  • This research addresses examining the service recovery process in Airline service. A service recovery framework is suggested and tested empirically. The framework includes several factors such as service recovery expectations, service recovery achievements, recovery performance, post-recovery satisfaction, and post-recovery behavioral intents. The relationships among these factors are hypothesized and proved empirically. Consequently the results suggest that recovery expectation impacts on recovery performance significantly. Also the higher the recovery performance, the higher post-recovery satisfaction, then it increases customers' purchase intent and words of mouth. Finally, this paper suggests the need for new service recovery strategies.

  • This paper reviews the pivotal phases of the evolution of the current technology-dependent nuclear power safety regulation in the United States. Understanding of this evolution is essential to the development of any future regulatory paradigm, including the technology-neutral regulatory approach that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has recently embarked on to develop. The paper proposes and examines the implications of a predominately rationalist and best-estimate probabilistic regulatory framework called safety goals-driven performance-based regulation. This framework relies on continuous assessment of performance of a set of time-dependent safety-critical systems, structures and components that assure attainment of a broad set of technology-neutral protective, mitigative, and preventive goals. Finally, the paper discusses the steps needed to develop a corresponding technology-neutral regulatory system from the proposed framework.

  • More and more organizations in construction industry adopt knowledge management system (KMS) to facilitate process of creating, acquiring, capturing, sharing, and using knowledge so as to improve the competitiveness, productivity and efficiency of their organization. In spite of the tremendous efforts devoted to KMS, the return of investment on KMS is usually a black box to the investor due to the lack of a systematic framework for performance evaluation of the KMS. This paper aims at fulfilling such need. A conceptual performance evaluation framework is proposed based on Balanced Scorecard (BSC) method. Then a preliminary case study is conducted to assess the applicability of the proposed framework in an A/E consulting firm to evaluate the performance of KMS.

  • Benchmarking is an important tool to assess the performance of capital projects in the construction industry. Incorporating cost-related metrics into a benchmarking system requires an effective cost normalization process to enable meaningful comparisons among projects that were executed at different locations and times. Projects in the downstream and chemicals sector have unique characteristics compared to other types of construction projects, they require a distinctive cost normalization framework to be developed to benchmark their absolute cost performance. The purpose of this study is to develop such a framework to be used for the case of benchmarking the downstream and chemical projects for their performance assessment. The research team started with a review of existing cost normalization methodologies adopted in benchmarking systems and conducted 7 interviews to identify the current cost normalization practices used by industrial professionals. A panel of 12 experts was then convened and it held 6 review sessions to accomplish the framework development. The cost normalization framework for benchmarking downstream and chemical projects was established as a three-step procedure and it adopts a 4-element cost breakdown structure to accommodate projects submitted by both owners and contractors. It also incorporated 5 published cost indexes that are compatible with downstream and chemical projects and they were embedded into 2 options to complete the normalization process. The framework was then pilot-tested on 4 completed projects to validate its functional practicality and the downstream and chemical use case in the benchmarking system.

  • Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is a new emerging networking paradigm that has adopted a logically centralized architecture to increase overall network performance agility and programmability. Combining network virtualization with SDN will guarantees for combined advantages of improved flexibility and network performance. Combining SDN with hypervisors divides the network physical resources into several logical transparent and isolated virtual SDN network (vSDN), where each has its virtual controller. However, SDN hypervisors bring several advantages as well as several challenges to its network operators as for the virtual appliances, their efficient placement, assurance of network performance is mandatory, and their dynamic instantiation with their migration. In this article, we provide a brief and concise review of network virtualization along with its implementation in the SDN network. SDN hypervisors types are discussed, and taxonomy is provided to demonstrate the importance of hypervisors in SDN. A comparison of SDN hypervisors is performed to elaborate on the vital hypervisor software along with their features, and different challenges are discussed faced by the SDN network. A framework is proposed to add combined functionalities of hypervisors to create a more effective and efficient virtual system. The purpose of the framework is to increase network performance through proper configuration of resources, software, control plane isolation functions with defined rules and policies.

  • Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) encapsulates computer hardware into a large amount of virtual and manageable instances mainly in the form of virtual machine (VM), and provides rental service for users. Currently, VM anomaly incidents occasionally occur, which leads to performance issues and even downtime. This paper aims at detecting anomalous VMs based on performance metrics data of VMs. Due to the dynamic nature and increasing scale of IaaS, detecting anomalous VMs from voluminous correlated and non-Gaussian monitored performance data is a challenging task. This paper designs an anomaly detection framework to solve this challenge. First, it collects 53 performance metrics to reflect the running state of each VM. The collected performance metrics are testified not to follow the Gaussian distribution. Then, it employs independent components analysis (ICA) instead of principal component analysis (PCA) to extract independent components from collected non-Gaussian performance metric data. For anomaly detection, it employs multi-class Bayesian classification to determine the current state of each VM. To evaluate the performance of the designed detection framework, four types of anomalies are separately or jointly injected into randomly selected VMs in a campus-wide testbed. The experimental results show that ICA-based detection mechanism outperforms PCA-based and LDA-based detection mechanisms in terms of sensitivity and specificity.

  • The effective supply chain management(SCM) is a matter of survival in many firms because successful supply chains will effectively coordinate their processes, focus on delivering customer value, eliminate unnecessary costs in key functional areas, and create performance measurement systems. The balanced scorecard(BSC) is widely used to measure the performance of the SCM. The BSC framework suggests that balance is obtained by adopting performance measures from four different areas. In this study, we analyzed the causal relationship of SCM performance based on BSC framework. First, we reviewed the nested causal relationships among four different perspective of the BSC, namely, business process perspective, customer perspective, financial perspective, and innovation and learning perspective. Then, we used the chi-square difference test to identify the best model to fit the causal relationship of SCM performance. Of the 800 questionnaires posted, a total of 265 questionnaires were returned after one follow-up. A total of 66 questionnaires were eliminated due to largely missing values. The major finding says alternative model 3 is dominant to other models to fit causal relationships among four different perspective of the BSC. Innovation and learning perspective positively influence on customer perspective, business process perspective, and financial perspective. Business process perspective also positively influence on customer perspective and financial perspective whereas customer perspective does not influence on financial perspective significantly.
