Correlationship between Climatic Elements and Internal Characteristics of Red Pepper Fruit in Different Growing Periods (홍고추 생육시기별 기상여건과 내적품질과의 상관관계)

  • Red peppers(Capsicum annuum L.), 'Geumtap' and 'Bugang', were cultivated at main producing areas in Korea, and harvested 4 times in 1998 and 1999. The relationships between internal qualities such as reducing sugar, capsaicinoids, and vitamin C contents, and regional climatic elements such as total accumulated air temperature, total amount of precipitation and sunshine duration during the fruit growing periods were compared. The amount of reducing sugar increased as the harvest time was late. Capsaicinoids content varied by harvest dates and cultivated years. Vitamin C content was influenced by cultivated year more than cultivars. Reducing sugar content showed a negative relationship with total amount of precipitation but showed a positive relationship with sunshine duration. There were negative relationship between the contents of capsaicinoids and vitamin C and total amount of precipitation.

  • Sixteen introductions of pepper (Capsicum annuum) were tested for drought resistance. Watering was stopped to the plants grown in perlite in pots to induce drought. After certain period of time, WSD value and stomatal density of mature leaves were measured for evaluation of drought resistance. A correlationship between WSD value and stomatal density was determined. On the basis of WSD value, the most drought-resistant varieties were No.3446, C. chacoence, Gogoshari, and Yatsufusa in a descending order and a significant positive correlation, r=0.581, between WSD value and stomatal density was observed.

  • An antagonistic bacterial strain KLF01 was isolated from rhizosphere of tomato and identified to be Lactobacillus sp. by biochemical and genetic analysis. This strain showed antagonism against the used plant pathogenic bacteria like Ralstonia solanacearum, (bacterial wilt), Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri, (Citrus canker), Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria (Bacterial spot), Eriwinia pyrifoliae (Shoot-blight) and Eriwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora group (Potato scab) through agar well diffusion method. In planta test done by drench application of strain KLF01 $(4{\times}10^8 cfu/ml)$ into the experimental plot containing tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) cultivar 'Lokkusanmaru' and red pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) cultivar 'Buja' plants, in pot test post-inoculated with the plant pathogenic bacteria, R. solanacearum significantly reduced the disease severity, compared to the non-treated plants.

Effect of Natural Plant Components on the Nitrite-scavenging (천연식물성분이 아질산염 소거에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this presents is to investigate, using natural food extracts(Green tea; Camellia sinesis, Du'chung; Eucommia ulmoides Oliver, Eu sung cho; Houttuynia cordate Thunb, Sam back cho; Saurus Chinensis, Baek hwa sa seal oho; Oldenladia diffusa Roxb., Laver; Porphyra tenera, Sea mustard; Undaria pinnatifda and Sea staghorn; Condium fragile) and juices(Sweet pepper; Capsicum annuum var. angulosum, Kale; Brassia oleracea var. acephala, Cucumber; Cucumis sativus, Onion; Allium cepa, Tomato; Lycopericon esculentum, Maesil; Prunus mume, Plum; Prunus salicina and Grape; Vitis spp.), the effect of natural plant components on the nitrite-scavenging under the different levels of pH. From the above mentioned extracts and juices, the content of vitamin C was detected, containing 65.1∼77.1 mg/100g, at the highest level in the Green tea, and followed by vegetables and fruits in order. The nitrite scavenging effect of teas, medicinal plants, and seaweed extracts, in the reaction system under the condition of pH 1.2, were 57.0∼100%, 50.0∼100%, and 18.0∼99.0%, respectively. Influence of Continuous Application with Food Waste Compost on Hot Pepper(Capsicum annuum L.) Yield and Growth (음식물 퇴비의 연용 시용에 따른 고추의 생육과 수량에 미치는 영향)

  • 본 연구는 음식물 퇴비의 합리적인 시용량을 검증하고, 3년 연용에 의한 토양 변화 및 고추 생육과 수량에 미치는 영향을 평가하고 돈분퇴비를 시용한 대조구와 생육 및 품질 면에서 비교 분석하여 적정한 퇴비 시용량을 설정하기 위하여 실시하였다. 처리구는 1, 2, 3차 연도 모두 동일한 방법으로 무처리구, 대조구(2ton/10a의 돈분퇴비), 음식물 퇴비 2t, 4t, 6t, 8ton/10a을 사용한 처리구 등 6개를 두었으며 3반복, 난괴법을 이용하였다. 음식물 퇴비와 돈분 퇴비의 이화학적 특성을 분석한 결과, 음식물 퇴비의 경우 1차 연도는 유기물과 NaCl 모두 부산물 비료의 공정규격에 적합하였으나, 2차 연도는 유기물이, 3차 연도는 NaCl이 공정규격에 적합하지 않았다. 그리고 돈분 퇴비의 경우 수분함량이 약간의 차이를 보였으나 공정규격을 벗어나지는 않았다. 토양은 음식물 퇴비 시용량이 증가할수록 대부분의 화학적 특성이 증가하였고, 연용에 의해서도 유기물, 치환성양이온, NaCl 등의 양이 증가함을 보여 염류집적이 일어나고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 또, 음식물 퇴비 시용량증가에 따라 비중은 낮아지고 공극률이 증가하여 물리성 개선에 도움을 주었으나, 1, 2, 3차 연도를 비교해 보았을 때 큰 차이는 없었다. 고추의 생육과 수량에 있어서도 음식물 퇴비 시용량이 증가할수록 초기 생육이 저조하였으며, 그로 인해 수량이 감소하였다. 또한 3년 연용으로 인한 음식물 퇴비의 축적으로 수량의 감소와 품질 저하를 초래하였다. 음식물 퇴비의 연용에서 2ton/10a 이상의 시용은 수량의 감소를 초래하였다. 이러한 결과로 볼 때 음식물 퇴비를 2ton/10a 이하로 사용하면 큰 무리는 없겠지만 장기 연용은 삼가는 것이 좋을 것이라 판단된다. 따라서 음식물 퇴비를 다른 일반 퇴비 제조의 중간 원료나, 또는 혼합 사용하는 시험을 계속 진행 중에 있다.

Development of a High-Resolution Multi-Locus Microsatellite Typing Method for Colletotrichum gloeosporioides

  • Colletotrichum gloeosporioides is an economically important fungal pathogen causing substantial yield losses indifferent host plants. To understand the genetic diversity and molecular epidemiology of this fungus, we have developed a novel, high-resolution multi-locus microsatellite typing (MLMT) method. Bioinformatic analysis of C. gloeosporioides unannotated genome sequence yielded eight potential microsatellite loci, of which five, CG1 $(GT)_n$, CG2 $(GT1)_n$, CG3 $(TC)_n$, CG4 $(CT)_n$, and CG5 $(CT1)_n$ were selected for further study based on their universal amplification potential, reproducibility, and repeat number polymorphism. The selected microsatellites were used to analyze 31 strains of C. gloeosporioides isolated from 20 different host plants from India. All microsatellite loci were found to be polymorphic, and the approximate fragment sizes of microsatellite loci CG1, CG2, CG3, CG4, and CG5 were in ranges of 213-241, 197-227, 231-265, 209-275, and 132-188, respectively. Among the 31 isolates, 55 different genotypes were identified. The Simpson's index of diversity (D) values for the individual locus ranged from 0.79 to 0.92, with the D value of all combined five microsatellite loci being 0.99. Microsatellite data analysis revealed that isolates from Ocimum sanctum, Capsicum annuum (chili pepper), and Mangifera indica (mango) formed distinct clusters, therefore exhibited some level of correlation between certain genotypes and host. The developed MLMT method would be a powerful tool for studying the genetic diversity and any possible genotype-host correlation in C. gloeosporioides.

Evaluation and Seed Increase of Sources of Resistance to Phytophthora capsici in Pepper (고추 역병 저항성 재료의 특성평가와 종자 증식)

  • Resistance to Phytophthora Capsici and horticultural characteristics of selections from the resistance sources such as PI123469, PI201234, PI201232, AC2258 (=Line 29), CM334, KC268, KC358, KC820, KC821, KC822, KC823 (Line 29), KC462, KC463, KC464 were evaluated and recorded in the process of seed increase. Selections of PI123469, PI201234, PI201232, AC2258, KC823 (Line 29 = AC2258) of them showed the highest level of resistance. A considerable difference in the level of resistance was observed between lines selected from the same sources. The variation between selections derived from the same source was thought to be attributable to natural cross-pollination that may have occurred during the seed increase. Therefore, securing self-pollinated seed by wrapping the flower buds before anthesis would be necessary to obtain genetically pore resistant lines. The next alternative would be to increase the seed in small net houses for single line or field cage.

  • 포도주 부산물이 퇴비와 혼합처리 시용에 따른 고추생육에 미치는 영향을 구명하기 위해 평창군 비가림재배 시설하우스 농가에서 수행하였다. 초기 생육기인 정식 후 15에는 고추의 초장은 유의차가 인정되지 않았으나 정식 후 기간이 경과함에 따라 높은 증가추세를 나타내었으며, 경경의 경우 정식 후 45일, 75일에는 유의차(p>0.05)가 인정되었다. 대조구(돈분발효퇴비 2,000kg/10a)가 0.53cm에서 1.67cm로 1.14cm 증가하였는데, 처리구 T4(포도주부산물 400kg+돈분발효퇴비 1,000kg/10a)는 0.5cm에서 1.74cm로 1.24cm 증가하여 대조구에 비하여 8.7% 높은 증가율을 보였다. 각 처리구의 엽록소 함량은 45일에 증가하다가 75일에 다시 감소하는 현상을 나타내었으며, 처리 15일에서 T1(포도주부산물 200kg+돈분발효퇴비 2,000kg/10a)과 대조구 사이에 유의차가 인정되었으며, T1(포도주부산물 200kg+돈분발효퇴비 2,000kg/10a)이 대조구(돈분발효퇴비 2,000kg/10a)보다 2.6이 높은 56.1로서 가장 높았으며, T4(포도주부산물 400kg+돈분발효퇴비 1,000kg/10a)에서는 53.4로 대조구와 같은 수준을 나타내었다. 엽면적은 정식 후 45일에서 T4(포도주부산물 400kg+돈분발효퇴비 1,000kg/10a)가 60.0$\textrm{cm}^2$로 가장 높게 나타났다. 홍고추의 주당 수량은 돈분발효퇴비와 포도주부산물을 같이 시비한 처리구가 대조구(돈분발효퇴비 2,000kg/10a)에 비하여 감소현상을 보였는데 이러한 현상은 생육후반기에 암모니아 가스에 의해 작물의 피해가 발생하여 수량이 감소된 것으로 사료된다.

First Report of Fusarium oxysporum Causing Damping-off on Paprika in Korea (Fusarium oxysporum에 의한 파프리카 잘록병)

  • In February 2019, a damping-off disease occurred at the seedling stage of paprika in a commercial nursery located in Cheorwon, Korea. A species of Fusarium was isolated from the diseased plant and it was identified as Fusarium oxysporum based on morphological characteristics and nucleotide sequence data of translation elongation factor $1-{\alpha}$ and the largest subunit of RNA polymerase. The isolate obtained was revealed to be pathogenic to the host plant through pathogenicity tests, and the reisolation of the pathogen confirmed Koch's postulates. This is the first report of damping-off caused by Fusarium oxysporum on paprika in Korea.

Effects of Food Waste Mixed Organic Fertilizer Treatment on Growth and Yield of Capsicum annuum

  • The global population is increasing every year, and the amount of food waste is also increasing. Direct landfilling of food waste has been prohibited since 2005, and in accordance with the London Convention in 2013, the discharge of livestock manure, sewage sludge, and food waste into the sea is prohibited. In the case of incineration to treat the discharged food waste, the heat point is lowered due to the moisture in the food waste itself, so fuel must be added. Therefore, this study was conducted to get basic data for setting the limit of application by investigating the growth and yield of crops after treating food waste dry powder mixed fertilizer (MF) on red pepper. In the experiment, continuous cultivation was carried out for two years in 2021 (1st year) and 2022 (2nd year). The treatment groups were set as Not Treatment (NT), Chemical Fertilizer (CF), Mixed Fertilizer (MF), Mixed Fertilizer×2 (MF×2). After harvest, crop growth and yield were investigated. As a result of the 1st years of growth survey, CF, MF, MF×2 show significant difference in shoot length compared to NT. About fresh weight and dry weight, CF show significant difference compared to NT. The 2nd years of growth survey, the shoot and root length, fresh weight did not show significant difference with NT. In case of dry weight, MF is significant increased compared to NT. As a result of the yield survey of the 1st year, all treatment groups did not show a significance in yield compared to the NT. In case of 2nd year, all treatment groups show significantly increased value compared to NT. The yield of MF was highest among the treatment groups. In the future, it is thought that it is necessary to quantitatively evaluate the effect of food waste dry powder mixed fertilizer through additional experiments and continuous cultivation, and to establish an appropriate amount of use and establishment of a manual based on this.
