  • Two epistylid peritrichous ciliates collected from the littoral aquatic plants at pond in a suburb of Ulsan, Korea were identified as Epistylis plicatilis Ehrenberg, 1831 and E. hentscheli Kahl, 1935. The description was based on the observation of living specimens and protargol impregnated specimens. This study is about redescription compared with original description. These species have not been reported in Korea and their characteristics are as follows: E. plicatilis is thin, long funnel form and has compact stalk, while E. hentscheli is unsymmetrical bell form and has hollow stalk.

Two Newly Recorded Epistylid Ciliates, Epistylis chrysemydis and E. entzii (Ciliophora: Oligohymenophora: Peritrichida) in Korea (한국산 2미기록종, 원반겹가지섬모충과 술병겹가지섬모충(섬모충문: 소막충강: 주모목))

  • Two epistylid ciliates collected from the sewage treatment plant in Ulsan, Korea were identified as Epistylis chrysemydis Bishop and Jahn, 1941 and E. entzii Stiller, 1935. They were examined in vivo using Die microscope. Protargol impregnation used to reveal the infraciliature and cytological details. The improved diagnoses for these species are as followings. E. chrysemydis: peristomial lip has two bulges encircling the oral region and ciliary rows wound about one and half around peristome; one contractile vacuole located ventrally; stalk ramified hollow; membrane lies 1 and 3 are longer than membranelle 2. E. entzii: peristomial lip has one bulge encircling the oral region and ciliary rows wound about 1 and 1/4 to 1 and 1/3 around peristome; one contractile vacuole located dorsally; stalk ramified, not hollow; membrane lies 1 and 2 are longer than membranelle 3. They are new to Korean fauna.

  • Mortality and gill lesions in snakehead, Channa argus (body length range, 20.3-22.2 cm) reared in a aqua-farm in Busan, Korea, were associated with a dense bloom of Apiosoma-like ciliate, Order Petrichida. The size of parasite was $48.83{\pm}7.75{\mu}m{\times}14.29{\pm}2.66{\mu}m$. Histological examination revealed that a severe edema and collapse of the gill tissue were observed in a number of samples of snakehead. The mechanism of gill damage was likely due to physical irritation by the parasite. It is believed that this is the first report of Apiosoma-like ciliate in cultured fish in Korea.
