  • In a dynamically changing environment, the manager of a maintenance and remodeling (M/R) program is confronted with an increasing complexity of coordinating and cooperating multi-resource constrained multiple projects. The root causes of the complexity, uncertainty and interdependence, cause an internal disruption of an activity and chain reactions of disturbance propagation that deteriorate the stability and manageability of the program. This paper evaluates previous endeavors to apply production control and management techniques to the construction industry, and investigates the possibility of applying other management concepts and theories to organizational program management. In particular, this paper proposes a buffer allocation model by which periodic buffers are allocated in the flows of program constraint resources to stabilize a program master schedule instead of protecting individual activities. Comparative experiments by Monte Carlo simulations illustrate improved performance of the proposed model in terms of program's goals: productivity, flexibility, and long-term stability.

  • The effect of oscillating on the unsteady laminar flow past a circular cylinder is numerically investigated in the present study. Our study is to analyze the vortex formation behind a circular cylinder for different rotary oscillation conditions. And then we are study to portray the unsteady dynamics of wake flows. We decide lock-on region by observing the phase switching phenomena We classify the vortex formation patterns in the primary lock-on region The present study is to identify the quasi-periodic state around lock-on region. At the boundary between lock-on and non-lock-on the shedding frequency is bifurcated. After the bifurcation, one frequency follow the forcing frequency ($S_f$) and the other returns to the natural shedding frequency ($St_0$). In the quasi-periodic state, the variation of magnitudes and relevant phase changes of $C_L$ with forcing phase are examined.

  • The power plants use turbine output control devices to supply or shut off steam to high pressure and low-pressure steam turbines connected to generators. This turbine output control device is driven by a hydraulic servo actuator. The gas flows into the hydraulic servo actuator during periodic inspection or normal operation, and the resulting adiabatic compression of the gas raises the internal temperature of the actuator to $500^{\circ}C$. This temperature increase causes the seals to burn and show wear and tear, resulting in failure. In this study, an air vent valve was installed to allow gas inside the hydraulic servo actuator to flow large quantities of air at the beginning of the operation and after the periodic inspection. Gas was passed through for only minute flow during normal operation of the power plant. By applying the air vent valve, it improves the reliability of the hydraulic servo actuator by discharge the gas appropriately to improve the life of the seal.

  • Numerical simulations of laminar flow over a sphere are conducted to investigate the effect of the Reynolds number on the characteristics of vortex shedding. The Reynolds numbers considered are between 300 and 475, covering unsteady planar-symmetric and asymmetric flows. Results show that the unsteady planar-symmetric flow can be categorized into two different regimes: single-frequency regime and multiple-frequency regime. The former has a single frequency component due to periodic shedding of the vortices with the same strength in every shedding cycle, while the latter has multiple frequency components due to cycle-to-cycle variation in the strength of shed vortices with the shedding angle fixed. The multiple-frequency planar-symmetric flow, which is newly found in the present study, occurs at Re=330${\sim}$360 between the single-frequency planar-symmetric flow and the asymmetric flow. On the other hand, the asymmetric flow occurs at Re${\geq}$365, where the vortices shed from the sphere show variation both in strength and shedding angle unlike the planar-symmetric flow. Also, it is shown that the breaking of planar symmetry is closely related to the imbalance of vortical strength between a pair of streamwise vortices.

  • In this study, we present a multidimensional open system for valveless pumping (VP). This system consists of an elastic tube connected to two open tanks filled with a fluid under gravity. The two-dimensional elastic tube model is constructed based on the immersed boundary method, and the tank model is governed by a system of ordinary differential equations based on the work-energy principle. The flows into and out of the elastic tube are modeled in terms of the source/sink patches inside the tube. The fluid dynamics of this system is generated by the periodic compress-and-release action applied to an asymmetric region of the elastic tube. We have developed an algorithm to couple these partial differential equations and ordinary differential equations using the pressure-flow relationship and the linearity of the discretized Navier-Stokes equations. We have observed the most important feature of VP, namely, the existence of a unidirectional net flow in the system. Our computations are focused on the factors that strongly influence the occurrence of unidirectional flows, for example, the frequency, compression duration, and location of pumping. Based on these investigations, some case studies are performed to observe the details of the ow features.

  • Aerodynamic characteristics for two-dimensional cyclic motion profile of flapping airfoil in low Reynolds number flows are investigated. Plunging motion and lead-lag motion in the two dimensional space with different plunging and lead-lag amplitudes are combined to cyclic motion profile and the flow around the airfoil is simulated. Present result shows that the improved aerodynamic efficiencies for a given flapping airfoil by adding periodic lead-lag motion of airfoil rather than the pure plunging case. The thrust coefficient and lift coefficient are compared with each cycle during the flapping period and aerodynamic characteristics are obtained on upstroke motion and downstroke motion.

  • Surge motion of top-end platform induced by periodic wave makes marine flexible riser encounter equivalent sheared-oscillatory flow, under which the Vortex-induced Vibration (VIV) response will be more complicated than pure sheared flow or oscillatory flow cases. Based on a time domain force-decomposition model, the VIV response characteristics under sheared-oscillatory flows are investigated numerically in this paper. Firstly, the adopted numerical model is validated well against laboratory experiments under sheared flow and oscillatory flow. Then, 20 sheared-oscillatory flow cases with different oscillation periods and top maximum current velocities are designed and simulated. Under long and short oscillation period cases, the structural response presents several similar features owing to the instantaneous sheared flow profile at each moment, but it also has some different patterns because of the differently varying flow field. Finally, the effects and essential mechanism of oscillation period and top maximum current velocity on VIV response are discussed systematically.

  • The optimal design of batch-storage network by using periodic square wave model provides analytical lot sizing equations for a complex supply chain network characterized as multi-supplier, multi-product, multi-stage, non-serial, multi-customer, cyclic system including recycling and/or remanufacturing. The network structure includes multiple currency flows as well as material flows. The processes are represented by multiple feedstock/product materials with fixed composition which are very suitable for production processes. In this study, transportation processes that carry multiple materials with unknown composition are added and the time frame is changed from single period into multiple periods in order to represent nonperiodic parameter variations. The objective function of the optimization involves minimizing the opportunity costs of annualized capital investments and currency/material inventories minus the benefit to stockholders in the numeraire currency. The expressions for the Kuhn-Tucker conditions of the optimization problem are reduced to a multiperiod subproblem for average flow rates and analytical lot-sizing equations. The multiperiod lot sizing equations are different from single period ones. The effects of corporate income taxes, interest rates and exchange rates are incorporated.

  • Flow patterns in the presence of two identical nearby circular cylinders at =100 were numerically studied. We considered all possible arrangements of the two circular cylinders in terms of the distance between the two cylinders and the inclination angle with respect to the direction of the main flow. Eight distinct flow patterns were identified based on vorticity contours and streamlines, which are Base-Bleed, Biased-Base-Bleed, Shear- Layer-Reattachment, Induced-Separation, Vortex-Impingement, Flip-Flopping, Modulated Periodic, and Synchronized-Vortex-Shedding. Collecting all the numerical results, we propose a general flow pattern diagram for flows past the two cylinders. The perfect geometrical symmetry implied in the flow configuration allows one to use this diagram to distinguish flow patterns in the presence of two identical circular cylinders arbitrarily positioned in physical space with respect to the main flow direction.

  • In this study, the microchannel plated heat exchanger were numerically studied for the enhancement of heat transfer in the channel configuration. Unit cold and hot fluid region with the microchannel were modeled and periodic boundary condition at the side wall was applied to continuously repeating geometry. The material of micro-structured plate is STS304 and working fluid is water. Triangular obstacles were placed in micro channel to enhance heat transfer. The performance of microchannel plated heat exchangers were numerically investigated with various obstacle configuration and Reynolds number under the parallel and counter flows. Heat transfer rate has increased about 18% compared with straight channel, but pressure drop also increased about 3.5 times. The main factor of increasing of pressure drop and heat transfer rate is considered that the momentum was lost to collide against obstacles, generation of secondary flow and boundary layer separation, wake and vortex forming phenomena.
