This study investigated the causality of the children's self-perceived competence and related variables(age, sex, socio-demographic variables, family structure, the number of brother, home environmental process variables and peer group environmental variables.) The subjects of this study were 842 children at age five, seven, nine, eleven and thirteen attending kindergartens. elementary schools and junior high schools and their mothers in Seoul. This study employed children's self-perceived competence scales(The Pictorial scales for 5, 7, Qestionnaire for 9, 11, 13) home environment scales and peer group enviornment scales(the Pictorial scales for 5, 7 Qestionnaire for 9, 11, 13) Freqencies one way-ANOVA Pearson's Cronbach's αmultiple regression and path analysis were used for data-analysis. Major findings were as follows: 1. The results of the analysis of causal model showed that the variables that affected cognitive self-perceived competence directly were age, sex, parent's education economic status of the home the number of brother and peer's emotional support 2. The results of the analysis of causal model showed that the variables that affected social self-perceived competence directly were sex, economic status of the home, peer's emotional support and common activity. 3. The results of the analysis of causal model showed that the variables that affected physical self-perceived competence directly were age, sex, peer's emotional support and common activity.
This study explored adjustment of school-aged children from low-income divorced families. Specifically, protective factors for children's self-perceived competence and behavior problems were investigated with children's coping strategies, perceived social support, parents' childrearing style, and parental stress. Subjects of this study were 126 children of 4 to 6 grade and their custodial parents(38 fathers, 88 mothers) from divorced families. Children's self-perceived competence and behavior problems were not different neither by children's sex nor custodial parent's sex. When children used more positive and less negative coping strategies, and when parents experienced less childrearing stress, children perceived themselves to be more competent. Similarly, when children used more positive and less negative coping strategies, received more social support, they perceived themselves to be more adequate. Children whose parents had high levels of childrearing stress showed more internalized and externalized behavior problems. Furthermore, children who perceived less supports from peers showed more behavior problems.
Atopic dermatitis is the fastest growing skin disorder among children from infancy to adolescence in Korea. The side-effects of atopic dermatitis not only include physical discomfort, but also psychological trauma which ultimately affects the developmental growth of children. This study was conducted in order to investigate the behavioral characteristics of an atopic dermatitis sufferer. As part of this research, the relative influence of behavioral problems and, self-perceived competence were analyzed in relation to the social competence of an atopic child. In total, 301 atopic and non-atopic children, between 2 and 6 years of age, and their mothers and teachers participated in the study. From this number, 109 children had atopic dermatitis, while 192 children did not. Mothers were asked to complete a parent-report questionnaire that required information on parental stress, according to the scale parenting methodology of Abbdin(1990) and Cho(1999). Teachers were subjected to teacher-report questionnaires which included topics on social competence, socia-emotional assessment and behavioral problems of an atopic child. Furthermore, children also completed questionnaires on self-perceived competence. According to analysis on K-CBCL, ITSEA, social competence, self-perceived competence and parental stress, children with atopic dermatitis showed higher scores in depression/anxiety and depression/withdrawal, compared to children in the normal control group. In relation to parental stress, daily stress, parental role stress, and stress related disease, mothers with atopic dermatitis children exhibited higher scores. In establishing relationships among the related variables, atopic children who demonstrated more social competence were more likely to suffer less from withdrawal, attention problems, and depression/anxiety. Stress related disease in mothers with atopic children was positively related to attention problems of the child. In terms of relative influences, behavioral problems was the most significant variable, accounting for 23% of variance. Lower behavioral problems was positively related to more social competence. In summation, this study investigated the general characteristics of atopic children. In conclusion, atopic children and their mothers had difficulty in dealing with this disease. It is our belief that an atopic child would not only require physical treatment, but also need appropriate psychological care.
The Ecological variables studied in relation to children's school adjustment were organisms(grade, sex, perceived competence, aggression and withdrawal), microsystems(parental support, marital conflict and supervision, peer victimization and perceived teacher attitude), mesosystems(family-peer relationships, family-school relationships) and the exosystem(neighborhood environment). The sample consisted of 565 fifth and sixth grade children. Instruments were the School Adjustment Scale and Index of organisms, microsystems, mesosystems, and exosystem variables. Statistics and methods used for the data analysis were Cronbach's alpha, frequency, percentage, Pearson's correlation and multiple regression. Several major results were found from the analysis. First, children's school adjustment showed positive correlations with perceived competence, parental support and supervision, perceived teacher attitude, family/peer and family/school relationships and neighborhood environment but showed negative correlations with grade, aggression, withdrawal and parental marital conflict and peer victimization. Second, the most important variable predicting child's relationship with teacher, his/her academic adjustment and satisfaction in schoolwas perceived teacher attitude. And the most important variable predicting children's peer relationships in school was perceived social competence.
This study investigated the relation of androgynous parent's child-rearing practices to children's self-perceived competence by comparison of the effectiveness of androgynous people as parents compared with parents who are other-typed in their sex-role identity. The subjects were 362 third and sixth grade children and their parents selected from two elementary schools in Seoul. The instruments were a children's self-perceived competence scale, a perception of maternal warmth and control scale, a perception of paternal warmth and control scale, parent's self-esteem scale, and parent's sex-role identity scale. Frequencies, percentiles, mean, ${\chi}^2$ test, two way-ANOVA, one way-ANOVA, Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ and $Scheff{\acute{e}}$-test were used for data-analysis. The major findings showed that (1) Androgynous and masculine fathers had higher self-esteem than feminine or undifferentiated fathers. Androgynous, masculine, and feminine mothers had higher self-esteem than undifferentiated mothers. (2) There was no difference in children's perception of parental warmth and control as related to parent's sex-role identity. Androgynyous parents were not more likely to be authoritative parents. (3) Sons of androgynous parents had higher self-perceived competence than those of sex-typed parents, while daughters of sex-typed parents had higher self-perceived competence than those of androgynous parents.
Factor analysis of data collected from 336 elementary school children provided difficuitness and susceptibility as the temperament factors, and affect and control as the nurturing factors. Results showed that non-susceptible children with low controlling mother perceived their cognitive competence positively while highly susceptible children showed no differences in their self-competence by mothers' controlling behavior. Perceived cognitive competence of susceptible boys and of susceptible 3rd graders were low when their mothers asserted low control. Thus, mothers' controlling behavior supported perceived cognitive competence in highly susceptible boys and 3rd graders. That is, the effect of mother's behavior on child's self-competence was moderated by child's characteristics. These results partially supported the Conditional Model.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships among the beliefs of parents and children, children's cognitive and emotional behavior based on cognitive and interreactionary approach models. The Subjects were 138 children (68 eight-year-olds and 70 eleven-year-olds) and their parents. Instruments used in this study were the modified Family Belief Interview Schedule(Alessandri & Wozniak, 1987), the Standard Achievement Test, and Harter's Perceived Competence Scale. Data analysis was by Pearson's r product moment correlation, two-way ANOVA, Fisher-Z test and Student-Newman-Keuls post-hoc test. The major findings are as follows: (1) The beliefs of parents and children has a significant influence children's perception of competence. (2) The congruence of parents' and children's beliefs was hightest in "assumed similarity". (3) Mother's positive view of their children and congruence of mother's and father's beliefs were correlated with children's academic achievement. Parents' positive beliefs and congruence of beliefs were also correlated with children's self-perception of competence.
This study investigated the relationship between preschool children's social competence and perceived social support. The subjects were 85 children enrolled in 10 kindergartens and nurseries located in Seoul. Social support was assessed by children themselves with a social support dialogue Cask, "My Family and Friends," developed by Reid, Lamdegman, and Jaccard (1989). This task consists of 12 dialogues based on Vygotskian principles. Social competency was assessed by teachers with a slightly modified version of Song's Iowa Social Competency Scale (ISCS). The data were analyzed by frequencies percentiles, mean, one-way ANOVAs, and Pearson's correlations. Results showed that (1) Children perceived parents to be the best multi-purpose social providers: mothers for emotional support and fathers for instrumental support. (2) Children with unemployed mothers perceived higher maternal emotional, informational, and instrumental support than children with employed mothers. (3) Middle-class children perceived higher friendship support than upper-or lower-class children. (4) Friendship support was the one variable most significantly related to children's social competence.
The purpose of this study were to develop 「The Inventory of Children's Social Support」 to investigate the sex difference of the perceived social support and social support satisfaction level and to identify the relation between children's social support system and children's social competence. The subjects were 213 5th, 6th children and their 6 teachers of elementary school at Kwang Ju. The data were analyized by frequency percentile factor analysis t-test and canonical correlation analysis, The results were as follows ; 1) The reliability and validity of 「The Inventory of Children's Social Support」was confirmed. 2) Sex difference of perceived social support and social support satisfaction level were partially found 3) There were significant relations between social support system and social competence of children. In conclusion children's social support system can be recognized as significant variable in predicting the social competence of children.
The purpose of this study is to see difference based on age, sex, sociometric ststus for perceived competence of children and difference about perception of responsibilities degree of parents of these children. the content of study as follows. 1. How is the difference about perceived competence of children based on age, sex, sociometric status. 2. How is the difference about perception of responsibilities of children based on age, sex, sociometric status. 3. How is the relationship between father and mother. The subject of this study is children and their parents of 126 persons of the third grade, sixth grade of S elementary school, the second grade of S middle school, the second grade of S girls' middle school which are located in Pusan city. This study used a peer nomination among sociometric assesment method as sociolity assessment means, self-perception profile for children of Harter(1985) as perceived competence assessment means of children and used self-perception profile for children which amends fits for parents. the collected data are managed by SPSS/PC+ program. We analyze three-way ANOVA to verify study question No, one, two, analyze t-verification and Pearson's product moment correlations to verify study question No. three. The result of this study as follows. First, in investigating difference about perceived compretence of children based on age, sex, sociometric status, we can see that children perceive high, self-ability for low ages. Also, boys than girls, popular children than rejected children, neglected children perceive high self-ability. Second, in investigating difference about perception of responsibilities of children based on age, sex, sociometric status, we can see that mother perceive responsibilities in learning sphere, exercise sphere, the whole self-value sphere and father perceive responsibility only in social sphere. Third, in investigating relation between perception of responsibilities of father and mother, this shows that difference between perception of responsibilities of father and mother is not showed ane have (+) interrelation of r=.46(P<.001) between perception of responsibilities of father and perception of responsibilities of mother.
