  • This study has been carried out to observe the driving and the intercepting effects of air screen on some sea-water fishes ; Chrysophrys major, Mylio macrocephalus, Fugu pardalis. 1. By perforating fine holes on the compressed air pipes, air screen was formed in the water, and this screen was set at $45^{\circ}$, and $90^{\circ}$ against the fish passage to observe the reactions on the part of the fish. 2. Changes were given to the location of the air screen in the water to observe how the air screen drived the fish to its direction. 3. The effective distance between holes on the air piprs was determined by a series of experiments of setting up two air screens of various types in hole distance, by moving a screen to-ward the other, and of observing the distance between two screens when fish eseape through the space. The results of the above experiments observed as follows were : 1. The passage of fish was effectively intercepted by setting up the air screens at 45 degrees against the fish passage and it was also intercepted when the screen was set at 90 degrees against the passage. 2. Fish could be driven by moving the air screen toward the fish. 3. The air screen formed from the pipe above than 0.3mm in diameter was effective, but less than 0.2mm was not sufficiently effective. 4. The strength of the air pressure in the pipe should be higher than $0.087kg/cm^2$. 5. The fish holding ability to obtain effective air screen was ranged as following when the air pressure was $0.160kg/cm^2$. and the hole diameter was 0.3mm on the 12.6mm pipe, depending upon the intervals of the holes on the pipe: The shortest distance which could hold fish between two screens was 59.4cm when the holes were perforated at every 40cm; 33.5cm when at every 30cm; 28.75cm when at every 10cm: and 27.25cm when at every 5cm. Thus, no significant change was at served when the holes were perforated more densely than 30cm intervals. Therefor the hole intervals should be 30cm in designing fishing gear employing air screen.

  • Both hydraulic and dynamic characteristics of a single perforated wall are studied theoretically and experimentally. Theoretically, the effect of evanescent modes on wave force acting on a single perated wall is studied by use of the Horiguchi theory. The wave force on the perforated wall is presented to be insensitive to evanescent modes. According to experimental study, The larger perforation ratio(${\gamma}$) grows, the weaker the wave force on the wall becomes sensitively. And in the small value of l/D (ratio of wall thickness(l) to hole diameter(D)) where the holes on the wall are regarded as orifice, the wave force on the wall is insensitive to the variation of l/D. Energy loss coefficient f is estimated at 1.0 in this small value of l/D by use of Horiguchi theory. But in the large value of l/D where the holes are regarded as pipe, the wave force on the wall is relatively sensitive to the variation of l/D and f is estimated at 1.5 by use of Horiguchi theory.

  • The loss coefficient of the butterfly valve which allows partial opening of the valve at closed position and is applicable to the small-sized pipe system with the diameter of 1 inch was measured for the variation of the valve disk blockage ratio. Two different types of the valve disk configuration to adjust the blockage ratio were considered. One was the solid type valve disk of which the diameter was changed into the smaller size rather than the pipe diameter, and the other was the perforate type valve disk on which some holes were perforated. The results from two types of valve disk were compared to identify their characteristics in the loss coefficient distributions. The loss coefficient and the controllable angle of the valve disk were decreased exponentially with the decrease of the blockage ratio. In addition, the perforate valve disk had the effect on the higher loss coefficient rather than the solid type valve disk.

  • A Study was made to improve soil and water temperature and mechanized farming for a wetted paddy under the influence of artesian groundwater located at Samcheon-Dong, Chuncheon City, Kangweon Province. Half perforated PVC drainage pipes were installed in the test paddy to observe temperature change of water and soil. The temperature of the water in the paddy and soil itself raised significantly after the installation of the half perforated PVC pipes. A subsequent improvement of growth and yield of rice on the paddy was achieved. Harvesting operation was also improved with firm ground condition so that cutting and threshing could be done simultaneously within the paddy plot. Following results were obtained from the study. 1.Temperature of the water in a paddy under the influence of artesian groundwater was not changed notably although air temperature was fluctuated during the crop period. Soil temperature was mostly affected by the artesian groundwater. However, the half perforated PVC pipe drainage system made it possible to raise temperature of water and soil remarkably up to the level of optimum farming. 2.Total precipitation was 534.Omm during the crop period of the paddy for 118 days from May 26 to September 20 in 1992. Due to heavy rainfalls of 105.6mm and 109.8mm occurred on August 7 and August 27.1992, respectively, the rate of the artesian groundwater increased to 35 litter per minute with two to three days of time lag. 3.Average rate of the artesian groundwater was 28 litter per minute from the one year of observation. The rate varied by 0.7 to 1.3 times of average during the observation period. Peak rate of the artesian groundwater decreased to 14.5 litter per minute when daily precipitation maintained at the amount of 20 to 30mm for a long time period. Contrarily, it showed a tendency to increase to 35 to 40 litter per minute when heavier precipitation of 50 to l00mm occurred in a short period of three to five days. 4.Growth and yield of Yemyung variety of rice planted on the paddy that was facilitated with a drainage system with half perforated PVC pipes were confirmed at a normal level, while paddy without this perporated drainage system showed abnormal growth with low yield.

  • Objective of this research was to remove the accumulated salts in the plastic film house soils by installing the perforated PVC (${\phi}10cm$) underdrainage pipes at 50 cm depth of soils with cultivating vegetables. Efficiency of the underdrainage pipes was assessed based on the changes of soil chemical properties such as pH, EC, and cations, and growth and yield parameters of the vegetables between the two treatments; the control and the underdrainage pipe treatments. The EC of the underdrainage pipes installed soils after two growing seasons were in the ranges of $1.42-2.88dS\;m^{-1}$ but those of the control were in the ranges of $3.86-4.53dS\;m^{-1}$, indication the underdrainage pipes effectively removed the accumulated salts in soils. The pHs of the control soils and the underdrainage pipe installed soil were in the ranges of 7.2-7.5 and 6.9-7.3, respectively. There was a significant correlation between pH and cation exchange capacity (CEC) of the soils ($CEC=17.107{\times}pH-106.2$, $r^2=0.759$, P < 0.05). The ECs of the soils at different depths were compared between the two treatments after cultivating vegetables with lettuce-lettuce-garland chrysanthemum rotation systems. The ECs of the control soils at depths of 0-10, 10-20, 20-30, 30-40, and 40-50 cm were 3.45, 3.47, 3.03, 2.03, and $2.28dS\;m^{-1}$, respectively, with decreasing with soil depths. On the other hand, the respective ECs of the underdrainage pipes installed soils were 2.43, 2.52, 2.28, 4.00, and $4.23dS\;m^{-1}$ with increasing with soil depths. This might be derived from the salts moved downward with the draining water into the subsoil. The order of cations moved downward was Mg > Ca > K, based on the ratios of cations at specific depth over those at the surface soil. The survival rates of lettuce after 15 days of transplanting in the underdrainage pipe installed soils were 98.2% as compared to 86.6% of the control. The underdrainage pipe treatment also increased the diameter of the lettuce stalk from 12.9mm of the control to 13.7mm. Overall results demonstrated that the installment of the underdrainage pipes in the subsoils of the salt accumulated plastic film house soil effectively removed the salts by leaching downward, resulting in lowering soil EC and enhancing the growth and yield of vegetables.

  • Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis was carried out to investigate exhaust gas flow and acoustic characteristics in the exhaust system of a passenger car. Transient 3-dimensional flow field in the front and rear mufflers was simulated by CFD and far-field sound pressure was modeled by a simple monopole source method. Engine performance simulation was also performed to obtain the boundary condition of instantaneous fluid flow variation at the inlet of the exhaust system. Detailed exhaust gas flow characteristics such as velocity and pressure distribution inside the mufflers were presented and the pulsating pressure amplitude was compared at several positions in the exhaust system to deduce sound pressure level. The present method of the acoustic analysis coupled with CFD techniques would be very effective for the prediction of sound noise from vehicle exhaust systems although the effects of the inlet boundary condition and heat transfer on the accuracy of the prediction have to be validated through further studies.

  • Straight absorptive silencers have been designed to reduce the noise level of a centrifugal blower. Three-dimensional boundary element method is used for the design of absorptive silencers which consist of a perforated main pipe and a outer chamber filled with fibrous material. The experimental results show that the absorptive silencer reduces up to 8 dB(A) in the overall sound pressure level of the blower and up to 15 dB at the blade passing frequency. It is also found that the gap between the silencer and the impeller may substantially alter the acoustic performance of the silencers. The transmission loss predicted by the boundary element method follows overall trends of the measured insertion loss. The experiments also show that the impact of the silencers on the aerodynamic performance of the blower is minimum.

  • Presently, one or several tugboats guide a ship in the port or canal, during the ship's engines and steering mechanism kept idle. This method has insufficient ability keeping the ship on course, danger of collision with waterside structures, tugging preparation time consuming, as well as the need expending substantial resources to acquire and maintain tugboats and associated facilities. Therefore, a new technology and system for ship's guiding to be needed and introduced instead of traditional guiding and tugging system.

  • In this study, laboratory model test on utilization of recycled aggregates and crushed stone as horizontal drains to use alternative material of sand in soft ground is practiced. The coefficient of permeability of the recycled aggregates and crushed stone showed largely 1.2~5.1 times and 2.0~3.3 times greater than sand, respectively. The horizontal coefficient of permeability in case of installing the horizontal perforated drain pipe showed largely 1.9~6.8 times more than the case of not installing. The drainage distance showed 1.7~1.8 times greater than sand. When a degree of consolidation is 90 %, there is no delay of consolidation in SCP and PVD improvement sections. Therefore, it is proven that the field applicability is excellent. Also, the suitable quality management criterion is presented to make use of a horizontal drains in soft ground on the basis of analysis of the physical and environmental characteristics.
