  • Dynamics of phytoplankton community were monthly examined at two sites in Lake Juam from January to December 2003. One site is located near the Dam, an intake tower, where obtain a drinking water resource, the other site is located in the shallow region, Mundeok-bridge, the upstream or effluent part of lake. During the study, there made little the differences in physicochemical factors between two sites, but numbers of species and standing crops of phytoplankton differ remarkably. Totally, 41% of green algae and 35.8% of diatoms were comprised of total phytoplankton species, while 46.3% of dinoflagellates and 27.6% of cyanobacteria contributed in total standing crops of Phytoplankton community. Cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginora and diatom Fragilaria crotonensis dominated the Dam site during a warm season, while dinoflagellates Peridinium bipes and Asterionella formosa were at the shallow region during a cold season, respectively. According to the CCA analysis, dissolved oxygen, chemical oxygen demand and total phosphate strongly affected the growth of P. bipes with low water temperature. In addition, the increment of total nitrogen and water temperature affected biomass of a cyanobacterium M. aeruginosa. Collectively, it may suggest that the majority of annual primary production of Lake Juam is covered by two dominant species Peridinium bipes in cold season and Microcystis aeruginosa in warm season.

  • A study on phytoplankton community was carried out from June, 1992 to May, 1993 at selected stations in Hoedong Reservoir. The phytoplankton are identified as 176 taxa including 5 phylum, 67 genera. The important species in this reservoir were Asterionella formosa, C meneghiniana, Dictyosphaerium plilchellum, Fragilaria crotonensis, Melosira distans, M grantulata, M. granulata var. angustissima, M. granulate var. angntissima f. spirdis, Micractinium pussillum, Microcystis aeruginosa, Pundorina morn, Pediastrum boryanum, P. duplex, Peridinium sp., Scenedesmus quadriauda, Synedra acus, S. rumpens and S. ulna. The causative species of water bloom were identified as Microcystis aeruginsa, Trahellomonas hispida, Ceratium hirwdinella, Peridinium sp., Melosira italica, Staurastrum dorsidentiferum var. onatum in the area. During the study periods standing crcps of phytoplankton were maximum in August, 1992 and minimum in December 1992. The species dominance index and diversity index were ranged 24.7-99.9, 0.001-3.06, respectively. Key Words : phytoplankton community, causative species of water bloom, standing crops. dominance index, species diversity index.

  • The total and heterotrophic bacterial distributions, compositions and alkaline phosphatese actibities were analyzed in Lake Soyang from Sep. 1987 to Aug. 1988. The heterotrophic bacteria was small portion, 0.07-2.63% of total bacterial number which ranged from $3.2{\times}10^{5}$ to $3.2{\times}10^{6}$ cells/${\mu}\ell$. The composition of bacterial community was less diverse in summer and at the fish farm site and Peridinium blooming site. Pseudomonas and Flavo bacterium were the dominant genera in all sites. The highest proportion and activity of alkaline phsophatase was appeared in Flavobacterium, while Pseudomonas was the most predominant group.

  • Spatial and temporal distributions of zooplankton were measured in an oligotrophic pumped storage-type hydroelectric reservoir which was composed of two reservoirs exchanging water daily, with water going up at night and going down during the day. Repetitive diel disturbance of the water column can be a unique feature of this reservoir system. Chl-${\alpha}$ concentration was highest in the early winter season. Phytoplankton density was lower in summer monsoon due to high flushing rate on rainy days. The zooplankton density was higher in the smaller upper reservoir possibly due to lower fish density in the upper reservoir. In the seasonal variation a time gap was observed between the phytoplankton bloom and the zooplankton bloom (particularly a rotifer, Keratella cochlearis). It is likely to that Keratella production is partially supported by heterotrophic food sources than phytoplankton. The dominance of a mixotrophic dinoflagellate (Peridinium bipes f. ocultatum) might have complicated the trophic relationship between phytoplankton and zooplankton. Our results provide some ecological information of zooplankton community in a highly disturbed alpine reservoir ecosystem relying on mostly allochthonous organic matter.

  • Phytoplankton flora of Chinyang Lake and Hapchun Lake were studied. A total of 161 species(Chinyang Lake, 135 species; Hapchun Lake, 80 species) were identified. The major species of two lakes were Melosira granulate var. angustissima and M. italica. As the bloom causing species, Microcystis aeruginosa, Ceratium hirundinella, and Peridinium sp. were identified. The chlorophyll a concentration of Chinyang Lake was higher than Hapchun Lake.
