Micro-computed tomography analysis of changes in the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone proper induced by occlusal hypofunction of rat molars

  • Objective: To three-dimensionally elucidate the effects of occlusal hypofunction on the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone proper of rat molars by micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). Methods: Occlusal function in the molar area was restricted by attaching an anterior bite plate on the maxillary incisors and a metal cap on the mandibular incisors of 5-week-old male Wistar rats for 1 week. The periodontal ligament space and alveolar bone proper around roots of the mandibular first molar were assessed by histology and micro-CT. Results: The periodontal ligament space was narrower and the alveolar bone proper was sparser and less continuous in the hypofunction group than in the control group. Further, both the volume of the periodontal ligament and the volumetric ratio of the alveolar bone proper to the total tissue in the region of interest were significantly lower in the hypofunction group (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Occlusal hypofunction induces atrophic changes in the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone proper of rat molars.

Effect of oral health belief and metabolic syndrome on CPITN (구강건강신념과 대사증후군이 지역사회치주치료요구지수에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives: The objective of the study is to investigate the effect of oral health belief and metabolic syndrome on CPITN. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 847 adult visitors over 20 years old in Busan from August 1 to December 31, 2011. Except incomplete answers, 776 data were analyzed by t-test, one way ANOVA, and logistic regression analysis using SPSS 20.0 program. The questionnaire comprised general characteristics of the subjects, oral health behavior, and metabolic syndrome related risk factors. Results: There was statistically significant difference of an oral health belief rating between the groups receiving oral health education. Community periodontal index had statistically significant difference depending on smoking and waist circumference. To analyze related factors of community periodontal index, multiple logistic regression analysis was performed. As the final outcome, gender, age, benefit, salience, scaling experience, experience of oral health education, and related factors and metabolic syndrome were shown to impact on significant influence (p<0.05). Conclusions: Thus, To manage the effective oral health, it is necessary to control the factors of metabolic syndrome and oral health.

Relationship between Dietary Behavior and Health-related Characteristics and Experiences of Major Oral Disease Symptoms in Adolescents (청소년의 식생활 및 건강관련 특성과 주요 구강질환증상경험과의 관련성)

  • Objectives: This study analyzed the relationship between dietary behavior and health-related characteristics and experiences of major oral disease symptoms using online raw data on adolescent health behavior. Methods: Using the raw data on 61,858 adolescents collected through the 13th Adolescent Health Behavior Online Survey, a complex samples logistic regression analysis was conducted to assess risks of major oral diseases. Results: The less one consumes sweet drinks and the more one eats vegetables per day, the less likely one is to experience symptoms of tooth decay and periodontal diseases. Undergoing scaling and oral health education help prevent major oral diseases. Brushing after school lunch prevents periodontal diseases and foul breath, and using dental floss and interdental brush also help prevent periodontal diseases. Conclusions: To minimize experiences of oral diseases during adolescent years, it is necessary to periodically scale teeth and provide knowledge regarding the personal management of dental plaque through school oral health education.

Periodontal Status in Accordance with the Daily Stress and Coping and Control Effect of Oral Health Behavior (일상스트레스와 스트레스 대처방식에 따른 치주상태와 구강건강행위 통제효과)

  • In this study, 110 adults aged 40 to 69 years were surveyed from April 28, 2016, to May 28, 2016 to analyze their periodontal status according to daily stress, coping methods, and oral health behavior. The collected data were analyzed using the t-test, one-way analysis of variance, and hierarchical multiple regression. Daily stress levels of all subjects were most frequent potential risk 64.5% of the subjects, the high risk 19.1% and 16.4% of the health group. Regarding stress coping methods, active methods recorded 2.46, passive methods recorded 2.32. Regarding oral health behaviors, subjects brushed an average of 2.45 times daily, for an average of 2 minutes. Futhermore, 69.1% of subjects brushed before bedtime and 89.1% practiced scaling. Regarding periodontal status, the O'Leary index was 73.45, gingivitis index was 1.30, an average of 2.83 quadrants possessed a periodontal pocket. The hierarchical multiple regression analysis identified, type of employment (${\beta}=-0.348$), scaling (${\beta}=-0.253$), and age (${\beta}=0.244$) as factors that influence the number of quadrants possessing a periodontal pocket. These results confirmed that the oral health behavior of scaling, but not stress levels of coping methods, strongly influenced periodontal status.

Prevalence of Oral Diseases, Socioeconomic Factors and Health Behaviors in Korean Adults - Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2005 - (구강질환과 사회경제적요인 및 보건의식행태와의 관련성 - 2005년도 국민건강영양조사를 바탕으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of socioeconomic factors and health behaviors on the prevalence of oral diseases(dental caries and periodontal disease) among Korean adults. Data from the 2005 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey was analyzed for adults aged over 19 years (n=25,215). Oral disease was defined as disease diagnosed by a dentist for the previous 12 months. Chi-square test and logistic regression analysis were used to conduct statistical analysis. The population without dental caries and periodontal diseases were used as the reference category for all analysis. The overall prevalence of annual dentist-diagnosed dental caries and periodontal diseases were 23.5% and 10.6% respectively. The relative risk of developing dental caries for graduates of middle school and lower were 1.53 times (95% CI: 1.24-1.89) more likely to develop dental caries comparing to college graduates. Low income earners were 1.23 times(95% CI: 1.01-1.49) more likely to develop dental caries than high income earners. Persons covered by national medical insurance were 1.45 times(95% CI: 1.08-1.95) more likely to develop dental caries comparing to persons covered by employee medical insurance. Compared with persons not eating snacks, the risk of developing caries in persons eating snacks once a day was 1.16(95% CI: 1.01-1.32), while those who snacked twice or more a day were 1.19(95% CI: 1.01-1.41). The relative risk of developing periodontal disease was 3.71(95% CI: 2.38-5.80) higher in older individuals than younger. In terms of education level, middle school graduates and lower were 1.54 times more likely to develop periodontal disease than college graduates. Low income earners were 1.47 times more likely to develop periodontal diseases than high income earners. Using data from a large, nationally representative sample of Korean populations, we support the hypothesis that the prevalence of oral diseases is related with socioeconomic factors and health behaviors. More intensive intervention efforts to reduce the prevalence of dental diseases are warranted in Korea.

The Relationship between Life Style and Periodontal Health Status (생활습관과 치주건강상태의 관련성)

  • This study was investigated in order to provide basic data for prevention of periodontal disease and maintenance through proper lifestyle by finding the relevance of periodontal health with lifestyle habits. Data were collected from total of 326 subjects in their forties and fifties by using questionnaire and examination of periodontal health status. Results were analyzed by using IBM SPSS Statistics 19.0. The smoking status were statistically significant to gingival index (p<0.01), pocket depth (p<0.001), and clinical attachment loss (p<0.001). Smoking amount per day were statistically significant to gingival index (p<0.05), pocket depth (p<0.01), and clinical attachment loss (p<0.001). Duration of smoking were statistically significant to gingival index (p<0.05), pocket depth (p<0.01), and clinical attachment loss (p<0.001). Drinking cycle were statistically significant to gingival index (p<0.05), and clinical attachment loss (p<0.05). It is investigated that smoking (p<0.05) influence on clinical attachment loss. Dental care institute needs to make patients be aware of the fact that excessive smoking and drinking affect the periodontal health status for prevention of periodontal disease and maintenance of oral health. Therefore systematic educational programs to stop smoking and drinking should be prepared.

SURVEY ON THE ORAL HEALTH STATUS IN CHANG-GYUNG PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN (창경국민학교 학생의 구강보건실태 조사연구 - 시범학교 계속구강건강관리사업을 위한 예비조사 -)

  • In order to collect the basic data for planning school dental health programmes, the author had examined dental health conditions of 120 males and 120 females of Changgyung Primary School children in the first grade. The percentages of persons with conditions requiring immediate attention, toothbrushing times and daily frequency, df rate, df index, dt index, ft index, it index, DMF rate, DT index, MT index, FT index, IT index, DMFT index, percentages of persons with periodontal status in every of the four categories with soft deposits, calculus, intense gingivitis, and advanced periodontal involvement were calculated and evaluated. The obtained results were as follows: 1. Persons with requiring immediate attention was 7.1% of all the examined children. 2. The df rate was 88.3%, and df index was 3.4 teeth per person. And then the DMF rate was 17.1%, while DMFT index was 0.3 teeth per person. 3. As the periodontal status, the persons with soft deposits was 90.0% of children, calculus 26.3%, intense gingivitis 0.4%, and no advanced periodontal involvement. 4. Average toothbrushing frquency was 1.2 times in a day per person. But 71.5% of toothbrushing was performed before meals, while the others after meals.

Quantitative detection of peri-implantitis bacteria using real-time PCR (Real-time PCR을 이용한 임플란트주위염 원인균의 정량적 분석)

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to analyze peri-implantitis bacteria and identify their associations with health status and health activities. Methods: Gingival sulcus fluid at the implant's periodontal pockets sampled from the participants were analyzed by multiplex real time PCR. Results: Participants had strains in the order of 100% F. nucleatum, 98.0% E. corrodens, and 96.0% P. micra, and the correlation between C. rectus and E. nodatum was high (p<0.01). Diabetic group (P. gingivalis, P. nigrescens) hypertension (P. nigrescens), group with four or more periodontal pockets (P. gingivalis, T. dentica, P. intermedia, E. nodatum, and C. rectum), smoking (P. micra, E. corrodens), drinking (T. dentola), and scaling groups (C. rectus) were found to have more strains (p<0.05). Conclusions: Representative pathogenic microorganisms detected in periodontal pockets of implants were similar to dental periodontal pockets; however there were differences in the amount and distribution of microorganisms, and they were affected by health status and health behavior.

Association between age at menarche, oral health behavior and oral health status (초경연령과 구강건강행태 및 구강건강상태와의 관련성)

  • Objectives: This study aimed to examine the association between age at menarche and two major oral diseases. Methods: Data from the 7th Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2016-2018) were used. The participants included girls and women aged 12 years and above. Thedataofa total of 7,420 participants were analyzed. Statistical analyses were performed using complex samples cross-tabulation analysis and complex samples general linear model. Results: The average age at menarche of those aged 12 to 80 years was 13.81 years. The age at menarche was found to be associated with decayed-missing-filled teeth (DMFT) (p<0.05). When the age at menarche was nine years, DMFT was 4.20 when it was 19 years, DMFT was 10.80. The age at menarche was found to be associated with periodontal tissue state (p<0.05). The group with early menarche age had healthier periodontal tissues (17.1%), whereas the group with late menarche age had more unhealthy periodontal tissues (17.9%) (p<0.001). Conclusions: The age at menarche was associated with two major oral diseases. Therefore, it is necessary to provide women with oral hygiene care and oral health education to prevent major oral diseases before their secondary sex characteristics appear.

Effects of mouth rinsing with foam vitamins and its intake on reduction in oral microorganisms (발포비타민을 이용한 구강세정 및 섭취가 구강내 치주질환 유발 세균 감소에 미치는 효과 비교)

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to examine the subjects' oral health status and changes in the oral environment after mouthwash with effervescent Vitamin C and its intake and to understand the impact on changes in the number of bacteria causing periodontal diseases in the oral cavity based on the oral health status and oral environmental condition. Methods: After obtaining approval from the Institutional Review Board of D-University, 45 people (24 in an experimental group and 21 in a control group) who participated in the oral health program were selected, among visitors of the Clinical Dental Hygienics Laboratory of D. University in B. Results: Based on the subjects' periodontal health status, the number of bacteria causing periodontal diseases in the oral cavity decreased in both experimental and control groups before and after the experiment. However, in the experimental group, it was significant when the Bleeding on Probing(BOP) level was below average, and Calculus index(CAL) was above average, in Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and the red complex. It was also significant when CAL was above average in the orange complex in the control group. Regarding bacterial changes in periodontal diseases based on the subjects' oral environmental condition, there was a significant change in the Adenosine Tri Phosphate (ATP : intraoral contaminants test) test in the oral cavity in A. actinomycetemcomitans and the red complex in the experimental group and in the O'Leary index in the control group. Further, there was a significant change in the orange complex in the ATP test in the experimental group. Conclusions: A comprehensive analysis of the results revealed that the oral health care program for dental hygiene decreased the number of bacteria causing periodontal diseases in the oral cavity in both experimental and control groups.
