  • In this paper, the concept of evolvable hardware and evolutionary robotics are introduced and constructing the mobile robot controller without human operator is suggested. The robot controller is evolved to avoid obstacles by genetic learning which determines the weights between sensor inputs and motor outputs. Genetic algorithms which is executed in a computer(PC) searches the best weights by interacting with robot performance under it's environment. The experiment is done by real mobile robot Khepera and a simple GA.

  • In this study, a new stopping criterion, called "backward controlled stopping criterion" (BCSC), was proposed to be used in Genetic Algorithms. In the study, the available stopping citeria; adaptive stopping citerion, evolution time, fitness threshold, fitness convergence, population convergence, gene convergence, and developed stopping criterion were applied to the following four comparison problems; high strength concrete mix design, pre-stressed precast concrete beam, travelling salesman and reinforced concrete deep beam problems. When completed the analysis, the developed stopping criterion was found to be more accomplished than available criteria, and was able to research a much larger area in the space design supplying higher fitness values.

  • The cleaning robot is popularly used as a home appliance. The state-of-the-art cleaning robot can clean more efficiently by using information gathered from its sensor, which is difficult for low-price cleaning robots due to limitation in this aspect. In this paper, we suggested a method for the moving pattern of cleaning robot based on grammatical evolution. Optimized program is generated by using moving pattern grammar, which is defined by Backus-Naur form. In addition, conditional probability is used between each of the grammar elements during the program creation process. The proposed method is evaluated by robot simulation in order to verify its performance and further compare it with existing algorithms. The experiment results showed that the proposed method is better than the compared algorithms.

  • A total of 49 phenolic compounds were identified from the aged red wines made from Cabernet Gernischt (Vitis vinifera L. cv.) grapes, a Chinese characteristic variety, including 13 anthocyanins, 4 pryanocyanins, 4 flavan-3-ol monomers, 6 flavan-3-ol polymers, 7 flavonols, 6 hydroxybenzoic acids, 5 hydroxycinnamic acids, 3 stilbenes, and 1 polymeric pigment. Evolution of these compounds was investigated in wines aged 1 to 13 months. Variance analysis showed that the levels of most phenolics existed significant difference in between wines aged 3 and 9 months. Cluster analysis indicated that 2 groups could be distinguished, one corresponding to wines aged 1 to 3 months and the other to wines aged 4 to 13 months. It was thus suggested that there were 2 key-stages for the development of fine wine quality, at the aged 3 and 9 months, respectively. This work would provide some helpful information for quality control in wine production.

  • The luxury car industry has grown 10.5 % every year from 2010 to 2014. For this reason, it is very important for automotive companies to improve profitability and brand value. High-performance brake systems have become an absolute necessity because of the increase in engine power and customer preference among other factors. Also, competing automotive companies actively reinforce domestic production in order to maintain quality and infrastructure for luxury cars. In this regard, we demonstrated new carbon ceramic brakes to improve brake reliability for luxury cars and to improve the competitiveness of automotive companies. Finally, we propose the next-generation braking technology by predicting technological evolution trends.

  • In real system application, the 3-D obstacle avoidance system for the autonomous control of the underwater flight vehicle (UFV) operates with the following problems: the sonar offers the range/bearing information of obstacles in a local detection area, it requires the system that has reduced acoustic noise and power consumption in terms of the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), it has the UFV operation constraints such as maximum pitch and depth, and it requires an easy design procedure in terms of its structures and parameters. To solve these problems, an intelligent 3-D obstacle avoidance algorithm using the evolution strategy (ES) and the fuzzy logic controller (FLC), is proposed. To verify the performance of the proposed algorithm, the 3-D obstacle avoidance of UFV is performed. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm effectively solves the problems in the real system application.

  • NiO and Co3O4-doped porous La(CoNi)O3 perovskite oxides were prepared from excess Ni addition by a hydrothermal method using porous silica template, and characterized as bifunctional catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for Zn-air rechargeable batteries in alkaline solution. Excess Ni induced to form NiO and Co3O4 in La(CoNi)O3 particles. The NiO and Co3O4-doped porous La(CoNi)O3 showed high specific surface area, up to nine times of conventionally synthesized perovskite oxide, and abundant pore volume with similar structure. Extra added Ni was partially substituted for Co as B site of ABO3 perovskite structure and formed to NiO and Co3O4 which was highly dispersed in particles. Excess Ni in La(CoNi)O3 catalysts increased OER performance (259 mA/㎠ at 2.4 V) in alkaline solution, although the activities (211 mA/㎠ at 0.5 V) for ORR were not changed with the content of excess Ni. La(CoNi)O3 with excess Ni showed very stable cyclability and low capacity fading rate (0.38 & 0.07 ㎶/hour for ORR & OER) until 300 hours (~70 cycles) but more excess content of Ni in La(CoNi)O3 gave negative effect to cyclability.

  • An open rack vaporizer is a facility that vaporizes liquefied natural gas using sea water. When a vaporization efficiency of the open rack vaporizer decreases, liquefied natural gas can leak, which can cause great damage to the facility. Operators have to monitor the operation state of the facility in real-time to prevent the accident. However, operators have visited the site and have checked the state by looking at the value of sensors installed in the open rack vaporizer through indicators. For the safe operation of the open rack vaporizer, a monitoring system is needed to monitor the operation state of the open rack vaporizer in real-time without the need for operators to visit the site. In this paper, we developed a long term evolution based monitoring system to monitor the operation state of the open rack vaporizer. The developed system can monitor the real-time operation state of the open rack vaporizer at a control center far from the facility. For the system development, data transmission infrastructure using long term evolution was built. Afterwards a software was developed to monitor the operation state of the open rack vaporizer in real-time using the transmitted data. Finally, performance evaluation was conducted to confirm that the developed system operated successfully without data transmission delay or data missing.
