  • An efficient and robust neural network-based scheme is introduced in this paper to perform automatic cloud detection. Unlike many existing cloud detection schemes which use thresholding and statistical methods, we used the artificial neural network methods, the multi-layer perceptrons (MLP) with back-propagation algorithm and radial basis function (RBF) networks for cloud detection from Geostationary satellite images. We have used a simple scene (a mixed scene containing only cloud and clear sky). The main results show that the neural networks are able to handle complex atmospheric and meteorological phenomena. The experimental results show that two methods performed well, obtaining a classification accuracy reaching over 90 percent. Moreover, the RBF model is the most effective method for the cloud classification.

  • Load forecasting has always been essential to the operation and planning of power systems in deregulated electricity markets. Various methods have been proposed for load forecasting, and the neural network is one of the most widely accepted and used techniques. However, to obtain more accurate results, more information is needed as input variables, resulting in huge computational costs in the learning process. In this paper, to reduce training time in multi-layer perceptron-based short-term load forecasting, a graphics processing unit (GPU)-based computing method is introduced. The proposed approach is tested using the Korea electricity market historical demand data set. Results show that GPU-based computing greatly reduces computational costs.

  • In the present study, artificial neural network based on the multi-layer perceptron is used and an optimum model is chosen through the process of efficiency evaluation in order to develop a system predicting maximum displacements of the earth retaining walls at various excavation stages. By analyzing the measured field data collected at various urban excavation sites in Korea, factors influencing on the behaviors of the excavation wall are examined. Among the measured data collected, reliable data are further selected on the basis of the performance ratio and are used as a data base. Data-based measurements are also utilized for both teaming and verifying the artificial neural network model. The learning is carried out by using the back-propagation algorithm based on the steepest descent method. Finally, to verify a validity of the formulated artificial neural network system, both the magnitude and the occurring position of the maximum horizontal displacement are predicted and compared with measured data at real excavation sites not included in the teaming process.

  • To effectively monitor the variety of distributions of neutron flux, fuel power or temperatures in the reactor core, usually the ex-core and in-core neutron detectors are employed. The thermocouples for temperature measurement are installed in the coolant inlet or outlet of the respective fuel assemblies. It is necessary to reconstruct the measurement information of the whole reactor position. However, the reading of different types of detector in the core reflects different aspects of the 3D power distribution. The feasibility of reconstruction the core three-dimension power distribution by using different combinations of in-core, ex-core and thermocouples detectors is analyzed in this paper to synthesize the useful information of various detectors. A comparison of multilayer perceptron (MLP) network and radial basis function (RBF) network is performed. RBF results are more extreme precision but also more sensitivity to detector failure and uncertainty, compare to MLP networks. This is because that localized neural network could offer conservative regression in RBF. Adding random disturbance in training dataset is helpful to reduce the influence of detector failure and uncertainty. Some convolution neural networks seem to be helpful to get more accurate results by use more spatial layout information, though relative researches are still under way.

  • Custom power devices such as dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) and DSTATCOM are used to improve the power quality in distribution systems. These devices require real power to compensate the deep voltage sag during sufficient time. An interline DVR (IDVR) consists of several DVRs in different feeders. In this paper, a neural network is proposed to control the IDVR performance to achieve optimal mitigation of voltage sags, swell, and unbalance, as well as improvement of dynamic performance. Three multilayer perceptron neural networks are used to identify and regulate the dynamics of the voltage on sensitive load. A backpropagation algorithm trains this type of network. The proposed controller provides optimal mitigation of voltage dynamic. Simulation is carried out by MATLAB/Simulink, demonstrating that the proposed controller has fast response with lower total harmonic distortion.

  • A closed-loop system modeling of an active/semiactive suspension system has been accomplished through an artificial neural network. A 7DOF full model as a system's equation of motion has been derived and an output feedback linear quadratic regulator has been designed for control purpose. A training set of a sample data has been obtained through a computer simulation. A 7DOF full model with LQR controller simulated under several road conditions such as sinusoidal bumps and rectangular bumps. A general multilayer perceptron neural network is used for dynamic modeling and target outputs are fedback to the a layer. A backpropagation method is used as a training algorithm. Model validation of new dataset have been shown through computer simulations.

  • Recently, as studies about Artificial Neural Network (ANN) are actively progressing, studies for predicting water quality of rivers using ANN are being conducted. However, it is difficult to analyze the operation process inside ANN, because ANN is form of Black-box. Although eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) is used to analyze the computational process of ANN, research using XAI technology in the field of water resources is insufficient. This study analyzed Multi Layer Perceptron (MLP) to predict Water Temperature (WT), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), hydrogen ion concentration (pH) and Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) at the Dasan water quality observatory in the Nakdong river using Layer-wise Relevance Propagation (LRP) among XAI technologies. The MLP that learned water quality was analyzed using LRP to select the optimal input data to predict water quality, and the prediction results of the MLP learned using the optimal input data were analyzed. As a result of selecting the optimal input data using LRP, the prediction accuracy of MLP, which learned the input data except daily precipitation in the surrounding area, was the highest. Looking at the analysis of MLP's DO prediction results, it was analyzed that the pH and DO a had large influence at the highest point, and the effect of WT was large at the lowest point.
