The regulatory periodic safety inspection system is one of the most important methods for confirming the safety of nuclear power plants and the defense in depth in nuclear safety is the most important basic means for accident prevention and mitigation. Recently, a new regulatory technology based on risk-informed and safety performance has been developed and used in advanced countries. However, since the domestic periodic inspection system is being used in the same way over 30 years, it is necessary to know how the inspection contributes to the safety confirmation of the nuclear power plants. In this study, the domestic periodic inspection system currently in use was analyzed from the perspective of defense in depth in nuclear safety. In addition, the analysis results were compared to the U.S. NRC's safety inspection system to obtain consistency and lessons in this study. As a result of analysis, the NRC's safety inspections were distributed almost evenly at the all levels of defense in depth, while in the case of domestic inspection, they were heavily focused on the level 1 of defense in depth. Therefore, it appeared urgent to improve the inspection system to strengthen the other levels of defense in depth in nuclear safety.

This paper considers a periodic review, two-echelon inventory system with one central warehouse and several re-tailers facing normally distributed demand. The goal is to attain target fill rates, while the systemwide total holding costs are minimized. An important aspect of this problem is material rationing in the case of shortages. If a central warehouse has insufficient inventory to deliver all replenishment orders to retailers, all order quantities are should be adjusted according to some rationing rule. A simple but efficient rationing rule is proposed and compared with the Balanced Stock (BS) rationing as introduced by Heijden which is known to be the best rationing policy in the literature. Numerical results show that the proposed rationing rule is more cost effective than BS rationing, especially for the differences in holding costs between retailers are large.

A periodic review inventory model for deteriorating items in which time is treated as a discrete variable is developed. The model is developed under deterministic but time dependent demands and instantaneous delivery. Deterioration is assumed to be a constant fraction of the on hand inventory and partial returns are allowed for the deteriorated items. The solution procedures for obtaining the optimal order quantities which maximize the total profit in the scheduling period are presented for the cases of back orders and lost sales. Finally, when the additional orders are allowed, an efficient solution algorithm determining the initial and additional order quantities and additional ordering time is developed. Some numerical examples are also presented to illustrate the results.
