A Technique for Reducing the Size of Microwave Amplifiers using Spiral-Shaped Defected Ground Structure (맴돌이형 결함접지구조를 이용한 마이크로파 증폭기의 소형화 방법)

  • A new method to reduce the size of microwave amplifiers spiral-shaped defected ground structure(Spiral-DGS) is proposed. A microstrip line having Spiral-DGS on the ground plane produces increased slow-wave factor and electrical length for the fixed physical length. In addition, it provides an excellent rejection characteristic for a finite frequency band like band rejection filters. The rejection band is used for rejecting harmonic components of amplifiers. The reduced microstrip line lengths in matching networks by Spiral-DGS are 39 % and 44 % of the original ones in input and output matching networks, respectively. It is shown that the measured S-parameters of the reduced amplifier agree well with those of the original amplifier. The measured second harmonic of the reduced amplifier is much less than that of the original amplifier by at least 10 dB. The same technique is applied to reject the third harmonic using the proper Spiral-DGS for the third harmonic frequency. The measured third harmonic is smaller than that of the original amplifier by 25 dB.

Voltage-Controlled Artificial Transmission Line Employing Periodically Loaded Diodes for Application to On-Chip Matching Components on MMIC (MMIC용 온칩 정합 소자에의 응용을 위한 주기적 배열 다이오드 구조를 이용한 전압 제어형 전송 선로)

  • In this paper, we propose VATL(Voltage-controlled Artificial Transmission Line) employing periodically loaded diodes for application to on-chip matching components on MMIC. Compared with conventional microstrip line, the VATL showed a much shorter wave length due to periodic capacitance of diodes, and the characteristic impedance of the VATL was easily controlled bγ changing supplied voltage. Concretely, the characteristic impedance of the VATL was changed from $80{\sim}20{\Omega}$ in a range of $0{\sim}1.05V$ and the VATL showed a wavelength of 1.5mm at 20GHz, while conventional microstrip line showed a wavelength of 5.3mm at the same frequency. Using the VATL, a ${\lambda}/4$ impedance transformer was fabricated on GaAs MMIC for application to on-chip matching components on MMIC. Using the ${\lambda}/4$ impedance transformer made it possible to perform impedance matching between RF components with various characteristic impedance of $30{\sim}100{\Omega}$ by adjusting applied Voltage.

Diurnal Effect Compensation Algorithm for a Backup and Substitute Navigation System of GPS (GPS 백업 및 대체 항법을 위한 지상파 신호의 일변효과 보상 방안)

  • In this paper, we describe a compensation method of diurnal effect which is one of the factors giving large effect on the performance when using ground-wave signals like Loran-C for a backup and substitute navigation system of global satellite navigation system such as GPS, and currently many researches of the topics are doing in USA and in Europe. In order to compensate diurnal effect, we find periodic frequency components by using the Least Square Spectral Analysis (LSSA) method at first and then compensate the effect by subtracting the estimated compensation signal, obtained by using the estimated amplitude and phase of the individual frequency component, from the original signal. In this paper, we propose a simple compensation algorithm and analysis the performance through simulations. From the results, it is observed that the amplitude and phase can be estimated with under 5 % and 0.17 % in a somewhat poor receiving situation with 0 dB Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR). Also, we analyze the obtainable performance improvement after compensation by using the measured Loran-C data. From the results, it is observed that we can get about 22 % performance improvement when a moving average with 5 minutes interval is employed.

  • The periodic square wave (PSW) model was successfully applied to the optimal design of a batch-storage network. The network structure can cover any type of batch production, distribution and inventory system, including recycle streams. Here we extend the coverage of the PSW model to multitasking semi-continuous processes as well as pure continuous and batch processes. In previous solutions obtained using the PSW model, the feedstock composition and product yield were treated as known constants. This constraint is relaxed in the present work, which treats the feedstock composition and product yield as free variables to be optimized. This modification makes it possible to deal with the pooling problem commonly encountered in oil refinery processes. Despite the greater complexity that arises when the feedstock composition and product yield are free variables, the PSW model still gives analytic lot sizing equations. The ability of the proposed method to determine the optimal plant design is demonstrated through the example of a high density polyethylene (HDPE) plant. Based on the analytical optimality results, we propose a practical process optimality measure that can be used for any kind of process. This measure facilitates direct comparison of the performance of multiple processes, and hence is a useful tool for diagnosing the status of process systems. The result that the cost of a process is proportional to the square root of average flow rate is similar to the well-known six-tenths factor rule in plant design.

Classification by Erosion Shapes and Estimation of Sea-cliff Erosion Rates through Field Survey in Dundu-ri, Anmyeondo in Korea's Western Coast (현장 조사를 통한 안면도 둔두리 해식애의 침식율 산정 및 침식형태 분류)

  • This research was carried out to classify erosion shapes and sea-cliff erosion rates were estimated through periodic field survey in Dundu-ri, Anmyeondo. Based on the results of field measurements using the datum-point, the annual sea-cliff erosion rate was estimated about 25~102cm/yr by point. The erosion rate gradually increases from spring to summer, but tends to decrease slightly in autumn. Specifically, the erosion rate between June and July indicated a rather decreasing trend, but showed a sharp increase between July and September. This was attributed to erosion that proceeds more rapidly than during other periods due to severe rainstorms in summer that had a direct impact on the study area as well as storm surges caused by hurricanes. Afterwards, the sea-cliff erosion rate gradually decreased in autumn, but reflected an increasing trend again from December to January. This was attributed to the mechanical weathering that actively progresses as bed rocks on the sea-cliff undergo repeated freezing and thawing in winter. The seacliff in Dundu-ri is divided into three types according to the erosion shape. First, Type A is observed in the sea-cliff composed of the same bed rocks and hard rock stratum. Second, Type B is found in the sea-cliff with a relatively gentler slope compared to Type A, since weathering material including soil is formed on the surface of the sea-cliff consisting of the same bed rocks and hard rock stratum. Lastly, Type C is observed in the sea-cliff where hard rock stratum is mixed with soft rock stratum. In this case, the soft rock stratum slumps and erodes first by precipitation and wave energy, followed by additional slumping of the exposed hard rock stratum.

A Study on Automatic Bridge Lantern Support for Safe Bridge Lantern Inspection (안전한 교량등 점검을 위한 자동 교량등 지지대에 관한 연구)

  • Bridge lanterns are installed on bridges or piers to signal the presence of these structures on navigational routes and navigable waters, and they fall under the category of light wave signals in Aids to Navigation. In Korea, medium to large bridges installed over major rivers and seas are equipped with bridge lanterns, which are necessary for routes frequented by ships and require periodic inspections on a monthly or multi-month basis. However, most bridge lanterns are mounted externally on bridge railings as fixed or manual rotary supports, posing a high risk of fatal falls during inspections. Furthermore, high -traffic bridges demand quick maintenance works due to complaints about traffic disruption, thus increasing work hazards. Consequently, this study introduced a tailored automatic bridge lantern support concept based on different types of bridge lantern installations, aiming for safe and rapid inspections. Additionally, the study sought to achieve full automation of the bridge lighting system by integrating it with a management program for monitoring and controlling bridge lanterns, utilizing both wired and wireless communication technologies. These findings provide foundational design data for new and refurbished bridges that will be installed in the future.

Clinical Characteristic and Respiratory Disturbance Index as Correlates of Sleep Architecture in Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndromes Diagnosed with Polysomnography (수면다원기록법으로 확진된 폐쇄성 수면무호흡증 환자의 임상특성, 그리고 호흡장애지수와 수면 구조간의 상관관계)

  • Objectives: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is common and may produce various symptoms and serious complications. A substantial number of research articles on obstructive sleep apnea syndrome have been published in Korea. However, we found such limitations as lack of sufficient sample size and lack of polysomnography-proven cases. Therefore, we aimed at studying clinical features and sleep structure in a sufficient number of Korean patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome diagnostically confirmed with polysomnography. Methods: We studied 801 subjects referred to the Division of Sleep Studies, Seoul National University Hospital, who were diagnosed as having obstructive sleep apnea syndrome with polysomnography. Subjects were excluded if they had central sleep apnea syndrome, periodic limb movement disorder, narcolepsy or REM sleep behavior disorder. Foreign patients were also excluded. First of all, we studied the clinical features of the subjects. Secondly, we compared sleep-related parameters of the study subjects with those of age/sex-matched normal values. Thirdly, correlations of respiratory disturbance index (RDI) with each of the sleep-related parameters were calculated. Results: Among the 801 subjects, 668 were male subjects (83.4%) and 133 female subjects (16.4%). Their mean age was 46.6 years (${\pm}13.5$). The mean body mass index (BMI) was 25.8 (${\pm}3.8$) and subjects with BMI was over 28.0 accounted for 22.8% of the total. Fifty subjects (6.2%) were found to take benzodiazepines. Mean RDI and mean nocturnal oxygen saturation of all subjects was 31.2 (${\pm}24.4$) and 94.5% (${\pm}3.6$), respectively. In comparison with normal values, the subjects showed longer sleep latency, lower sleep efficiency, decreased total slow wave sleep % (TSWS %), and decreased total REM sleep % (TREM %)(p<0.01 in all). RDI had a negative correlation with each TSWS % and TREM % (p<0.01, p<0.01). However, RDI did not have significant correlation with either sleep latency or sleep efficiency. Conclusion: In this study, 6.2% of patients diagnosed as having obstructive sleep apnea syndrome were found to take benzodiazepines, although they are generally considered to be of litte benefit or even dangerous because of the respiratory suppressing effect. The proportion of obese subjects was only 22.8% and Korean patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome seem to be less obese than those described in foreign journals. This study also suggests that the severity of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome may have a more significant effect on sleep architecture defined as TSWS % and TREM % than on sleep efficiency.
