Practical controllers of industrial systems are usually designed and realized in continuous time domain. However, due to the programmable and flexible nature of digital computers and the speed and stability superioity of digital components over analog ones, it seems more effective to adapt digital controllers. When an existing analog controller performs satisfactory, it is often advantageous to use the digital redesign techinque to obtain an equlivalent digital controller which substitutes the analog one. One method of the digital redesign is to use a periodic gain. This method gives a riffle effect on the steady state response, although it's transient response is satisfactory. This paper suggests a method which eliminates or deminishes periodic ripples generated by the periodic function.

This paper extends some well-known system theories on algebraic matrix Lyapunov and Riccati equations. These extended results contain two point boundary conditions in matrix differential equations and include conventional results as special cases. Necessary and sufficient conditions are derived under which linear systems are stabilizable with feedback gains derived from periodic two-point boundary matrix differential equations. An iterative computation method for two-point boundary differential Riccati equations is given with an initial guess method. The results in this paper are related to periodic feedback controls and also to the quadratic cost problem with a discrete state penalty.

This paper concerns with preventive replacement under periodic inspections for an item (system) which is in a state of preparedness. The item is subject to wear. The item fails randomly but the failure rate depends on the accumulated wear. The item is preventively replaced if it survives a certain wear limit at periodic inspections. The foiled item is, however, replaced at periodic inspections. Given the costs for replacements and inspections, and the penalty cost of the time elapsed between failure und its detection, the optimal wear limit according to the long-run expected cost per unit time criterion is derived. It has been proved that the optimal wear limit is unique if an item has increasing weer-dependent failure rate. A numerical example for a stationary gamma wear process with Weibull distributed failure is given to show its applicability.

Disk radial runout creates a periodic relative motion between the laser beam spot and tracks formed on an optical disk. While only focus control is activated, the periodic relative motion yields sinusoid-like waves in the tracking error signal, where one cycle of the sinusoid-like waves corresponds to one track. The frequency of the sinusoid-like waves varies depending on the disk rotational speed and the amount of the disk radial runout. If the frequency of the tracking error signal in the off-track state is too high due to large radial runout of the disk, it is not a simple matter to begin track-following control stably. It might take a long time to reach a steady state or tracking control might fail to reach a stable steady state in the worst case. This article proposes a simple method for reducing the relative motion caused by the disk radial runout in the off-track state. The relative motion in the off-track state is effectively reduced by a drive input obtained through measurements of the tracking error signal and simple calculations based on the measurements, which helps reduce the transient response time of the track-following control. The validity of the proposed method is verified through an experiment using an optical disk drive.

We have obtained opal-like photonic crystals based on opals and inverted opals exhibiting a shift of the selective reflection band toward longer and shorter wavelengths with respect to the diffraction band of the initial opal consisting of $SiO_2$ spheres. The contribution of frames forming three-dimensional periodic structures and that of fillers to the spectral arrangement of the diffraction bands has been determined.

AFC (Adaptive Feedforward Control) is significantly employed for improving control performance of dynamic systems particularly involving periodic disturbance signals in engineering fields. This paper presents a novel hybrid AFC approach for discrete-time systems with multiple disturbances in terms of control input and state variables. The proposed AFC mechanism is hierarchically composed of a conventional feedforward control framework and PID auxiliary control configuration in parallel. The former is generic to decrease periodic disturbance excited to control actuators and the latter is additionally constructed to overcome control deterioration due to time-varying uncertainty under given systems. We carry out numerical simulation to test reliability of our proposed hybrid AFC system and compare its control performance to a well-known conventional AFC method with respect to time and frequency domains for proving of its superiority.

The results of full-scale numerical experiments of a hybrid thorium-containing fuel cell facility operating in a close-to-critical state due to a controlled source of fusion neutrons are discussed in this work. The facility under study was a complex consisting of two blocks. The first block was based on the concept of a high-temperature gas-cooled thorium reactor core. The second block was an axially symmetrical extended plasma generator of additional neutrons that was placed in the near-axial zone of the facility blanket. The calculated models of the blanket and the plasma generator of D-T neutrons created within the work allowed for research of the neutronic parameters of the facility in stationary and pulse-periodic operation modes. This research will make it possible to construct a safe facility and investigate the properties of thorium fuel, which can be continuously used in the epithermal spectrum of the considered hybrid fusion-fission reactor.
In this paper, the eigenvalue sensitivity analysis algorithm in discrete systems by the RCF method are presented and applied to the power system including TCSC. The RCF analysis method enabled to precisely calculate eigenvalue sensitivity coefficients of dominant oscillation modes after periodic switching operations. These simulation results are very different from those of the conventional continuous system analysis method such as the state space equation method
In this paper, author describe the simulation results concerning the period doubling bifurcation route to chaos of DC/DC boost converter under current mode control to show that it is common phenomena on switching regulator when parameters are improperly chosen or continuously varied beyond the ensured region by system designer. Bifurcation diagrams of periodic orbits of inductor current and capacitor voltage of DC/DC boost converter are plotted with sampled data at moment of each clock pulse causing switching on. DC/DC boost converter studied on this paper is modelled by its state space equations as per switching condition under continuous conduction mode. Current reference signal and capacitance are chosen as the bifurcation parameters and those are varied in step for iterative calculation to find bifurcation points of periodic orbits of state variables.
