates the mechanical friction loss of a thrust bearing which is around 18% of total power consumption of a 3.5' HDD spindle motor, by replacing a conventional fluid dynamic thrust bearing with a passive magnetic thrust bearing. The passive magnetic thrust bearing using permanent magnets is inherently unstable in radial direction. However, the radial fluid dynamic force of the fluid dynamic journal bearing counterbalances the radial magnetic force of magnetic thrust bearing to achieve the stability as the motor spins up. It has less or equivalent runout and less flying height than the conventional spindle motor.
For the application into a 1 kWh flywheel energy storage system(FESS), this paper presents the design scheme of radial and axial hybrid magnetic bearings which use bias fluxes generated by permanent magnets. In particular, the axial hybrid magnetic bearing is newly proposed in this paper, in which a permanent magnet is arranged in axial direction so that it can support the rotor weight as well as provide a bias flux for axial magnetic bearing. Such hybrid magnetic bearings consume very low power, compared with conventional electromagnetic bearings. In this paper, to stably support a 140 kg flywheel rotor without contact, design process is explained in detail, and magnetic circuit analysis and three-dimensional finite element analysis are carried out to determine the design parameters and predict the performance of the magnetic bearings.
A superconductor flywheel energy storage system (SFES) is an electro-mechanical battery which transforms electrical energy into mechanical energy for storage, and vice versa. A 35 kWh class SFES module was designed and constructed as part of a 100kWh/1MW class SFES composed of three 35 kWh class SFES modules. The 35 kWh class SFES is composed of a main frame, superconductor bearings, a composite flywheel, a motor/generator, electro-magnetic bearings, and a permanent magnet bearing. The high energy density composite flywheel is levitated by the permanent magnet bearing and superconductor bearings, while being spun by the motor/generator, and the electro-magnetic bearings are activated while passing through the critical speeds. Each of the main components was designed to provide maximum performance within a space-limited compact frame. The 35 kWh class SFES is designed to store 35 kWh, with a 350 kW charge/discharge capacity, in the 8,000 ~ 12,000 rpm operational speed range.
Recently, superconductor flywheel energy storage systems (SFESs) have been developed for application to a regenerative power of train, a power quality improvement, the storage of distributed power sources such as solar and wind power, and a load leveling. As the high temperature superconductor (HTS) bearings offer dynamic stability without the use of active control, accurate analysis of the HTS bearing is very important for application to SFESs. Mechanical property of a HTS bearing is the main index for evaluating the capacity of an HTS bearing and is determined by the interaction between the HTS bulks and the permanent magnet (PM) rotor. HTS bearing rotor consists of PM and iron collector and the proper dimension design of them is very important to determine a supporting characteristics. In this study, we have optimized a rotor magnet array, which depends on the limited bulk size and performed various dimension layouts for thickness of the pole pitch and iron collector. HTS bearing rotor was installed into a single axis universal test machine for a stiffness test. A hydraulic pump was used to control the amplitude and frequency of the rotor vibration. As a result, the stiffness result showed a large difference more than 30 % according to the thickness of permanent magnet and iron collector. This is closely related to the bulk stiffness controlled by flux pining area, which is limited by the total bulk dimension. Finally, the optimized HTS bearing rotor was installed into a flywheel system for a dynamic stability test. We discussed the dynamic properties of the superconductor bearing rotor and these results can be used for the optimal design of HTS bearings of the 10kWh SFESs.
