  • The 800-kW PM (permanent magnet) synchronous generator is developed as a wind power generator. The matching converter is designed to control the torque and power depending on the wind speed regime. The generator starts to generate the power at the speed of 9 rpm and the rated output is generated at the speed of 25 rpm. The rated output power of an inverter is 750 kW when the PM synchronous generator is delivering 800 kW to the inverter. The inverter is specially designed to perform the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) at the low wind speed regime that is typical wind environment in Korea. The inverter test was done with a 2 MW M-G system at KERI (Korea Electric Research Institute). The M-G set has a 2 MW motor driver and a 38:1 gear to match the speed between the motor and the PM generator. The torque simulating the wind is applied to the PM generator by a DC motor. The test results show the inverter efficiency of $94.3\%$ at the rated power generating condition. The measured values show that the MPPT algorithm is working well. Overall reliability will be verified through the long-term site test.

  • A superconductor flywheel energy storage(SFES) system is mainly act an electro-mechanical battery which transfers mechanical energy into electrical form and vice versa. SFES system consists of a pair of non-contacting High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) bearings with a very low frictional loss. But it is essential to design an efficient HTS bearing considering with rotor dynamic properties through correct calculation of stiffness in order to support a huge composite flywheel rotor with high energy storage density. Static properties of HTS bearings provide data to solve problems which may occur easily in a running system. Since stiffness to counter vibration is the main parameter in designing an HTS bearing system, we investigate HTS bearing magnetic force through static properties between the Permanent Magnet(PM) and HTS. We measured axial / radial stiffness and found bearing stiffness can be easily changed by activated vibration direction between PM and HTS bulk. These results are used to determine the optimal design for a 10 kWh SFES.

  • Metal-p-$NH_2$-Bn-DOTA (paraammionobenzyl-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid: ABDOTA) complex was synthesized and purified for bio-tagging to quantify biological target materials using laser ablation (LA)-ICP-MS. Since the preparation of a pure and stable tagging complex is the key procedure for quantification, magnetic particles were used to purify the synthesized metal-ABDOTA complex. The magnetic particles immobilized with the complex attracted to a permanent magnet, resulting in fast separation from free un-reacted metal ions in solution. Gd ions formed the metal-complex with a higher yield of 64.3% (${\pm}3.9%$ relative standard deviation (RSD)) than Y ions, 52.3% (${\pm}2.5%$ RSD), in the pH range 4-7. The complex bound to the magnetic particles was released by treatment with a strong base, of which the recovery was 81.7%. As a reference, a solid phase extraction (SPE) column packed with Chelex-100 resin was employed for separation under similar conditions and produced comparable results. The tagging technique complemented polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microarray chip sampling in LA-ICP-MS, allowing determination of small sample volumes at high throughputs. For application, immunoglobulin G (IgG) was immobilized on the pillars of PDMS microarray chips and then tagged with the prepared Gd complex. IgG could then be determined through measurement of Gd by LA-ICP-MS. A detection limit of 1.61 ng/mL (${\pm}0.75%$ RSD) for Gd was obtained.

  • The back e.m.f. of PMSM is increased as the speed is increased and it saturates the current regulator because it counteracts the available output voltage of the inverter. In the PM motor, however, the required armature terminal voltage can be reduced within the maximum output voltage of the inverter by field weakening control, in which the air gap flux is weakened by the d-axis armature current. In this paper, the field weakening control of the surface PMSM fed by a hysteresis current control led PWM inverter based on the microprocessor is presented. To show the validity of the proposed control method, the simulation and experimental results are provided.

  • LPM(Linear Pulse Motor) provide direct and precise position control of bidirectional linear motion. LPM is not subject to the same linear velocity and acceleration limitations inherent in systems converting rotary to linear motion such as lead screws, rack and pinion, belt and pulley drives. With LPM, all the thrust force generated by the motor is efficiently applied directly to the load. And speed, distance, and acceleration are easily programmed in a highly repeatable fashion. Potential industrial and application fields of LPM include PCB assembly, industrial sewing machines, automatic inspection, coil winder, medical uses, conveyer system, laser cut and trim systems, semiconductor wafer processing, OA instruments etc. This paper describes various design parameter of LPM such as magnetic ciucuit construction methods, phase number and tooth number per pole, permanent magnet and coil mmf, tooth geometries. And to solve the problems of existing control methods, in this paper, a new control method of the LPM is proposed throughout modern control theory.

  • Numerous methods are available for reducing the end-effect force of linear machines. Majority of these methods focus on redesigning the poles or slots. However, these methods require additional manufacturing cost and decrease the power density. The current paper introduces another approach to reduce the end-effect force. The new approach is a method of tuning the input phase current magnitudes individually. According to the proposed method, reduction of the end-effect force could be achieved without redesigning the poles/slots or attaching auxiliary poles/slots. The proposed method is especially applicable when the target motor is very expensive or will be used for a special mission, such as hauling army vehicles equipped with three single-phase inverters. The validity of the suggested method was exemplified by the finite element method with three-phase permanent-magnet linear synchronous motor.

  • In this paper, we present a method to improve the torque characteristic of PMSM(Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) and its hardware realization. It is based on the compensation of sinusoidal current delay caused by phase winding inductances. Since coordinate transformation is not used, simple hard-wired logic in the controller design is adopted and this scheme can eliminates the delay through the coordinate transformation. The delay components are varied according to rotation speeds, but this method can also make it possible to compensate those, dynamically. The control scheme has been verified by experiments on a 4-pole 3-phase PMSM, and the generated torques are increased at whole operation speed ranges.

  • This paper presents an experimental study for optimizing the acceleration of AC servomotor using finite jerk (the first derivative of acceleration). The acceleration optimization with finite jerk aims at generating the smooth velocity profile of AC servomotor by experimentally minimizing vibration resulted from the initial friction of servomotor. The stick-slip motion of AC servomotor induced by initial friction can result in the positional errors that are not good for high-precision devices such as the assembly robot arms to be used in a 300mm wafer or a LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) stocker system. In this paper, experiments were made by using a PM (Permanent Magnet) type AC servomotor with MMC(R) (Multi Motion Controller) programmed in Visual C++(R). The experiments have been performed for finding the optimal duration time of finite jerk in terms of the minimization of vibration displacements when both the magnitude of velocity and the allowable acceleration are given. We have compared the proposed control with the conventional control with trapezoidal velocity profile by measuring vibration displacements. The effectiveness of the proposed control has been verified in that the experimental results showed the decrease of vibration displacement by about 24%.

  • As increasing underground facilities, more effective management is needed nowadays. It is important to get an accurate information of underground facilities to manage that, so some methods of detecting location - electromagnetic induction method, ground penetration radar method, sound wave method - are used to obtain the information of underground facilities. In this study, a magnetic method to detect underground facilities was developed. In the magnetic method, underground facilities are detected by a detector and the magnetic marker which is a permanent magnet and used to marking the location by attaching underground facilities. A test field was constructed for experiment with the magnetic marker, PVC pipe, and steel pipe under ground 1.5m, and a ferromagnetic detector was used for measurement. Magnetic strengths of the magnetic marker were measured by the detector at each location in the test field, and analyzed by magnetic field analysis tool in the same condition. In the result, the underground pipes of 1.5m below were detectable within the deviation $\pm$0.2m. When For applying this method, it should be considered that ferromagnetic materials around the detector could affect a measured value.
